I was going to literally write a paper for my senior thesis about this, but there wasn’t sufficient enough evidence to write a 15 page paper on it. For specifically the topic of anime there just wasn’t enough evidence to support the claim. I actually might have a bit of a theory on why the donut lips are used, going back to the mangas the show's were based on. I know from researching, and my own small experience, that most older manga was drawn by hand. Heck, some were done entirely by hand even leading up to the pandemic. And they'd be using ink, only really able to do black and white. In order to do the skin correctly, they might have had to crosshatch the whole face, which could be pretty messy, not to mention time-consuming. They *could* use screentone, but that's really expensive. I think they had to try and exaggerate features to get the message across, which might be why they sort of ended up looking like that. Not to excuse it, don't get me wrong. Just as an explanation as to why it could happen. The time it took to crosshatch, plus the price of screentone, could also be why black characters were less common. Just a theory though :). Whatever your opinions on this, have a wonderful day/night!

No it’s just undeniable that a lot of black people factually have larger lips. And I don’t care about how many exceptions you can think of, it’s still just a fact. If you assume it’s racist then you are admitting that you think lesser of a black person if their features are exaggerated. And if you say you don’t, then you are admitting that you don’t have a problem with exaggerated features. If you were capable of nuance then you would not be so quick to assume racism
@EvieWren
@EvieWren Ай бұрын
@@zzodysseuszz Tbf, it *is* a pretty nuanced subject, yeah. Although with the things AJarts brought up- the similarity to Blackface being a big one, although it is possible its a coincidence- make it clear we aren't just assuming racism, we do have some evidence. The exaggerated lips on their own aren't the big problem, I don't think. To me, the 'donut lips' kind of end up looking like caricatures though. Anyways, I do agree with you! Sometimes they do have larger lips, and it's a beautiful feature. The main problem just sort of comes down to how they're portrayed. Although- I should probably have led with this from the very start- *I am not black*. I just do a lot of research on the subject as an artist and an author. Also, I'm sorry if this reply is a bit scattered, I only woke up a bit ago and am still a bit groggy.

@@zzodysseuszz This is a point I think needs to be brought up (especially in regards Toriyama). Do we think that people from other countries know the significance of blackface? I remember seeing a KZfaq short last year (unfortunately I can't link it) where a foreigner goes to Japan and asks a few younger japanese people about some details surrounding WWII (including the mustache man) and got some general blank responses. He then asks an older japanese person about it and he explains that is pretty natural given how the system doesn't delve deep onto the topic. My point in saying this is, why the hell would other people know about black face? We see how people get offended when other languages have phrases similar to the N-Word, despite those words likely coming into existance before European enslavement was a thing. I remember the incident where a french makeup artist caught backlash for cosplaying another black Tik-Toker and genuinely know what is going on. America makes an active effort to hide it's past because the country was quite literally built on racism, so why would other countries know about our most taboo topic. This is especially true in regards to Japan, given how isolationist the country still is. A lot of manga authors most likely don't know what they are doing is wrong, and a lot of the time they're just exaggerating features based on their art-style. Take Mr. Black from DB for example. Despite looking like a class Jim-Crow depiction of a black person, he is treated with the upmost seriousness by the story and is an actual antagonist. He completely lacks the traits that the Jim-Crow era forced onto us, and that leads me to believe that Toriyama just didn't know. You could make a case for Murata, but his art-style exaggerates facial features as well, and given how much respect he gave Miles Morales in his illustration of him, I doubt he's calling back to that. SAO's artist and Isayama probably didn't depict black people like that because it was politically correct, but because it fit with their art-style.
@frothyground7075
@frothyground7075 Ай бұрын
I take it as stylistic ignorance. All of the black characters depicted with the donut lips are from 90's anime. This is media coming from a largely homogenized country whose ideas of black people probably came largely from media especially during those times. With modernization and accessibility to each other designs have adapted.
@Takejiro24
@Takejiro24 Ай бұрын
I think it's largely ignorance as well. Americans in manga/anime tend to be pretty one note in their depictions are loud, brash, rude, gun-toting American flag wearing blondes. And they are almost always blondes despite America being one of the most diverse places. Like you said, accessibility to other designs has helped reflect reality a bit closer.

I also think that it's hard not to see things through the lens of an American. For example, you used images of Mr. Popo to show bad depictions of black people. For an American, it's easy to see the comparison to blackface in minstrel shows. However, on the other hand, it's been speculated that his design is actually based on Mahakala, a deity in Hinduism and Buddhism. Mahakala has black or sometimes blue skin. Being the wrathful type, he is often shown bearing teeth with his mouth open, which makes his mouth appear large and red. It's easy to see the comparison to Mr. Popo here as well. It makes sense that they would design a deity character after a deity from an Eastern religion. And I wouldn't expect someone from Japan to notice a resemblance to blackface since that's not part of their history. Granted, Toriyama did the donut lips for black characters all the time, but Mr. Popo clearly isn't human

There was Chief Todo and his niece Lisa Vanette from Bubblegum Crisis, and Pony from Gall Force: The Eternal Story. One of the 12 principles of animation is to make everything exaggerated; it’s a cartoon, it’s meant to be out of this world. Although I’m not defending mockery of black face, it’s very common for cartoons to have fairly exaggerated proportions based on common tropes, and these representations of black characters might simply be a by product of that.

