I applaud you all on your business decision. You took an honest look at the current state of your product, came to the conclusion that it was substandard, scrapped it and drastically improved it. I purchased my Fanatic Complete set and am eagerly awaiting its delivery.

Not sure if you watched any of the promo videos before launch where Army Painter got pro painters to try out the Fanatic line. In the videos, the painters praised how much better they are and just repeatedly trashing how bad their old paints were, and Army Painter just sat there taking it. They know how bad their old paints were. I give Army Painter props for leaving in the trashing of their old paints. I think the biggest pro of this is that Army Painter is one of the most available paint lines out there and also often the lowest cost. This means a lot of new people to the hobby buy them. With the old paints, it probably turned a lot of people off the painting hobby because of how bad the paint jobs would come out and how hard to use they were. Having this new line is important to for that reason.

Exactly! And the fact they were brave enough to go see those painters shows what it means to them as a company. I love what they have done and enjoy the shit out of the new paints. Plus, it's easier to get a hold of than any other brand.

@@OldManRogersYou get more paint per pot for a lower price than Citadel paints (which is probably the most used brand out there) - and fanatic paints being usually thicker also means that you can (and possibly should) dilute the paint you have a bit more thus having even more mL worth of "paint" to actually paint with.

Im glad i can consider Army Painter as a viable brand of paint again, they are some of the most easilly accesible here in Scandinavia, but their old range was just a nope. Happy they've stepped up.

Same. I've been sticking to Citadel as they're easiest to get a hold of a wide range, and are used in a lot of tutorials. But this really opens my available options.

Hey Zumi, I just purchased an Army Painter mega set. I used to just buy my paints by color as needed, but I was recently in a motorcycle accident and shattered my leg, so I’m not very mobile right now. I needed a good set that wasn’t too many paints, but still had a good span of colors, which is why I went with this set. I was concerned though, about previous AP reviews. Even though you didn’t think AP is the ‘best in the world’, your review at least gave me confidence that I made a good purchase. Thank you! 🙂

I rode the hype train for the entire marketing campaign lol. I know you are pretty biased against them so I was really looking forward to seeing your review of the new line! The fact that you used to have them as "dog****" and now consider them around C to B tier. Thats a huge leap from a tough critic, and they can consider it a win lol. "Best" is better pronounced as "boast" and its not opinion or fact so much as advertising lol Solid review! very fair and thorough. I think my biggest takeaway wasn't about the quality of their product so much as the quality of their effort to elevate their product.

As a starter (and a bit colourblind) hobbyist, right now I'm more interested in their triad system rather than any other feature. If other brands implemented a clear system and maybe a consistent naming convention, well, that would be very interesting! Great video, as always!

As someone with more money than sense, I picked up the complete speed paint 2.0 range. I realized pretty quickly what it wasn't good at and picked up the entire fanatic range. I'm a beginner. None of them were frustrating to use. I think what they do best is accessibility. The boxes come with instructions. The labeling makes sense. I never was frustrated or lost. For an ultra skilled KZfaqr, maybe they aren't the best. For somebody who has no idea what they are doing, I feel like AP has done a good job of providing quality paints and made them approachable. Damn I should have posted on Reddit. This is way too long for YT.

Have to agree, the old Army painter paints were awful, to say the least. I received my new complete Fanatic Paint set this week, and so far, after trying a few of the paints, I'm enjoying using them, and the slight satin finish to some paints actually helps me see any mistakes I've made, as I'm partially sighted, so the slight sheen helps me see where the primer or layer paints are showing through. I make my own washes/glazes, so haven't used the shades in the set yet. However, the inclusion of new brushes with set has had me jumping for joy, as they include a detail brush, a larger layering brush, and a dry-brush too. I'd never used the "Toblerone" handle style brushes before, after over 50 years of using just round handled brushes, and they are remarkably comfortable to hold/use, and so I may just make the leap and invest in a full set of these brushes now, as my painting hand doesn't ache as much after a heavy session after using this type 🙂 By the way, absolutely LOVE your sweater 😉 Where did you get it from, as I SO want one for myself now 😊

i really didnt like just how negative this was. it seemed your previous experience with army painter color your experience. They improved alot, Speedpaint and air paints are fantastic paints aswell. it seemed like you where reading for reasons to not like these.

