The True Price of Fish

Too many fishermen are losing their lives at sea. As the UK’s most dangerous profession, commercial fishing has accounted for 87 deaths in the past 10 years. One way to mitigate the dangers faced is to wear a lifejacket at sea. However, just 25% of our 12,000 fishermen make this decision.
In 2014, campaigns have reignited the importance of fishermen wearing lifejackets. This TV documentary explores the traditions, stories and resolutions behind this tricky relationship in the South West of England.

done ocean passages, worked tugs, lifejacket is ok in warm seas, otherwise, it'll just add to your dying time, plus the crew need to know you are overboard, chances being found zilch, even if the MOB button is activated when you go over, boat doing 10 knots heavy seas you are invisible in seconds

Loads of people who don't go out to sea telling those who do what to do. Yes life jackets are smaller than they were but leave it to sailors to choose their own path.

I remember Nigel in falmouth sea fishing course in early 1980s with cliff pender. Sorry we moved your 2cv but you werent forgotten. Me and john roberts often reminisce. Best days

With the cold water all the lifejack does is let you suffer longer

totally currect and fully agree however the ilm only consontrates on fishing bat well what about shell fishermen who do it by hand i.e cockle pickers as they travel miles out on beaches soe of which dangerous without anything bar mobile phones i personally believe if commercial fishermen prove they do do fishing as a living i think we should get some sort of discount towards lifejackets eperbs ect espesally on the under 10m boats as they are the ones most at risk to the sea which is hat i have/do that is my conserns ect

If you are commercial fishing then find out about getting free lifejackets (Personal Flotation Devices - PFDs) www.seafish.org/training/sea-you-home-safe/get-a-free-pfd

As a fisherman in the Southern ocean . Had misfortune of spending a couple hours in the Brine , Asking for a pair a Kids Floaties. to the Big man upstairs . Sad id blow em my self . Sing in the Choir anything IF YOU HAVENT GOT IT ON . Bloody Simple you WONT get . By wishing . Stay safe . Full nets.

eu took all uk's fishing and now they complain that uk will have all it's fishing waters BACK. EUROPE, LEAVE THE EU MONSTER AND UK WILL TALK

How about making it a criteria for any type of marine insurance? Under motor insurance law if you're not wearing your seatbelt then good luck in trying to get a payout. Sadly money talks in this life

It already pretty much is like that, especially aboard the bigger commercial boats, you have an accident, no matter what, good luck if you're not wearing your full ppe.

If you go over the side with boots and foul weather gear you can't swim ....so they need to design a life jacket for fishermen

I think the mandatory life jacket law is a good one. After all, all other industries have to oblige to laws they don't feel should apply to them. Just because fisherman are out at sea, this does not make them outside of the law. The decision should not be down to them, just like when situations arise where they require rescue, they don't pay for the rescue, search boats, coastguard, helicopters, hospital, medical staff, etc, etc. They don't deal with the mess and grief left when they don't ever return, their family and friends do. The decision shouldn't be theirs to make.