No, the use of black caricatures in early media and even media that persists through today was about mockery. Much of it was even propaganda that was not only limited to “blacks” but also Asians. There were terrible depictions of Asians and how they lived found in everything from Looney Tunes to Superman. “Blackface” was a dominant form of entertainment and was used to spread stereotypes to mock and influence the thinking of the masses. Interestingly enough, a lot of these depictions existed in media deemed for children. Start them young I suppose. 🤷‍♂️

A series that I believe did a fairly good job of being caricature for caricature sake was early Simpsons. They mocked everyone and were even in their usage of caricature across the board. If I see a person doing something that reminds me of my own bad actions but I don't know their intentions, it is my fault to feel bad about it and I have no right to blame them for my own past. Some of the characters you showed aren't even black, and you said this later in the video, so I really dont understand why you didn't take your own advice and actually look into the characters you showed. Another good point all the comments are making is, Japan is an ISLAND NATION, with VERY LIMITED views on people from other cultures. Including black people, and other minorities. Not only do they have limited access to begin with, but having any intrest in these things at all is actually looked down on. So a Japanese manga writer would suffer from excessive incusivity. Japanese people aren't american, it isn't in their culture to include everyone and everything so no one feels left out. I think this video would have came across much better had you only talked about where Japanese creators had gotten it right, and reccomended animes black americans can watch if they wanted to see good depictons. This yap session over a complete non-issue and then shameless plug at the end is not at all a good combo though.

I also wouldn't put it past Japan to be making shots at racism considering most foreigners are treated with some level of racism. weather that's certain people only renting out places to Japanese people and some clubs only letting Japanese people into them. Its actually pretty common and you can fact check me on that. I think that differences should be set aside and we should all work together to represent each other fairly and honestly. Big lips =/= donut lips. No black person has grooveless lips with no philtrum. You fail to confront the obvious issue with donut lips which is the oversimplification of black features, which is intentional and considering that it's lower effort to create these characters as compared to white skinned characters with detailed lips (to achieve a result of a character that's in many cases, recognizably lower quality than surrounding characters), and also considering there's already an existing precedent of donut lips being used in anti-black caricatures historically, it's plainly racist.

I think tonal direction also has a role in some character designs that some might perceive as racist. In a cartoon where all the human characters are designed to look ugly or super exaggerated (take Ub Iwerks’ ComiColor series for instance), it makes sense that the black characters would be depicted in an equally unflattering manner since all the characters are designed to look that way, regardless of their ethnicity. Nowadays, some aspects might be toned down, but they would still need to have some shared stylized exaggeration. Likewise, while some designs are definitely lifted from racist depictions, they still made some sense in the limitations of the medium they were created in. For example, in an old back & white cartoon from the early ‘30s, you would need to give the darker characters some highlighted features in order to make the language and drawing easily visible to the audience. Nowadays, a limitation like that can be avoided thanks to HD quality videos.

America and the west has been OBSESSED with “black” people and how they are portrayed for the longest time. There are those who made it their mission to create a narrative surrounding how black people look and act since the beginning of circulated media. Anime and manga was heavily influenced by Euro American comics and media. Therefore, that representation is what was portrayed and thought to be normal, as most of their population had very little interaction with or even ever came across an actual “black” person. America and the west has been largely responsible for what black representation looked like for generations, and they did it often for nefarious purposes and to program a mindset in the population about black people.
@Nosh5
@Nosh5 Ай бұрын
The majority of "racist" black people or ethics people in anime was due to their lack of exposure to other cultures that didn't really open up until the growth of the internet in the 90s. Most design choices were influenced by western media. Even the 1st anime was designed after Disney's Snow White. Because of the long length of time for media to reach different ares of the world, most countries had media from the USA decades old. If you listened to russian or korean pop in the 90s, it sounded like it came from the 80s.

@@Scruffy-qi3ik True. Anyone who had seen The Promised Neverland knows that practically *EVERYONE* gains exaggerated expressions when they are trying to be creepy or the tone calls for such. *Spoilers for The Promised Neverland for those who haven't seen it* Like when Ray reveals that he was working with his mother, he pulls off the exaggerated slasher smile, grinning from ear to ear while baring his teeth and outstretching his hands like he's about to play an orchestra. It's.....more than a little silly. Same for Sister Krone. Probably not the effect the creator intended but it does make them look like goobers.

Gotta realize... countries like Japan didnt get alot of black people .. thus drawing them back then would of been a bit harder.. America on the other hand... Thats a different story so its no surprise that Japan would draw based of what they see America does when it comes to drawing black characters not knowing that the reason its drawn that wat is for mocking kr racist purposes. Hell even they way they'd draw asian characters too.

For curiosity's sake, what about Chocolove's current design? I presume the nose may still come across as an issue, though if you look far enough you will find other characters in the series with a similar case. A reason why his design is comical per se is because the character is a aspiring comedian, but I won't say it's a justification. As for the name, while sounds like chocolate, he is really named after a medicine called Chocola BB. Interestingly, there's another character in Shaman King who was designed with similar lips and didn't change in the new adaptation, that being Muscle Punch. He is Japanese and tanned skin but there is no mention of him having black heritage. I don't mean to defend the design, however I think Chocolove is an example of a black character who visually may be flawed but is written well in terms of character and story.

Sorry, but bro aint Black. And your whole arguement falls apart as soon as you Say "hey but there's actually people with similar features IRL". That on it's own is a tell that You just don't like donut lips, which is fair. Still, many One Piece characters are depicted with donut lips. Don Krieg comes of the top of My head and you can't tell me he's Black. The Mr. Popo thing is even more damning because it shows you did'nt research on the slightest. Yes, representation before was Bad. And it might not be good enough now. But it's better. Maybe that aint enough. But I bet a japanese could Say the same about how the west depicts them. I get your point. I feel You, bro. But nah. You lack nuance

There are other influences as well but if u google those vs googling blackface its very clear where the most inspiration came from.
