Lately the water in it keeps turning cloudy. Any ideas why? I have had this tank set up for several years and this is the first time that it has been cloudy.

Thank you for addressing the myth about drip acclimation. I used to think that was the safest way but now I just plop and drop and my fish appear way less stressed. I still can't convince my neighbor of this but old habits die hard for some.
@MultiRainday
@MultiRainday 3 жыл бұрын
Actually they failed to explain it even further. For fish like neon tetras that are very very fragile when it comes to water changes, you really need to drip acclimate it with clean stock water and the aquarium water to neutralize the ammonia. Do this until you have added 3 times more water than it had in the bag. And take out the fish, don't pour out the water in the bag, just transfer the fish in the aquarium .
@arthurheine5631
@arthurheine5631 3 жыл бұрын
@@MultiRainday I came back to this video just to talk about this. I saw it and decided to try out their simpler method with a group of 12 neon tetras that I recently bought. 6 of them only got acclimated to the temperature and I plopped them in. The other 6 got drip acclimated. The group that was only acclimated to the temperature lost 50% of their population (which is sad af). I think they should have explained it better and not just dropped the info into such a small video.

A couple more bits of advice I would give people when I was selling them fish as a manager at Petsmart: Do all of your shopping in the store first before getting your fish bagged. Go straight home from there and get the fish floating. No pit stops. Do not expect me to bag you fish when you have the tank in a box in your cart. Feed the fish already in the tank before you come to get new ones and hold off feeding for a day with the lights off in the tank to let the new arrivals settle in first. If adding new fish to an established tank of territorial species like African cichlids it’s a good idea to move the decor around first to weaken their defense responses toward the newcomers. Love your channel and the true/false format.

today I was at my local pet store and i was really surprised about how great care they take of their stock every betta was in their own small tank with live plants, heather, filter..etc.. Guppies were kept in groups in maybe 20 gallon or more. Other fish was the same. They have so many usefull information and signs everywhere fish aren't for bowls and normal goldfish aren't for aquariums and had a size chart of them. All fish seemed happy and healthy and didn't have any problems with fins or gills. They also had an amazing community tank! So i think the thing when people say pet stores have bad fish care it isn't always true.

As a saltwater person, the drip acclimate myth is so true. I know many of my friends would drip acclimate their fish, and most of them died. You should only do drip acclimate invertebrates, where they produce way less ammonia and they are way more sensitive to the changes of water.

Good series. I really enjoyed the drip acclamation one. The only thing I Drip Acclimate are some marine inverts. Float the bag sure, it equalizes the temperature slowly. But most things are ok with minor pH swings. The only time you need to drip is when things are super sensitive to salinity change (like a star fish or sensitive corals). But I certainly remember a box store tilling me my first Betta needed to be drip acclimated....

I have been told to use half hour temperature acclimation, then add half a cup of water from the aquarium I am putting them in and leave them for 10 minutes, repeat two more times for a total of three times. Then add fish to tank. I have added another step. I pour the water from the bag through a net into a catch container. When it fills up, I pour the water into a bucket or other larger container until very little water is left. Then I pour the fish and minim al water into my aquarium with lights out. Let them de-stress overnight and then feed on the 2nd day.

Freaking exhaust port! I laughed so hard at Lisa's expression! The only extra step I take when buying fish is that I take a styrofoam cooler and put the fish in that. In the winter it gets brutal cold and in the summer it gets brutal hot here. In the cooler they are in a dark safe area where the temps wont fluctuate as quickly our hour drive home. We almost never go and buy just one fish at a time since we travel so far for them. Generally we buy fish that can share the quarantine tank when we get back home.

This explains a lot actually. I don't know if PetSmart still does this, but back when I worked there 15+ years ago, all the new fish were drip acclimated upon arrival to the store. Not only was it a pain in the "exhaust port", but sometimes we would lose up to 50% of some species from the shipments. I hope this is now common knowledge in the industry and they've stopped that practice.

I have seen quite a few drip acclamations videos. While I myself have not done this, I always thought it was interesting. I love your explanation why you should not do it and only reenforces me to keep with my method of transfering fish. Thank you for that.

I live an hour away from the fish stores. Does this mean I shouldn’t drip acclimate any of my fish or shrimp? Great video too! The true or false series seems quite creative and I am loving them!