@cblack04_92 it's to make the point that the triads are helpful for beginners but not advanced painters, having a preset value scale for a colour is very helpful for beginners but it's not something that'll be helpful for people who've been painting for years so know how to work with their colours.

The cross-triad thing seemed a bit left-field, but I don't see how anything he said isn't fair? Mirrors some of the comments some of other reviewers have mentioned to me. Things like the paints being pastel from added white/grey/whatever, that's something Juan Hidalgo pointed out as well. If you're not prepared for reviews of things you like to have negatives, maybe don't watch reviews.

Very similar to Juan Hidalgo's arguments, and probably correct. Note that yes, Vallejo and AK are super cheap and available in Spain, but in the US.... they aren't. My local store sells AK for $5 a bottle. We also get them with major delays: The Vallejo XpressPaint 2.0 arrived to US stores this week, while Spain had them in November.Even when the stores theoretically carries them, the most popular colors disappear quickly, and aren't restocked fast. In comparison, I can get Army Painter products in basically as many stores as I can get Citadel, and often deeply discounted. That crazy complete set of 216 paints is 645 dollars down the street: I am not buying such a monstrosity, but it's two dollars cheaper per bottle than AK. So as far as hobby equipment goes, pricing and availability varies so much, every visit to Spain includes a bag full of paint and brushes.

The triad is genius. I'm a new painter and having a gradient of paints ready for me to learn and work through removes a whole lot of anxiety for me. I don't know why more companies don't do it.

@@alternate3787 over here if you buy the army painter sets the stores here will give a discount, making AKI more expensive. AKI also sell their paint sets packaged very differently so the army painter sets gives you more mileage because they cover a wider spectrum of colours.

the some paints satin, some paints matte, is an issue for most of the good paints. it's just down to the material used in these high pigment paints, and how they react with the solution

I'm quite happy with the new set, though I've noticed they don't actually have warm dark reds in there, their darker reds go purple real fast instead.

My only problem with their new sets is that you don't have an entry level set with just 15-20 colors including metallics and washes. Instead you have to buy the monster set with 50 colours for 150+ bucks. EDIT: False information. They do have a starter set. Its just not on Amazon yet.

I just bought it, it's quite light (only 11 pots including a wash and no orange) but the price is decent, about 35€. I think I prefer their old "Pure red", it was redder lol. However the improvements of metallics, Plate mail notably, are impressive.

Hope these make AP more available in stores. I have tended to use them over Vallejo and citadel, mainly due to price as my core colours, I like citadels technical paints, and really the only Vallejo product I buy is the plastic putty it's my favourite gap filler for minor gaps. But for paints unless I need a very specific shade like a military uniform, AP I feel once mixed up properly did the same job cheaper. I also like APs brushes for price to performance. Another brand that does well is SMS their acrylics are great too.

So a thought, this brings their paints in line with more modern lines, in my opinion they are better than GWs line. They have a vert wide selection of paints to build from. Most likely this will compliment your favorites not replace them. As far as price goes they are still cheaper than GW and scale 75 and whatnot, especially when nearly everything is is going to be thinned at least 1:1 paint and water and the bottles are bigger. Then it is hard to beat amazon availability, which none of the other ranges seem to do. One of the negatives is their really bright colors tend to break down more when thinning to glaze like levels and so you have to use their mediums instead of water and they are missing some depth of color choices in their very wide range. Overall though they are a solid paint line that should definitely supplement your existing paints and should not be avoided like the old line. Good video, though i think you are more critical than I in regards to the line.

Good video, honest opinion and the same conclusion I have come to based on various reviews. Pick up some colors as you need them and, in my case, grab the new washes and a couple of the effects paints. Thanks for the video.

