@GetOutArizona

The difference can be found in geometry and maximum tire size. The Checkpoint is more relaxed and has the capability of a larger tire size. If you are going to be doing more bike packing and gravel riding, then the checkpoint is the bike for you my friend. The Domane is more of an “all road.” That being said, I will be purchasing a Domane SL6. 😉

The Domane is used as a gravel bike by many riders. However, I personally would choose the Checkpoint if gravel were my dominant. I plan on using the Domane as my primary road/canal bike. Though the canals here are mixed surface, they are no where close to what I would consider gravel.

I've had the Domane SL5 from 2021 and I don't recommend road tires for gravel. You really need gravel specific tires of 42mm+ if you ride loose tarmac, the pea gravel is scary on turns! That being said the Domane is absolutely fun as an endurance mixed road surface bike1

Great question and thank you for asking. The feedback that I have received from most riders is the tire selection has made the biggest impact on the handling and feel of the bike. I know of two rides that have also opted for different wheelsets as well. I feel that sometimes people forget she is built for endurance and not feather-weight racing. Because of this fact, some have unreasonable expectations. @@GetOutArizona Thanks for the feedback. I definitely need the sturdiness of the endurance bike for the uneven pavement and mountain roads of New Mexico and something easier on my joints compared to my older racing bike. But I am going to have to change to 28 wheels. I am just so sick of being a sloth up hills. Should be more sturdy but slower than the Emonda which was my original goal. Trek saying you can race on the Domane as is may have been a little over-sold but they are probably just thinking flat roads.

Hello Jesus, thank you for taking the time to watch and ask your question. In my opinion, the 2022 Domane is more than adequate for gravel. The 2021 has 700x35mm multisurface tires (So Okay for some gravel) and Bosch motor. Both very comfortable and stable riding hoods. More upright riding position. Road tested them without using motor since I only intend to use motor on 1 or 2 very steep hills, but probably also when 15 knot plus headwinds which is normal. Big difference when wind is at back pushing me - so this may be similar to the low setting on ebike motor assist.

I’d buy this if I could only sell my checkpoint

@@GetOutArizona first ride today, here are my thoughts. This bike encourages you to go fast and rewards you when you do. It’s not nimble like the checkpoint. It has this built in intelligence that will correct itself straight when you swerve which is impressive. Super soft comfortable ride which could be the tubeless tires, I’m not sure, this is a first for me. Today was just 52 km but I’m looking forward for some long rides on this bike. So happy I made this purchase. Still have the checkpoint for sale FYI

Over 20lb without pedals... The 105 Steel bike I bought 35 years is only 1/2 lb heavier. That is just stupid.

A bike is still a bike, bud. You are welcome to spend 12k on the lightest bike you can find. They exist. The Domane does most things extremely well which is the reason it's so popular. If your legs can't handle a lb or two more, then just move on.

If you want to step back down to 21mm tires, rim brakes, an external saddle bag, all your brake/gear lines hanging in the breeze, well hey...go ahead. Sure, it's a little heavy in 2022, but it's not really a heads-up comparison. I'd still rather ride with the isospeed than a steel frame also, even if the steel frame soaks up a lot of the same harshness that iso is there for.

The downtube is so huge. Crux is aesthetically more pleasing.
