I live in UK and most places don't seem liminal no matter where you would be. I went on vacation to america and everything felt so surreal and odd. It triggered alot of liminal space feelings because of how larger and spacous everything is.

Interesting… I would think it may have to do with the US still being a relatively young country, so much of the architecture isn’t very old compared to many European buildings which were made to last for ages that are often beautiful and have a classic feel nice matter their age. Our stuff deteriorates or we take on styles that go out of fashion very quickly and become outdated, making them feel wrong and eerie out of context. Honestly a lot of these remind me of old creepy country churches, day cares, my mom’s workplace, doctors offices, storage buildings etc. So many of these liminal images bring me back to weird memories of my childhood and my uncomfortable dreams of the past which adds a strange element to it.

For me, this is the best explanation/analysis on liminal spaces out there, because it manages to break down and explain both the physical and mental/emotional elements that make up all parts of the aesthetic as a whole very clearly, and also succeeds in explaining that the liminal spaces aesthetic is one of those things that just hits a bit differently for everyone.

The creepiest, yet most calming ones are the ones that look like a pool ,but with stairs or doorways to go through. Also, liminal spaces can make us both uncomfortable and super comfortable. For someone who is more introverted, I feel like the fact that nobody is there comforts them. And for extroverts, I feel like because nobody's there they feel uneasy, as if something could get them, because they are not in a group. They don't have someone who could protect them. It could be both. I don't even know what the ambiverts are thinking when they watch this.

I remember as a kid when I’d used to walk to my friend’s house in the early morning hours before school, before the sun had come up and it was still really dark outside. I lived in a smaller town and no one was outside at that time (usually), so it was always so quiet. And most of the houses and small streets I’d walk by were dark with only a small orangey colored street light on the corner. I used to get the most surreal feelings at those times. Now when I watch your video, I realize I walked and lived in a liminal space. It always felt different at night compared to the day, sometimes creepy, but always so peaceful. I still have dreams to this day of that small town and my old house…

3:16 dude I’ve never seen that picture before but that’s probably the one that feels most familiar to me. I’ve been to a hotel before that had a couch of that same shape and similar color, extremely similar wall and carpets and it even had that window with the blinds, and the kitchen behind that half wall (which was also in that hotel room) had similar cabinets and countertops. The table in the center, there was something like that, the TV, there was a similar, old fashioned TV on a stand that looked extremely similar. I know I haven’t been there but holy crap that gives me the chills.

It adds so much on how the image feels, like the kind of nostalgic dreamlike sounds that plays with some images making it feel uneasy yet comforting, like you can spend some time by youself enjoying the lack of other life or the emptiness of a never ending hallway with only the buzzing of fluorescent lights to comfort you (seriously the addition of the fluorescent light buzz was so cool!) great video :D

The liminal pools are my favorite kind, because it has that abandoned/unused aesthetic like maybe some type of incident happened or maybe it was just left there to write and it got flooded for all of those years, giving you wonder about how it got flooded in the first place and how the water can be green, brown, or light blue deep or shallow it has endless of style you can use it for and it would still be the same type of liminal space

I appreciate the fact that you address just how hard it is to define liminal spaces/images. To me, they feel one of two ways. One you touched on, which is stuck. Stuck between what was and what will be, stuck in a perpetual present. You pass through that present when you pass through the space, but sticking around makes you feel stuck yourself. An deeply unsettling feeling, but one that passes once you leave. The other feeling is one I called shared memory. It can be summed up with the phrase "this memory belongs to everyone." Some liminal spaces (and most of my favorites) can elicit memories that most people can relate to. A secional couch in a downstairs living room, pointed towards a tube tv playing spongebob. A school library after dark. A now empty blockbuster building. These spaces drip with surreal familiarity that so many people can recall, even if they've never been there before, especially if that space represents a transitional period of time. That sense of "I know this place, but Ive never been here" elicits such a unique feeling of longing, but sometimes a paradoxical dread that makes you want to get away or stop looking, but at the same time makes you stay put. One of my all time favorite liminal images hits this sharee memory and longing dread incredibly hard. Its a meadow surrounded by tree covered hills on a dark, overcast day. The image quality is low, af if taken on an early 2000s picture phone. Every time I look at it, I feel an intense desire to go there, but a simultanious inexplicable dread

10:41 this photo and this photo 10:45 are extremely nostalgic to me! The first one reminds me of my preschool days and visits to this church my aunt went. I’d frequently play with the kids there. The second one is whimsically nostalgic. A hazy memory. Reminds me of the days before any of my preschool days. The days where I’d lounge around with my Pappie on a hot summer day with a fan, eating sausage and bacon, playing Leapfrog games on a box TV in my room. The days where my Pap would drive me up to my dad’s to stay in which my dad would play Kiss songs nonstop; especially “Shandi” because he named me after it :D and the days when I’d be in our living room watching TV before bed.. probably some time in the late 2000s. My god.. I miss it so much. It also reminds of when I’d be taken to my other Grandpa’s house (he was my grandma’s ex) with my Pap and Gram to sit as they fixed things over there. I’d just chill in the living room and it looked just like that image! And y’know what? I bet the house in that image smells just like cigar smoke just as that house did.