New to the hobby (although I will be a historical vice fantasy/sci-f war gamer). I have been looking all over for paint comparisons but of course 95% of such content is fantasy focused. However, reviews of paint regardless of miniature is very helpful. I ran across your video and found something you said interesting. Folks from the UK and into Warhammer would naturally gravitate towards Citadel. The bit you mentioned about Warlord was a light bulb moment. In that historical space they chose Army Painter. So my question is if you were in my shoes as a newcomer who will focus mostly on 18-19 th century historical miniature painting, who would you go with. I am from the U.S. so no bias or history with any company at all. It seems on the surface that Vallejo model color is well suited to historical but then again I like the base/layer/highlight ease with Citadel.. again as a beginner. I very much welcome suggestions. Thanks!!

Army painter is definitely cheaper than ak or vallejo here, but i love all 3 ranges. I ended up getting the complete fanatic range, and have no regrets. The "best paint in the world"was just marketing hype though lol

Yeah he said his point in a bad way basically he means that these are useless for experienced painters which I don't fully agree BCS it's always a nice to have rather than nothing like all the other brands but that's my opinion

It's an interesting decision what they decided to include in the 50 paint kit, knowing theyve got the 200+ kit as well. You're right, 20% of the set being just blues and teals seems a bit extreme. They looke xcellent though tbf

So refreshing! My experience so far - opaque over dark if glooped straight from the bottle. Thinned to a workable consistency, AK 3rd Gen perform much better.

le seul avantage que je vois à cette marque et plus particulièrement à cet étiquetage. c'est que pour moi qui suis daltonien le fait d'avoir 6 teintes différentes qui soient repérées sur la bouteille, cela me facilte le choix des couleurs. mais si effectivement c'est plus cher.... je continuerai avec mes peintures habituelles.

Solid, fair review. Their lighter tones are good enough, but anything darker than a supposed "midtone" is far to desaturated. The Reds are either too orange or too pink. The darkest red in Warm Red triad is actually orange, and its quite annoying.

All of the colours are slightly desaturated which I'm not a fan of. Good for base coating i guess.

I've heard that from some opinions from what I've tested and painted so far you can get a good saturation after testing most of them, some dry with a punchy saturation kick after they dry I was surprised with some reds being whitish when applied but becoming really RED when dried so idk maybe it's more of the medium they use rather than white pigments ?

Vallejo NEW game colors are still cheaper (online retailers) and better. A huge upside is the new Clear plastic bottles they come in as well. You can see the paint colors, what a concept! AP paints are clearly more accessible so I can see them getting more sales in America. Either way it's good for the hobby when more paints are available and we're having these brand discussions.

of course, this description of these colors is a bit cheesy, nowadays there are many good colors for painting miniatures... I recently bought a set of 50 colors and they are great. The colors are super packaged and the added candies always impress.. Thanks to the manufacturer of the colors...

I mostly use AK and Vallejo, both model and game, but I look forward to trying Army Painter’s new cool reds, most reds seem to want to be warm so will be fun to try some cool reds :)

Same, I mainly bought a bunch of AK and a couple of Vellejo. The Vellejo need a bit more thinning but feel like they go a bit further. I was using "grimy grey" alot and then tried Citidel wraithbone.. its unbelievable how dogcrap it is compared to AK.

The reds in the AP lineup have a real pink hue! Liquitex cadmium red is literally the only “red red” I’ve found.

Myslím si, že je super, že na těch barvách makají a zlepšují je na základě zpětné vazby. Jestli budou dál pokračovat, jednou možná nejlepší budou. Pro mě je to momentálně přínosné hlavně v tom, že mají ty seřazené triády. Jako barvoslepý jsem si tohle u ostatních barev vždy musel dohledávat a psát na papír, jak barvy k sobě míchat a jak je navazovat v odstínech.

From all the reviews and podcast I have listened to I get the impression that this is an update to compete with the new generation of hobby paint, not to surpass them. I'll try out a couple paints but it won't replace my collection of mostly Vallejo. All the buzz lately is mostly because Army Painter is readily available and apparently has good marketing. Meanwhile the new Vallejo Model Color range is about to drop in two weeks and I have yet to see anyone talk about it outside of the people involved.

