I've lived in Bakersfield CA for over 30 years. In that time I have watched our water bill go from $25 every other month to over $500 per month. My SoCalGas bill more than quadrupled this last year even though I used less gas. Our County, Kern County, has become one of the most corrupt. I actually had an Environmental Health Inspector at my business who blatantly tried to extort me for a bribe. Unbeknownst to him, we have security cameras with audio that I was able to use as evidence. It still took over two years for them to even look into the matter. And our Sheriff dept has gone downhill and are understaffed. Multiple "old-timers" have left the dept in droves because they could no longer stomach the abuses they saw. Many left the state for fear of retaliation for reporting these abuses. My wife and I are moving out of California within the next year. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

I live in Los Angeles near Hollywood. I am retired, my wife still works from home full-time. We bought our home in 95 as a foreclosure. It is now valued @ nearly 9 times what we paid for it. It is paid off, we have no debt. I don't have any idea where you got those electricity prices, but with the DWP as my electric provider, I'm paying $.19 and .25 per kW. tier 1 and tier 2. Even during the heat wave last year, I never went over tier 3 while running my AC for 8-10+ hours a day. I don't commute so I don't worry about gas for the cars. I shop for groceries and sure some things have gone up due to inflation, and yet my grocery bill doesn't seem to have gone up that much, in California, we don't pay sales tax on fresh food, unprepared food to cook at home. I am cost conscious and shop carefully to save money. Due to prop 13 my property taxes are low and stay low. My homeowners insurance including earthquake and umbrella is lower than Florida homeowners getting hit with tripling of just homeowners coverage. California may have earthquakes but the last one to hit Los Angeles was Northridge in 1994. Little or no damage had affected the home I bought in 95. When was the last hurricane to hit Florida, or yeah, last year with Ian, then 2018 with Michael and 2017 with Irma. The last big fire we had in Los Angeles was the Baldwin Hills fire in 1985 that burned 69 homes. Wildfires can hit every state in the west now. Texas in 2022 had the most wildfires ever, 12,400 fires with 650,000 acres. There are 22 states that have smaller populations than just the city of Los Angeles. If you include LA county, then only seven states have larger populations. So of course there's going to be a bigger homeless problem, drug problems, perception of crime, astronomical home prices. The state still has one of the lowest gun death rates in the country at 8.5 deaths per 100,000 people -- about 37% lower than the national average'. If California loses 3 million people, it would only be the population we had back in 2006- 36 million, and people were still complaining about traffic, high housing costs and crime. The people moving out and buying homes in other 'low cost states' sold their California homes and cashed in on the equity that few other states can match. Anyone selling a California home that they have had for over a decade, made bank. A 2+2 As Is fixer down the street just sold for $1.225 Million, down from $1.249 million asking, 3 1/2 weeks to closing. Such a bargain! All of those leaving, just means more homes on the market, more rentals, more job openings and higher pay for those still here. Please, stay in Florida, and Texas...we have horrible weather in Southern California, you will hate it. No humidity in summer and no snow in winter, no scared militia types carrying AR-15s and pistols strapped to their bodies over their tactical vests inside a CVS, no book banning, first ever Pride Nite at Disneyland, just terrible, so many liberal Democrats! The horror!

My mortgage is 1400. My electric bill is 90 a month. The weather is perfect. I don’t have to worry about hurricanes and tornadoes. California has 39 million people so 700k isn’t hurting us. 👋

I grew up in Southern CA during the 1960's and 1970's. It was a wonderful state back then. My parents bought a house in Mission Viejo, 2000 square feet for $13,000 in 1971. I felt safe and loved the community. They stayed in that home until they both passed on. When my brother and I sold their home in 2017 it sold for $640,000. I am now living in Wyoming. We bought a 4400 square foot home on nearly five acres for less than $170.00 a square foot. If you can stand the weather, it's a wonderful place to live.

We moved to the Bay Area late 2015 because of a job and because we wanted to move there. Our house was $1.3M & property taxes were $20K/year, plus very high state income taxes on top of that. My down payment was $400K & mortgage+taxes were $6,000/month. Living there is extremely difficult and it was the most stressful period in my life (I’ve worked for 30 years). California taxes and controls every aspect of your life, but you get little in return. Home prices rose dramatically while we were there, especially during Covid. We left 2022 and couldn’t be happier. California sucks.