7:20 This one reminds me of a story I heard of a girl and her family stuck in a bunker because of toxic waste outside. I'm pretty sure they could go outside because they were high enough so that it couldn't reach them, like on a high hill. Nobody went outside though, and they all needed someone to go outside to get things, and all but the girl were weak, but the girl, fearful, stayed in her spot instaid. One by one, her family members died. She was all alone, and decided to finnaly go outside. She ended up fine and could breathe. She could've saved them. She then died because she jumped off the hill into the waste. Am I the only one who remembers or have heard of this story?

Even before I heard about liminal spaces, I remember sometimes feeling a weird comfort for these kind of transitional places and places taken out of their context. Complex underground structures like basements of large buildings, subway stations, maintenance tunnels etc. in particular have a special adventurous and mysterious feeling to them. I think that is why there are so many games set in maze-like underground tunnels/dungeons. And places like schools at night always had this interesting and eerie feeling to them, I often noticed that before the term liminal space was known, I remember in particular spending the whole night in my universities computer room to work on my projects and having this feeling when walking through the dark and empty hallways at night with no one around. Here are some more things that can have liminal feelings: -Rooms without windows. I noticed that in one of the computer rooms in our university in the middle of the building with no windows as well, it gives a weird feeling of being shut off from the outside world. The same feeling underground places give you, like you are completely separated from day and night. -Outdoor elements inside buildings. When things like large trees, grass, landscapes with plants, ponds, house fronts, walls, roofs etc. that are normally supposed to be outdoors are inside buildings, especially if it is inside smaller cozy rooms meant for living there. -Vehicles taken out of context. This can be a boat on land far away from any water, a plane in the forest, a car inside a small room (rooms where people live) or a bus, truck or train car that has its interior built into a house for living, especially if the original seats are still there but people use it as a living house.

I remember coming across it a couple months ago when trying to find info about that "The end is near" library. It made me feel more nostalgic than any other liminal space photo i've seen before. Even though I know it's a library, for whatever reason it reminded me of a jewelry store I went to many years ago. Loved the video, and especially that part. :)

Yooo, such a good explanation of the topic, and a pretty flawless analysis of the phenomenon. Viewing something in a new context makes a space liminal and the reason so many different types of liminal spaces exist is because of the many ways in which you can switch around the context.

I love liminal spaces, the calm, meditative state they provide while I try to figure myself out, they are quite therapeutic to me, actually, especially when they appear in my dreams. It’s sad that the meaning is being clouded by people who don’t understand it.

To me, liminal spaces bring me comfort, as these images for me kinda become screenshots of my memories. I experience memory loss, so sometimes some memories are blurry to me while others are just a little bit of an idea of a memory, so these images are very comforting in reminding me at least a little bit of what that memory is.

I think sometimes the reason that sudden disappearance of life in public spaces is scary is because your brain tries to put together a reason as to why life has suddenly vanished, but it can't so it starts imagining all sorts of things and it further drives your fear and panic, mainly with the fear of unknown.

I love your take on liminal spaces. It's always a bit frustrating when ppl constantly describe them as transitional.. bc a lot of liminal spaces aren't.. how is an empty Chuck E. Cheese transitional?
@locoluis1978

Liminal literally means "pertaining to a threshold". Not "altered reality". Not "creepy" or "eerie". Just that, transitional. A lot of things are mistakenly described as "liminal" because people just don't get it.

One dream I’ve had recently was that I found myself in a grocery store with my grandmother (and several other people). The grocery store seemed normal at first, until I noticed that a sports store was attached to it, and I checked out the hockey jerseys that were there. Since this store in my dreams broke the rules of reality, it’d be considered a liminal space.

10:45 has to be one of my favorite liminal images of all time! and I often wonder where it’s from. Just that nostalgic, haunting golden-green glaze over everything.. that ancient looking bejeweled twinkling Christmas tree.. and those ghostly hazey lights.. especially the blue light coming from the tv. It looks.. whimsical, nostalgic, melancholic, definitely-from-another-era.. but which era?.. it looks so familiar but not at the same time; a common description for liminal images but dang does this photo take the cake for the best descriptor of that. Reminds me of my Papap’s house.. that looked somewhat like that. It smelled like the cigars he smoked, and I bet that room smells the same way. Maybe with a dash of floral perfume? Maybe also with a slight wood-like outdoors smell. But it wouldn’t be fresh.. it would be cramped, closed in, and musty. The room being it’s own reality following it’s own set of rules outside of our own reality. Like.. this room really fits the description of an thing lost to time and space.. shoved to the side in some kinda place where an alternate reality version of us died eons ago. Just pure nothingness.. in a universe filled with only black holes that dispelled an unimaginable amount of years ago.. and yet.. this just.. exists somewhere in it all Yeah I’m rambling.. y’know what I mean tho, right? lol It looks so dead but alive at the same time, stuck in a memory of some kind.. replaying itself over and over again for eternity.
