Sand is the most exploited natural resource on earth, after water. In Cambodia, the government is using sand to fill in lakes around its capital, Phnom Penh, to create prime real estate for villas and shopping malls. Now, one community is fighting to save their homes on the city's largest natural lake.

Ashamed that we, Cambodians can't make a change and I'm glad that Insider is making a video about this because speaking out against what's happening is dangerous here.

I had no idea that people couldn't even own land until 2001!! I'm only 3min into the video and very glad I clicked on it, it's been on my recommended list for 3 weeks and I kept scrolling past it as I've never travelled further east than Montenegro. What happened in this country that went from living in a tradition way to destroying lakes locals rely on so much, to build luxury property? Who's buying the property, locals or immigrants from the west? Is the tourism growing this much?
@RikHendriksDutchCo
@RikHendriksDutchCo Жыл бұрын
@@anabellepreis1920 that's hard to tell who's buying it. Foreigners can only buy property first floor and up. Or you need a company with a Khmer national and cannot own more than 49%. If I look at sihanoukville once a small seaside town, I can't believe my eyes. Same thing happened there. Now countless skeletons of unfinished large buildings are just standing there. The investors fled. In Phnom Penh a lot of condos are sitting empty. I can't wrap my head around it😕

Thank Insider for this documentary. As a Cambodian citizen, we can see clearly about what's happening. But the problem is, the freedom of expression in Cambodia has limited. Speaking out about the truth is a risk thing to do against the government. I hope to see more videos of The True Cost about Cambodia to be known more.

Even here in the Netherlands (which should be developed by 'their' terms) we as a people are driven out of our lands and homes because of businesses plans, not to mention our farmers. Even though we are a different kind of people, we are the same, we need to fight our governments or we will face the same fate We will own nothing and 'be happy', but we won't be happy, we need to fight for our right.

That's because people kept allowing government interfere in every aspect of society! The speech has been altered to appease certain groups, even a definition of a woman has been changed officially vocabularies! Some pawn in a form of an awkward child pressed on feelings and people then convinced their governments to tax them into poverty to stop the sun from being hot! The ones that keep pushing the boundaries will keep doing so, unless a small percentage of people that see through all the lies do something. The most awful thing is, the majority of sheep that either see how messed up this is and do nothing because they're too lazy, too dependent on the system, or don't understand anything and believe the lies to the point where they start abusing anyone that doesn't agree with the narrative they're used to. Finally, I think it's time for each person to accept a simple fact - everything that's good and bad that happened is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and only you can make it worse or better. Stop relying others, especially government that never has or will care about you, and start surrounding yourself with people with same values and goals, form a community and grow. I don't see any other way.

How many ashamed and apologetic governments have you witnessed?? They should be ashamed but never have and never will, so what's next? Holing someone will knock on your door and solve your problems or come up with a plan? The nature of people is such that no changes will be made unless their current situation is unbearable, and even then some are too lazy, have too many excuses, and end up accepting lower standards of already bad situation. That's why shwab said you will own nothing and be happy, he is counting on the majority to gradually accept living worse and worse.

People in this country suffer a lot constantly, the standard of living is very low. The biggest problem is clean water. More than 2 million people in Cambodia lack access to safe water, and over 3 million lack access to improved sanitation. Besides, pickpocketing, smuggling and small gangs are widespread in all areas. This is especially because travelers and other investment management are not interested in Cambodia.

The elites in Cambodia holds many powers over the people. They can make things the way they want, and I can assume that the land that was mapped on the map that goes to the elites are just part of the city’s development. It’s a threat to the environment, but there’s nothing we can do. As a Cambodian who lives in Phnom Penh my self, seeing this is just horrific to watch. I always go to that lake, everytime I go there the land just keeps increasing in size. Government seizing property from people’s are just sad to watch. It’s a growing issue in Cambodia. We don’t have the rights to speak out, because if we do we’d me imprisoned. You need to hide the truth to survive out here…

Here is the problem of incompetent officials, instead of shifting the problems of settlers to business, officials have pinned these problems on the state. Do you want land? No problem - here is a list of people, they need a new place of residence, build them a house in a new place or give them a good plot. It is necessary to negotiate with these people independently. As soon as we make sure that you have solved the problems with the settlers, the lands are yours.

Hello insider Business, thank you for the video. This is tragedies story. It just reminds me again of forcing Cambodians to relocate to somewhere in 1983. I thought they have a better life. People must have basic physiological essentials for survival such as place, basic medicine, food, water, oxygen, and nerve impulse. This is such a different world. I have seen the News, mostly all business and developer is a part of the 14K Triad, one of the largest Chinese organized crime in the world. US sanctions on transnational underworld activities to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. He runs highly profitable business empire across Hong Kong, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar etc.

@Lay Sophanna Are you in Cambodia or not? Why don't you know that Japan also involves the projects with the government to help Cambodia to prevent the flood when it's heavy raining? The project also finished last year. The lake prevents flood, Are u kidding me? When the lake is fully in water and the rain keeps falling down, then it's still flooding everywhere. Do some homework to know the truth. Don't be ignorant by the fake news.

I've been aware of the "sand timer" problem for a few years now, but I've never witnessed in such unleashed exploitative and vicious vision of capitalism. I try my best to believe that humanity is not strictly bound to good or evil, but when I when I see such unbridled robbery of the very sand and water which people have built their lives on for hundreds of years it really makes me scratch my head at the deeply problematic and saddening potentials of the greed of humanity. Can we please just start mining asteroids, watching this happen everywhere is too much for my tiny little mind to cope with or comprehend.