I lived in Ventura county for the past 50 years, left last year. I miss the Southern California of 35 years ago. If the clock could be turned back, I will return in a heartbeat. It is sad to see how stupid actions by the government have ruined the state. I dream about a time when I can go back to the way it was back in the day, however, it’s over. It will never change back. On the bright side, I sold my home for a big profit right before the market started to crash in my area and bought something for cash somewhere else that is much better; and it is in a very beautiful area in the Midwest. It might be cold here in the winter, but the people are warm hearted, kind and it’s very pretty here.

Add to that the dwindling quality of life with wildfires every year, rampant crime, electrical blackouts, homelessness, horrible traffic, poop and needles in the streets, increasing taxes, sanctuary cities, and much more. Moreover, as a lifelong Republican my vote hasn't counted there for decades. It is obvious for all to see that CA is quickly becoming the world's largest slum. The question is not why are people leaving. The real question is why stay.

I could only dream back then in the 60's & 70's, to ever live there, but I did visit 15 years ago, and saw none of the homelessness and decay that is there now. I don't know how people can afford to live there anymore, unless you are exceedingly wealthy, or homeless. There doesn't seem to be much in the middle anymore.

So I can offer some thoughts: CA pros: -Weather along the coast -Surprisingly, income taxes are actually not that bad -Low real estate taxes -I like the diversity -The system here generally functions -Job opportunities are strong, especially high-paying tech jobs CA Negatives: -Housing prices are brutal anywhere near the coast -Areas away from the coast have brutal heat and lots of drugs/crime -Downtowns are homeless centers -Increasing property crime and stupid law response, it’s become almost normal to be in a store and watch some thief suddenly run off with something -Traffic in major cities, especially LA You have to be rich or have high income to live in CA. Otherwise it’s better to move.

Yes, I was afraid of moving out because I had a business in Cali but finally moved out and I do NOT regret it at ALL. Move to Houston and people here are so kind and friendly . Gas is $2.90 Don’t care about weather is not much of difference from Cali , Cali weather is changing a lot. Many big companies moving to Texas . LOVE TEXAS!!!

As a kid in the 50s and 60s California was the place to go. Never made it there and now there is no way you could pay me to even visit. I have a granddaughter there and she can't get over all the homeless people. Unless you have a six figure income you will end up on the streets. I didn't realize all the flooding. I love the Midwest. That tilting, crummy California house you showed is in my town, Palo Alto, Ca. I walked by it many times. A man was living in there and I had a feeling he inherited it and didn't want to lift a finger to fix. But finally, after some years of being propped up, someone bought it and fixed it up.

I lived in California for 30 years and never needed earthquake nor flood insurance. We never filed an insurance claim. Our property taxes and insurance remained pretty low, I'm assuming because of California pays both federal and state income taxes.

I've lived in California for the last half a century and I don't recognize this place you are talking about. Yes the home prices are obscene, and the homelessness problem really blew up in the last few years, but the crime is only ticking up from lows we haven't seen since the 60s. SF is its own thing, the rest of the state is nothing like it. Taxes are not bad here, they're just honest about them and you see the real numbers up front unlike places like Texas that pretend to have low taxes, but then ramrod you with sneakily high property taxes and such. Also, natural disasters are localized events. All the flooding is in areas that are always prone to flooding but people chose to live there anyway. Same goes for the wildfires and mudslides which always hit people living on the hills and mountains. And if you move up there, you know the risks. It's no different than living on the south Florida coast and dealing with hurricanes. And I know they keep saying so many people are leaving California, but where are all the vacant homes? You still can't find one to save your life. And prices aren't coming down either. So either capitalism is lying, or the people saying people are fleeing California are. Speaking of lying, I noticed you have California Insider tagged in your description. That channel is nothing but a anti-California propaganda mill. Every story is a wild exaggeration of negative aspects of California. They pull the Fox News move of filming in skidrow and then acting like that is what the whole state is like. The high cost of living sounds bad but you get what you pay for. The opportunity here for jobs and businesses is insane. I see many videos talking about people leaving CA but days after days it just keeps getting more and more crowded here. What's up with that? People keep talking about moving out of CA to FL or TX just to find out unpleasant surprises waiting for them. Now they regret it and silently and secretly move back to CA unannounced. When they move out of CA, they announce it to the world. When they move back to CA, it's a total secrecy. That's why you always hear about CA exodus but never hear about the same people moving back to CA.

