@@rabidfarmer9765 I love how this comment chain perfectly sums up why even knowing the origins of Uncle Tom, people will not be able to reclaim the character just yet. The moment a person shows genuine attempt to reconcile the character, we get a random racist popping up saying, 'heh, those ignorant blacks. don't know anything. Ungrateful neeeeegrrooooes for what Tom did for them' My friend. As you've demonstrate for me, Uncle Tom and how the term has become what it is today is actually a bit more complicated than the black+white idea that people didn't know what the original character was like. It's hard to actually reclaim the original Uncle Tom because we'd also have to address all the ways he's been used to shame black people to either forgive like uncle tom did in order to be a good christian and also potentially play into the hands of racists, or to to shame black people into rejecting a powerful black figure willing to martyr himself in defiance of white slaveowners just because he's been reframed into a weak sycophant. And people can't in good faith try to reclaim him also because of people like you, who gleeful welcome attempts as an opportunity to express bigotry.

Therefore, the only way anyone can be saved is if God grants them the ability and desire to repent. Which also means that the only reason why someone goes to hell is because God willed it for them NOT attain salvation... for the only one who are saved are the ones whom God determines to save before the foundation of the world. Ergo... to them... no one has the free will to accept Christ as their savior.

@Bridgee Bridge So they have to be slaves... But only for seven years . 😳. Do they get pensions and a retirement party? And does this lavish "generosity" apply to all slaves, or is there a... racial... element about it? 🤨 The import thing is that you can kill them with impunity (Exodus 21:20-21) between jubilees. 🤣

Over the last dozen years or so I’ve heard the slur “Uncle Tom” I only knew he was a slave, and certainly had no idea he was a real person, and not a fictional character. Recently while watching TikTok videos (their algorithm is actually exceptionally good, and it picks up in the type of content you prefer, I see mostly Christian, wholesome, conservative topics) a content creator shared that he’s regularly being called an Uncle Tom, so I decided to research h more about it here on KZfaq. Thank you for putting together a cohesive overview of who Josiah was, I will buy the book to gain a further understanding. I find it incredibly sad that people use Josiah Hanson as an insult, it’s even sadder that they have no idea what he did, the people that use Josiah as an insult have no idea how much character it took for him to live up to his word. The only thing we take with us when we die is our integrity. The pressure he experienced while in Kentucky must have been, in a very small way, similar to what Jesus experienced in the garden. To then see the very people that trusted him sold off must have been unimaginable. We don’t know from this story if they were worse or better off, but we do know that, even if they had fled to Ohio, a free state, they were not safe, they would have been fugitives. The fact that he safely got his family to Canada in 40 days is amazing, and to have gone on assist well over 100 slaves achieve freedom is so humbling. God is so amazing, I’m relieved to learn that Josiah knew that Jesus loved him, and he himself spread the Good News!

Here in Australia I read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as a teenager, but I was too young at the time, and didn't remember much of it. Right now I am rereading it and, although it is a bit "preachy", I am amazed at the author's ability to delineate characters. As literature alone it is certainly a great book.

GREAT ROLE MODEL. WE NEED TO BE TOLD ABOUT AS MANY GOOD ROLE MODELS AS POSSIBLE . FOR TOO LONG THE MEDIA HAS GLORIFIED CRIME AND EVEN SHOWED IT AS ENTERTAINMENT .PEOPLE WHO FEEL LIKE NOBODIES COULD BE TEMPTED TO COMMIT CRIMES JUST TO BE NOTICED. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF GOOD DEEDS WERE PUBLICIZED .WHAT ABOUT THE TIMES THAT SOMEONE HAS SAVED A LIFE WHEN THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO?

Barbara Moran and yet, there are many blacks that look down on this man as being a good example in fact when they see another dark skinned individuals showing morals and wanting to succeed and take good care of their family and cooperate with the governmental system that we are all forced to live under they criticize him and call him an Uncle Tom. They reveal their ignorance in saying that. Because if they really knew about the man, they should definitely view him as a great role model.

Instead of fighting to keep statues of traitors like the confederates generals and soldiers and the confederate flag, what about honoring this fine individual as any decent true Christians country should and put up statues and monuments and also put in your history books the story of men like Josiah Henson. that is what godly and honest and true and real democratic citizens would want.

Good day to everyone, We all live now in the 21st century. Why is it then that a great nation like America, still can not accept the fact WE are ALL equal! I thank my lucky stars I live in the United Kingdom, were not only Multiracial living together as one! I am proud my ancestors, William Wilberforce brought about the end! on 25 March 1807, King George III signed into law the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, banning trading in enslaved people of the British Empire. Let us all remember "BLACK LIVES DO MATTER". And are equal!
