The Trial Of The Lowestoft Witches

A Little Bit Of History

A Little Bit Of History

Күн бұрын

The accusations of Witchcraft that stuck Lowestoft in the early 1660s would not only lead to the deaths of 2 innocent women but lay the ground work for a much bloodier event decades later.
Note: There seemed to be some debate on if this took place in 1662 or 1664 I have chosen 1662 as it is the dates mentioned in the trial reports.

Great video ! It amazes me that we are still after all these years doing the same stuff , now we use social media, you are accused and judge by people that you don't know or they have something to win. Just found your channel this afternoon , and joined. Love all the sea stories and the Halloween specials ! Hope you have a great/safe week, Cheers, Tony

Overall, about 500 hundred victims were executed in England. Numbers vary for Scotland. It's approximated that a quarter of the total deaths were men. Hanging or drowning was common in England (not burning). Burning belonged in Scotland, but the victims were STRANGLED first! I mean, who did they employ for this kind of thing????

One of my ancestors was Lady Jane Gray burned as a witch in Edinburgh Castle. Another of my ancestors gave evidence in the Salem witch trials for the most talented Midwife in Salem, Rebecca Nurse age 71. She had delivered two of my ancestors babies and my ancestor gave testimony that she was no witch and that the girls were lying. In doing this she risked being accused of also being a witch. They hung Rebecca anyway. A portion of why Rebecca was hung was a belief not so much in witches… but that the Bible decreed women pay for Original Sin by the agonies of childbirth and often dying in childbirth. Rebecca was highly skilled with herbs that eased pain and was literate and more intelligent than many men. As far as they could see she had no business easing that pain, nor in knowing so much about things they did not. I am guessing at 71 she was also done bowing and scraping to men and spoke her mind. That in and of itself was intolerable

@@alittlebitofhistory I am an unusual case as I have 10 people off the Mayflower and most of the rest came with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630, all but 2 came by 1660 predominantly from Norwich, Essex, Sussex, Hertfordshire & London. It is clear neighbors married neighbors either before getting on a boat on upon arrival to the new world. All sorts came from farmers to Sir’s & Lady’s… lots of second and third sons who were not going to get the family property. I’d love to hear of any ships carrying people from that part of your country.

At the time in the US, pre constitution, (shudder), if someone accused you of a crime, they could just make it up, it was up to you to prove yourself innocent, also judges were not from the community, they traveled around and did not have anyone really to answer to and also, if the person was found guilty the judge got their property. I just love our constitution so much! I know it’s flawed, but I just love it to pieces!
