The Trier Amphitheater
Under the arena there was a kind of basement, which is still preserved. There were elevators so the actors could perform. Therefore, it was not possible to fill the arena with water. The amphitheater was part of the Roman city wall and is located under Petrisberg. One of the reasons why the amphitheater was built on Petrisberg was that due to the slopes of Petrisberg, only half of it needed to be covered with earth for the spectator stands. It faces north and has north and south exits. Animals or performers could be quickly transported to the venue using a hidden elevator in the center of the arena.
