Western society has made everything from vampires to wolf-man and everything in between, but do some of these "monsters" have real origins in history?

The origin of the name "Vampire" is a serbian word "Vampir". Creature is from a slavic mithology and represents the creature whose skin is not punctured in anyway during life, and died not being baptized. No bones, only bloated soft body red from the blood inside of it. Can squeeze itself through a small openings. Also, the werewolf is the same creature, just another name. Later, Hollywood decided to separate them and and new exciting features to both. I can wait until Hollywood discovers "Drekavac" (Screamer). A slavic mithology creature. A child died in pain, unbaptized, short, with so long body hair that with every step steps on it and screams in agony. Lives in deep woods and attacks people with it's long claws.

The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first appearance of the English word vampire (as vampyre) in English from 1734, in a travelogue titled Travels of Three English Gentlemen published in The Harleian Miscellany in 1745.Vampires had already been discussed in French and German literature. After Austira gained control of northern Serbia and Oltenia with the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718, officials noted the local practice of exhuming bodies and "killing vampires". These reports, prepared between 1725 and 1732, received widespread publicity. The English term was derived (possibly via French vampyre) from the German Vampir, in turn derived in the early 18th century from the Serbian vampir (Cyrillic: вампир) when Arnold Paole, a purported vampire in Serbia was described during the time when Northern Serbia was part of the Austrian Empire. So not Hungary but Austrian Empire and present Serbia

I like the Irish folklore origin of zombies. At the end of Samhain dead loved ones would come back to life and it was the families responsibility to present a feast for them because their hunger had grown while they were dead. If they didn't provide enough food it could lead to the "zombie" eating their entire family until it's full. I think this is closer to how we describe zombies today more than the Haitian lore.

"Vlad tepes was not a blood sucking monster" he was blood thirsty however you dont get the impaler title for being nice. Hes not the only bloodthirsty monster in history but hes among them. Also in european culture ghouls predate zombies sometimes they're very very similar. Undead people with an appitite for human flesh. Also it nice that you pointed out that 1816 was that bleak that writing horror stores was more fun then living the horror story that was the little iceage. Then again just about anything is better then living in a horrorific wintery apoclaypse come real. (sure it wasnt that bad but if it kept going it would start killing enough crops for even more famine to spread.)
@AkeN996

Another blood-thirsty woman was Bathory of Transylvania (or so) that lived in the same period as Vlad the Impaler. She had a castle (now in ruins) where she brought virgin girls to kill them in order to bath in their blood and drink it, thinking that'd be the key to long life. The weird part is that this actually happened...

Alexandru Nan Ernest Not really men and women are equal over all capeable of the same level of good or evil the only differnce is strenght and psychology. Men are built to use direct methods women will use indiect psychologial methods that can be even more damaging if used right. Her cruelty was how she would've kept power. keep in mind they didnt outright kill her they put her in solitary for years before she died.

I read a story in my American History class about how some soldiers took out the guards in a concentration camp, and let the inmates free, and the inmates were so starved that they turned on the injured/ dead guards and ate them. I always thought that's where the zombie legend stemmed from.

Stoker only got the name "Dracula" from Vlad "The Impaler" Dracul (among other names he was called). He wrote the whole book before hearing of the historical figure send only changed the name before publication because it was way better than the name in the original story (which I can't remember). While some similarities between the legend of the Impaler (many of which were exaggerated or false) and the fictional vampire were noticed by Stoker, they weren't planned in advance or intentional.

Vlad the Impaler aka Dracula was a monster indeed. He massacred nearby Turkic villages and hung over 20,000 bodies (including women and infants) on stakes to provoke the Ottoman Sultan. Long story short, he was later defeated by an Ottoman army led by his own brother, who joined the cause of the Sultan and converted to Islam.
