This is why I watch SD videos. He doesn't hit you over the head with theory (in this case triad shapes). Unlike most triad videos the instructor jams multiple (up to 12!) shapes down your throat to memorize. I wish everyone could see my wall of triad shapes I've written/printed out. I'm constantly looking for a triad pattern to memorize without much luck. As shown in this video, why do you need to know triads on all 6 strings? Anything on the E & A strings you'll probably barre anyway. If you have a chord chart and maybe a circle of fifths diagram this lesson will "click" instantaneously. Here SD shows how to use 2 shapes, the easiest part of a (minor) pentatonic scale, and it makes you sound like you've been playing for eons. This is the stuff you want to play/noodle with if somebody handed you a guitar and said, "Play something Yngwie". Unless you think playing a bunch of triads shapes would impress anybody, start slow and then move on. Thanks again SD.

Great lesson! Usually my chords are barred when moving past the third fret so lessons like these are great reminders that those open looking closed shapes we know can still be utilized farther down the fretboard 👍

I always love these beginner(well back to basics for me) videos. A lot of times after years of playing & trying to make everything sound so "original" you forget the whole reason you started. Just to play & enjoy what we are doing... These video kinda bring everything back into perspective. Hope all is well, take it easy.

OK finally Sean Daniel ties the G A and D triads by sliding G into A THEN playing a random lick on the D pentatonic--7-9 etc Wonderful lesson --this was a brilliant triad idea on combining triads with pentatonic soloing ---thankyou Sean !--I finally learnt something very valuable --will attempt to apply this method --to other triads and pentatonic !

Great practice lick for sure. I learned a cool theory triad from a Pat Martino tutorial. Start with the augmented triad. Flat the sharp 5 and you have the Major, raise the sharp 5 and you have the relative minor. Since each note in the augmented triad can be the #5, you have 9 triads altogether just by raising or lowering the #5! Raise the shape 1 fret and repeat, etc., for all keys! Thanks for posting 😎

On the same string set, DGB, there is another good triad I like to combine with the two you show. It is built from the 1st position C chord shape in closed voicing using only those 3 strings. The three of them can be combined in various ways to open up a lot of the neck.

Good stuff, Sean. I, too have ignored triads and music theory for a very long time. Thinking of theory as "jazz oriented" and not relevant to my playing. Appreciate the review and humor. hey man, the guitar sounds a little squeakier in this one. just out of curiosity, does it take you a while to adjust to each guitar? i know you’re always picking up new guitars, never thought about how someone at your skill level adjusts to new guitars, any thoughts around that?

Feel around for the right positions of those two chord shapes, and you'll be playing a reasonable version of The Cut Out Witch pretty soon. (Try L-adder, A-shape, looping: L5 A10 A7 A4 L3 L5). Not you, Sean. You can probably even play the riff in the song already. :D For a recent example of what the song can sound like, here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sM98hJqX3JmUk6c.html Just a reasonably snazzy example of how one can go quite far with those chord shapes. The song itself is quite happy to become whatever else you make of it. I think even the band plays it a few different ways.

Hi Michael - Just search for relative minors of major keys and hopefully it will make some sense - similar to A minor is the relative minor of C major