I have lived in Southern California for over 50 years. I have never heard of anyone’s house being flooded. Sounds like a Northern California thing AND a way for insurance companies to make more money. Also, earlier this year, I tried to switch insurance for my home to find a better rate. I was told insurance companies were going to stop writing home insurance policies in CA due to the “wild fires”. I said, Your penalizing the entire state for something that only happens in a small portion of the state.

my boss actually left right before the 2003 debacle. he asked me/us to go with him but we sadly stayed. he sold his house (when it was still worth something) and left...very little time. since then i have had a moderate stroke, so i can't do my job any longer and my days of jumping from ladder to ladder are over....i'm kinda stuck here for the moment. my new job is as the manager of a duplex house complex, but when this job ends, i can't afford to live here so in brief, i'll be selling most of my possesions off at crackhead prices and headed east...till the truck breaks. at least i'll be out of california.

Not a balanced perspective. Yes property taxes are high but proposition 13 holds the rate of appreciation of 2% a year. So if you bought your house sometime ago, you pay very little. If you earn less than $150,000 your health insurance is subsidized. If you have solar panels on your house you pay zero for electricity. State income taxes are low, unless you earn huge amounts of income.

I live in Maryland why not as bad as California. The Government in Maryland knows how to raise taxes and spend your money here just as well. I would have loved to live in California but with the crime and Housing you are right, it is now just a dream and nothing more!

Don’t blame anyone, people voted for higher prices, higher crime rates, higher fees, higher costs of housing, higher inflation and finally it overwhelmed them, forcing them to leave the state of CA.

California homeowners insurance has doubled… and some insurance companies have left the state and some are not issuing new policies.

The graph in the beginning of the taxes in California is a bit inaccurate in my opinion from what we experienced in California (moved out in 2020) compared to the only state I can use as an example, ignorant to other areas of the country, Arizona. The 1/2 acre property with the 1964 1550 sqft home we sold for $535K, purchased two years earlier for $415K had property tax of $6500/year compared to the 40 acre, 1600sqft manufactured home with 2400sqft shop had property tax at $700/yearly. (I do not know the actual "rate" of each. Percent rate, etc.) So I would only assume the very small percentage shown might very well be inaccurate(?) show of comparison. The "Select sales (excise) tax may also be as well. I do know that, in some counties here the sales tax is up to 10% on the South East area of Arizona compared to some of the areas of California at 7.25% for a lower area but don't recall seeing it at 10% though may be incorrect fro areas I hadn't experienced with LA around 8.5(ish) Fuel prices in Cali were brutal for me as a small service contractor and my small fleet of service vehicles. At the time of moving to Arizona I was paying as low as $.99/gal for Regular Unleaded at some locations here compared to 3X-4X in Cali. Vehicle insurance was a bit less for the Southern California area compared to Arizona but a few $100/yearly. Probably due to Monsoon Season or wild animals on so many roads in Arizona areas. (Only an assumption) Selling our 1/2 acre in a nice area in the Inland Empire for the $535,000 during the Covid experiences, much lower than it's valued now, $800,000 and rising compared to the $120,000 for the 40 acre property is a typical "selling the California shack and buying the Arizona mansion" cliche but Arizona will never have all that California has. i could go snow skiing and surf in the same day while living in the inland Empire we were located. We could visit the desert or the mountain or the beaches or even the cities. There is everything to do with what ever kind of land you would like to live/visit in California, unlike other areas of the country. The biggest problem in California is the corrupt government. The power supplier, So Cal; Edison. The rate there was at around $.42/KWH compared to $>10 KWH here. California is a wonderful place to live and I do miss it a bit other than what it takes to survive due to the financial price there. I could never afford the houses I had owned there. to ever think about the concept of moving back again. Didn't mean to write a book. My apologies.