I have bought fish from a large variety of stores but have had the best luck with fish from our local Petco. Out of more than 5o current fish all but 2 of them have come from Petco. Every fish I have bought from supposedly good quality fish specialty stores have not survived much past their quarantine time.

I learned the acclimation from Rachel Oleary (no offense to your channel because you're teaching the same thing) but yeah she said float them to acclimate for temperature and put them in because of the same reasons you're saying. And my mortality rate dropped like 1000 percent. I was always taught either drip or add water bit by but not knowing about the ammonia and burning etc thats happening. Since then I've lost less than a handful of fish and that's within 48 hrs (normally less). So that's some good info they're sharing guys and so true from personal experience. GREAT VIDEO! I buy from petco/petsmart and our local specialty fish store in spokane Wa (it’s called fish world) we have a 50+% death rate from the box stores and have not lost a single fish purchased from fish world.

does this myth about drip acclimation also count for shrimps and snails? I heard that shrimps are very sensitive to sudden changes and have a high risk of dying if you don't drip acclimate them... but now I'm not so sure what to believe anymore.

I've done that with shrimps. I honestly have better results with that than floating. I'm taking that tip with a grain of salt tbh

is it normal in the usa to bag fish in tank water when buying at shop as the guy at 7.03 clearly used water from the tank ( cos thats a pretty bad idea ) and not fresh water

Good video and good information, however I have to disagree about drip acclimation. I used to always lose some shrimp when using the normal acclimation method, but since I set up a drip acclimation system, it's always a 100% survival rate.

to be fair, shrimp are more sensitive than most fish, and should specifically be drip acclimated; i believe he was talking exclusively about fish

@@mistermuse9543 I think the drip acclimation method works best when the specimen in the bag has low bioload in comparison to the amount of water available. Shrimps and small fish should be ok to drip acclimate. But bigger fish, like an Oscar, shouldn't go through this process. Thanks for your input!

Well drip acclimation is necessary to balance the salinity for the new fish. For freshwater is not necessary

I have been taking care of fish for about 20 or so years. I had 4 goldfish for about 4 years they all died from ick. First time this happened to me. I waited for a month or so and bought 6 different Goldfish and was so happy, until 4 died one by one again.😵 Thankfully I watched one of your shows which explained I was cleaning the tank " TOO MUCH" I kept remembering you kept saying " Take water out, put water in." It's that easy. I thought it was the fish.🙁 Now that the tank is fine we ordered 3 more fish. Thanks for taking the time to explain how bacteria works. Fish aren't cheap as you know.🙋‍♀️

random quick question. Is it possible to set up your aquarium in a way that the plants produce enough oxygen for the fish to breathe and take in all the nitrogenous waste produced by the fish? I am not saying you shouldnt have a filter, or that you shouldnt change the water. I am asking if it is possible to make a quasy easier maintenance situation where the plants give a very good symbiotic relationship with the fish. Thanks

I agree, i have kept cichlids and community fish since 2014 and NEVER drip acclimated a single one, even kept saltwater fish for awhile and didn't drip any of them either. It truly is a useless technique and probably prolongs the stress period.
@deccma

It is true that fish get stressed when shipped to the store. Then they get a small or large period of stability dependent on the period they are in the store. However, if they are shipped to the store then shortly afterward they are sold they get stressed again. This can be deadly. I believe this to be true. You should ask the store when the they got the last shipment. In my opinion you should not purchase newly arrived fish unless the store has a warranty period of 7 days minimum. Otherwise you should wait a week or two before buying them. I learned this the hard way.

About the adding oxygen to the bag. Proof you don't need to do it, is I used to drive an hour and thirty minutes to get fish and they never shot pure oxygen in the bag. They just did the old shake air into the bag and put the fish in. Never had issues with fish dying.

Lisa is so right about the O2. If the fish bag ain't overcrowded and you know the fish ain't gonna be in the bag for more than a day, it should be fine. The fish ain't gonna breathe directly from the air you put in anyway. O2 gets dissolved / diluted into the water that is triggered by water movement. And guess what? The air tank that you use when you go on diving is only 21% oxygen and the rest is nitrogen.