The speed paints from armypainter are realy the best, but for normal paints i also stick to valejo. Im glad my hobby shop has a huge shelve of them and i dont have to order it :3

They're not gonna be pulling me away from pro acryl and ak interactive. It's good that they're finally competitive because the old army painter paints were fucking awful

To be honest - it is becoming ridiculous and stupid. "We have a new better paint!", "No, we have an even better paint!", "But our dipping inks are bettah!". Fuck it, I don't have an infinite bank account, so I am stickiing with Vallejo. Never put me down 20 years ago and today I find them overall the best paints I use and enjoy. Yeah, and I like Xpress color WAY more than Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0. And I am leaving GW out of discussion, bever buying ANYTHING related to GW =)

There's nothing wrong with the OG army painter set as long as you have a vortex mixer or similar. The OG ones have a lot of medium in the tops and if there not mixed well then yes they don't perform.

I've bought the complete set and I am really happy so far. As you mentioned, some of the colours are a bit on the understaurated side but other than that I like them. The triads help me personally because i suck at mixing colors conistently and end with slightly different hues that just look weird. If I really need to push contrast or need a really colourfull I still use Kimera colors, but they are a pain to use IMO. Edit: My biggest critique is that you must shake them like hell (might be the problem with your satin black) otherwise they behave weird.

Yeah I've found that even my vortex mixer can't actually do much to shake them up properly, not at this thickness.

I'm not a big fan of the "effects" paints, would have loved for them to not be included in the set. I'd have loved to have the warm reds in the mega set. I think a "build your own mega-set" option would have been really nice.

Man, I'm entirely behind that idea of building your own set. Would probably be hell on their packaging department, but I bet a lot of people would pay more (but less than if they got them individually of course) for that sort of thing. Might even be worth sending them an email about

I just ordered Pro Acryl for the first time after almost enirely using army painter. I hope it's as good as everyone says! The army painter white is so rubbish

Always buy paints by the colours you need unless you're just starting out then get a set. Each brand has better and worse colours to others, or specific shades you use heaps so you dont need to mix them. Think i've got like 5-6 paint brands atm all have upsides and downsides

I was irritated when I bought their matt black and found it more satin than ether Vallejo gc or mc black. Only AP thing I will buy is their washes.

I never had a worst time with army painters reds… like Christ on a cracker….. I love painting red and this stuff just never mixed well or covered. I hope this stuff is better

My big issue with a lot of the army painter reviews so far have been that no one says anything negative about them or it's a very minor negative and everything else is glowing positive. I think a lot of people were sponsored in making those videos

Hmmm. I don't think that's what they meant by the color triad. Pretty sure triads are just meant to be used for a gradient within a single hue. P3 and other paints have done this in the past. I don't think it's anything new. But maybe I missed that pitch. Where I do think it helps is working with shadows that involve multiple hues.

The sudden overexaggerated praise towards Army Painter's new paints was very suspicious to me. Thanks for the objective review. The real story is they didn't go from "horrible" to "gold standard" They just became decent to use.

You are the only youtyber that pointed that these colors have always white in them, it’smsomething i noticed immediately from th first videos: AP did not make a miracle for coverage, they just made every color a pastel variant adding white. Also no one considers that this kind of “perfect coverage” while usefulmfor beginners and basecoating, iis a pain in th but when w alk about glazing and using the naturall transparency of th paints to our advantage to make gradients

Juan Hidalgo noticed the same thing, with them apparently having more white or other opaque pigments added in. As for the perfect coverage thing, just thin it more? IMO, a thicker base is much better, since you can turn a thick paint into a thin one, but the inverse isn't true (without dehydrating the paint and running the risk of ruining it - don't do this). And if I'm glazing with a super-thin paint, I often want to have an opaque version of the same colour on hand for the same project, so not having it cover poorly out of the bottle is valuable there. But YMMV.

The new paints are too thick for my purposes as I glaze a _LOT_ and thicker means I gotta put more work into my glazes. Imma stick to my ProAcryls. Thems good.

I don't know what it is with black paint, but it seems that unless you apply a very thin, almost watery, final layer it won't look matte, regardless of brand. As for the 'best paint' part, there is no best range, it all depends on what you're doing. Best for the average painter? That might seem plausible. For youtubers and artists who have refined their techniques and want select properties from each of their colors? Less plausible. There are in my opinion best pots or bottles of paint out there. Citadel's Retributor Armor is practically renowned at this point.