While I think the video raises good points and we can't really deny most of them, this has to be taken in context. For example, prices are shown for Palo Alto properties. That's a very expensive place, full of rich people. The Apple CEO can be your neighbor. Combined with hardly any real state development and old money, it severely distorts the picture. It's like showing those 50M dollar apartments in Manhattan as a representation of the entire housing market. out, a lot of it has to do with housing prices. Good news is that many cities across CA have lost zoning powers. A lot of construction is happening, some are even mixed use neighborhoods. Hopefully that will help house prices - but it will take time. That's not to say houses are cheap, far from it. Any place highly desirable will be expensive and this is no exception. No wonder CA is so heavily populated, demand is sky high. If housing was more accessible there would be a flood of people moving in. Which brings me to... Salaries. Sure, if you are not in tech or other high paid professions, you are screwed. And that trickles down across the entire market - whoever manages to remain in business has to charge more to remain solvent, and so services are expensive. If you *are* in tech, California is hard to beat. Last I checked my total como was higher than large company CEOs in other states and I'm not even in a FAANG. A huge chunk is taken out of paychecks, but it still doesn't pay to move elsewhere for a ridiculous pay cut. Executives make an absolutely insane amount of money. That does create a massive income disparity and it is one of the causes of the crime increase. Combined with lack of housing you get homeless. Property taxes? Texas is almost double. Infrastructure needs some love, but highways are still better than many states and even D.C. I was actually checking water quality last night and California generally has outstanding water supplies. Not all places taste amazing due to mineral content, but it's great. Lot of effort made in tackling air quality too. Power is indeed an issue - because regulators have been sleep at the wheel. California is infested by PG&E in the north and Edison in the south, plus whatever atrocity handles San Diego. Those are predatory companies and PG&E has been responsible for several wildfires. On the other hand, there are utilities like Silicon Valley Power(providing power to Santa Clara), with *much* cheaper rates(comparable or under the nation average) while providing 100% renewable power for residential customers. It can be done, but requires politicians and cities to get off their butts. Fuel is expensive but it's not just because of formulation. It's expensive to get fuel to CA, mostly done with ships. A pipeline would do wonders, but would probably have to cross sierras and several national parks and forests. As for earthquakes, maybe one day another big one will hit. Most of them are non events and people barely feel them. I felt two in the last 7 years. Most happen deep underground, often in the middle of nowhere. Similarly, I don't really know who is getting their homes flooded. "storms", when they even happen, are pretty tame. Drainage is generally good. Maybe if you are close to a river or whatever, that might account for the 2% that do carry flood insurance. Bottom line, It's not perfect, but it's not all gloom and doom either. Some people unfortunately are getting priced out and the state should do more about that. But people should do their part - if there's one thing that screws up CA, it's NIMBYism

In May 2023, California economy became 4 biggest in the world. It takes Texas, Florida and Georgia to equal California economy. best place to own a business. Companies headquarters may move, but they keep the business running in the state. only 15% of California's live in area that are wooded/forest the last earthquake that had anyone killed was 1994. Look it up where the average cost to insurance a home is below the nation average. This guy is envious of California. I've been to North Carolina and am sorry, but not enough opportunity in a state this guy is pushing you toward.

Each of us has to weigh their given situation. If one has owned their home for over 25 years and bought it cheap and the home is paid for, one can live a simple life with what one needs without spending for the extras one does not need to have. Unless the place you live at has become a hell-hole, one is inviting other problems by moving to another imperfect location.

I grew up in Los Angeles, CA. There are nice neighborhoods that I would like to live in (such as: Altadena and La Crescenta), but I would need a minimum of $200,000 for a DOWN PAYMENT on a house that's probably 100 years old and has rusty pipes. The cost of houses is overrated. The time when I should've financed a house is long gone because I've spent most of my life trying to earn enough money to SURVIVE. My biggest fear right now is the rent being too damn high.

Left CA 3 years ago, went to Spring Branch, TX, and LOVE it here. #1 reason, cost of living. #2 is the politics - WAY too liberal. #3 was crime, and it was rising as the state became more liberal.

As California resident I can say many statements are not really true. First, California public schools are very good because there is no bullying. I have 2 kids came from Elementary to High schools and no single episode known if there was any bullying (applying to anyone not only them). So they can go to school and feel safe there focusing on study. The elementary school had rating 5 on greatschools when my son entered and rating 8 when graduated because kids were doing great with tests in his school years. Second, wildfires happen but air quality issues are exaggerated. Bay Area I remember may be a week or two for past years when we had ashes in the air. Also, electricity prices are high but California is blessed with Sun so you can go Solar... I left California and went to Alabama. Moved back because of better job opportunities. Very places in California is going to charge that for a 1,200 sqft

Why only 1/3 of the nation’s homeless population living in California. What I would like to see is 99% of the nation’s homeless population living in California. If the homeless population here just keeps increasing and increasing and it does this just might happen.
