My grandfather fought along side Joachim Pieper in the Leibstandarte for most of the war and he always told me that the Obersturmbanfurer always behaved like a gentleman. He also said that when Joachim Pieper found out about the Malmady incident he was furious. All sides did things that we cannot imagine today , we may never really know what happened however, because my grandfather was actually there and knew Joachim Pieper I prefer to believe him.

@@Noodle_7607 He wasn't the perpetrator. He was the Commanding Officer at the head of a Panzer Division of 4,800 men and 800 vehicles (117 tanks, 149 half-tracks, 24 artillery pieces, and more than 30 anti-aircraft weapons) that stretched behind him for several kilometres. A small number of men towards the rear of his Panzer column committed the act independently as they passed through Malmedy. It was not ordered by Peiper, nor even committed with his knowledge or in his presence, as he was kilometres away when it occurred. However, as the most senior Commanding Officer, he honourably assumed responsibility for the actions of his men. If you were ultimately in charge of nearly 5000 men and 800 vehicles in a column that stretched behind you for kilometres, could YOU watch & supervise every man simultaneously, all of the time, to make sure none of them stepped out of line or did anything wrong? If you're going to accuse the man of war crimes, at least get your facts straight. And it's well documented historical fact that U.S., Russian, British, Australian, and other Allied forces at various times during the war, committed war crimes and atrocities against civilians, especially in Germany, and against German soldiers & P.O.W.s. As the war ended and U.S. troops came upon German Military installations that had been abandoned with a skeleton crew of ordinary German soldiers to guard it, who had orders to surrender to the Americans when they arrived and hand over control of the facilities to them in an orderly manner without resistance. Having passed by some Concentration Camps earlier, some of the U.S. troops were full of hate, and when they arrived at these facilities and met the small group of SURRENDERED & UNARMED German soldiers left there to greet them and hand them the facility, the U.S. troops machine-gunned them to death for no reason. Their actions were later investigated by the U.S. Military and found to be a war crime, but no further actions were taken against them..... Double standards and hypocrisy, anyone? Why weren't they tried at Nuremberg for war crimes? These weren't the only atrocities committed by soldiers fighting for the Allies. NONE was accused or tried for their crimes. Are these sort of actions only a criminal act if a German perpetrates them? But it's just fine & dandy if a Yank, Limey, Russki, or Aussie does it? That's BS not justice. If you're going to assume the moral high ground, you have to apply those standards equally & unilaterally, AND hold your OWN men to those same standards & consequences. Otherwise you're just full of crap.

Wrong on all counts. When the Communists overthrew the Russian ruling class in 1917 (The Russian revolution) that ended all Russian fighting with Germany on the eastern front. In September 1939 Germany and Russia invaded Poland at the same time and held roughly half the country each. The UK and France had to decide which country to go to war with (could not fight both) so Germany it was, this was the start of WW2. The US declared war with Germany on Dec 11th 1941 - Over TWO years after it actually started!!!!

@michaelram3411 you think the nazis and their SS murderous thugs were protecting European civilisation get real Joachan Peiper was finnatical nazi who like a lot of the SS committed crimes against humanity .The only reason that Joachan Peiper avoided the death penalty was because a few allied interrogators used torture to get confessions from suspects and the prosecution used such evidence during the trial of men like Peiper if the allied prosecution had instead dumped the evidence gained under torture and instead done a whole new investigation against the SS defendants then Joachan Peiper and other SS defendants may well have been hanged for their crimes, instead because of the incompetence of the US prosecution back in 1946 it took until 1976 for a bunch of communist vigilantes to finally deliver Peiper's demise. The SS and its members committed horrible crimes against humanity right across Europe on behalf of the nazi party and their leader Adolf Hitler don't see Nazi Germany as defender of European civilisation and culture they nearly destroyed European civilisation and culture thank goodness they lost the war never forget.

I don’t believe Piper was responsible for Malmedy but the fact that those American soldiers were executed is a fact. Half of them had up execution style holes in their heads. Grandpa executed 22 German' Nazi's at "The Prison" and roughly 250 Nazi's were executed there. Grandpa kept the job because then he could help his German friend's their children with friendship and food. He learnt German and with the lack of anything else He stayed in the service, he was in Germany until 57'.

This is the first I heard of alleged torture of Peipers men by US interrogators in regard to the Malmedy massacre. Apparent!y, all of that caused an uproar at the time but was eventually swept under the rug without any official investigation of the allegations of brutal torture by the US interogators. There were witnesses to the Malmedy massacre, survivors. Several US soldiers managed to escape unscathed, others shot and injured but feigned death. The Russians had strong evidence against Peiper and the death squads from the eastern atrocities too. However, Peiper kampfgruppen legal defense claimed that US methods of interrogation forced them to confess to crimes they didn’t commit. That defense was a success for them and got their death sentences commuted, then to time served but this is totally unacceptable. However, the Peiper failure of justice might’ve been a catalyst to make our interrogation methods classified and administered only by trained intelligence personnel.

Very good and informative documentary. Peiper appears to be a stand up guy and professional soldier who was innocent of any direct involvement if the Malmedy massacre. Too bad he was a part of Hitler's SS and thus associated with their war crimes.

In the War Documentary Victory at Sea there is a scene showing US navy sailors shooting on japanese sailors who survived the previous Night's battle of Surigao Strait where US Navy Battle ships, Heavy cruisers, Light cruisers & destroyers intercepted & ambushed the Japanese Southern Force in transit towards the US landing beaches at Leyte, yet although documented on film, US Navy Top Brasses eere never Investigated or implicated in this violation of the Geneva convention. The japanese sailors were being shot by US Navy men while these japanese sailor survivors were treading water with thompsom submachine guns.

The Japanese were different than Germans. This is why the very concept of "War Crimes" is ridiculous. Japanese culture was one of extreme brutality towards enemies and non Japanese. This is an Asian mentality that is not only Japanese. The concept of "Gentleman" in warfare is 100% Christian European and it lacks little to know use anywhere in the world there was a warrior culture. And so getting back to the Japanese, US Sailors, Marines, and Soldiers killing Japanese who surrendered and or were unarmed is completely different than killing Germans who were POWs and or unarmed. Are they both "human"? Of course. But the difference is that if you surrendered to the Germans, you'd likely go to a POW camp and live with protections under the Geneva Convention. If you surrendered to the Japanese, odds are very likely you would be tortured to death. And everything from execution of Japanese to the Atomic bombs was entirely justified and rational given the circumstances.
