Ever wonder what it would be like to be a fishing guide in remote Alaska? Well, come take a look behind the scenes with me (‪@fishwithjd‬) and I’ll take you along for a peek into what really happens on a given day.
In this case, you’ll get to see what takes place on a busy day called “changeover.” This is the day, which happens every 5 days, when we have to ferry the lodge’s out-going guests to town by boat and then haul them and their luggage and fish boxes to the airport.
It’s a long day with lots of heavy lifting, a sometimes sketchy boat trip across the bay and a full day of guiding. Then, there’s the whole fish cleaning part…
So, sit back and enjoy this rare glimpse into the true world of the Alaska fishing guide lifestyle.

Do you run soft plastic twitchers because it’s easier, or do you prefer them over traditional rabbit strip tied jigs?

Oh I like messing around with soft plastics a lot. And they work great too!

How many customer cycles do you see a season? Second question, important question: is it true that the saltiest seadogs are ALWAYS assigned to the gear barge, or is there a line up the morning of, and the most presentable guides on a give day ferry the clients?

I think it’s something like 15 or 17 rotations. None of us are presentable after being in the bush for weeks 🤣

Purely from a seaman’s point of view (boat performance, water conditions, etc) do you prefer to haul the gear or do you prefer to transport clients on the change over day?

I like the gear hauling boat. Get a chance to be alone for a few minutes!
