Coming from a man around your age with a family business that dates back over 150 years and that I'm removed from I can understand the in between the lines. Honestly we have to keep the old knowledge and evolve. My family would not evolve to the time hence the split in my venture. However a good American made product with knowledge backing it will always be successful. I will always support you in any venture as long as you keep transparency and honesty.

I love this kind of information! I’m very much a “why” person. Tell me why something is the way it is. Lately, all I can find on gardening channels is ‘how to’s’ all for newbies in the garden. I know that’s a booming market currently, but I feel like it’s over saturated, and there’s not much other gardening information being addressed. I’ve always enjoyed your research knowledge that you shared on the Hoss channel, and I’m glad you’re carrying on that tradition. It makes a difference to me, and helps me to make informed decisions. Sometimes it’s just cool tid-bits and facts that I never knew. In regards to the quality of seeds that I’ve purchased from Hoss Tools, I found them to be top notch. After watching this video, I now know that you were the “why” behind that. Your research and care of the products sold shows in the end result. Thank you, Travis. You’re much appreciated!

I don't know how I found you, but I am so glad I did. I watched all of your videos from the "previous" company and even called them to find out if you were OK. (No comment). Thought something might have happened to you. My husband and I are in our eighties, and we are just now trying to start a small garden. We will definitely stay with your channel. Will you focus some time on newbie small gardeners? We have a lot of friends and family members who are just starting and have no idea what they are doing. We need all of the help we can get. All I can say is, I’ve bought seeds from all over and I’ve never had 97-100% germination consistently until I found Hoss. You provided us with quality seeds and I enjoyed your breakdown of varieties that y’all sold. I also enjoy this new format and channel. Sometimes, change is good.

@@LazyDogFarm Hey Travis I’m curious what your thoughts are on your Roma tomato varieties...tachi and invincible? Both did well for me but those invincible plants got massive. 5ft tall and bushed out like my hair in the 80’s. Tachi much more compact plant and better flavor IMO.

@@lisareis8117 The two varieties are pretty similar in size in my garden. They just get so loaded that they really test the strength of the twine. They take a little more tying than traditional determinate varieties. I don't have any ripe yet to compare flavor.

Thanks! Your right, there’s a wide variety of reasons folks buy seeds from where they do. Perhaps they mostly do originate from a small group of distributors. My thing has always been buy local. Alaska although geographically large is still just a small community at heart. We’re lucky to have an outlet (Alaska mill and feed) that carries a wide selection of seeds…hybrid, heirloom, you name it, just rack after rack of types and brands, plus anything a small home farm might need for chickens, goats etc. Didn't know until this video the seeds came from just a few sources…but it still feels good to buy from a local place.

I'm a sucker for heirlooms, so I tend to buy from smaller companies or from private sellers (like on Ebay). The weirder, the better. I also save a lot of my own seeds. I'm currently studying horticulture science at university so I can become a plant breeder and run my own nursery.

I miss you on row by row, its just not the same. Its because of you my wife wants to kill me. I took your advice on the cucumber varieties that are gynecious and they made unbelievable. We couldn't eat enough to keep up with the producing and had to start bring buckets of them to family members. The Calypso and Stonewall are my go to varieties. Great job on what you do, keep it up.

I truly enjoyed this seeds video. I only been really gardening this past 3 years I always dabble in growing I by a few packed here and there. Most be then if I happen to see a interesting pack of seeds in the where ever store. I would buy them Wasn't doing a great success of them. But it was fun. Now for 6 years. I taking it more seriously. Thanks to ebay and Utube. I'm learning what I was doing wrong. All so many interesting plants. But now I buy so many plants and seeds. And now you answered my question about where I get my seeds from. Why on internet that so many companies seed information all sound the same. Same pictures, And a generic descriptions. Your valuable information on growing onions. Was a mind blower. Short day vs long day. So I went looking for some Short day onion seeds.And found out many seeds companies don't even tell you that important information. I had already bought 2 long seeds, by mistake. So I sent message to some different sellers on line .One company had a harsh answer. I was alittle hot at this. 2 companies quickly answered my question professionally. THANK YOU , THANK YOU

Based on your recommendations a couple years ago while working for Hoss my garden has transformed. Went from buying Bonnie plants at local box stores and Fair at best seeds from my local southern states to these superior product purchased at Hoss. From fertilizer injector/ drip irrigation , cover cropping to seed starting with excellent seed varieties and product my gardening has transformed. Everybody that has seen it or has tasted it has been bewildered and amazed. I’ve just commented “ 35 years of gardening a man should learn how to grow”. Little did they know I’ve step my game up based on your videos and the row by row show. Thanks Travis! As long as you garden and share I’m going to be watching and learning! Besides fishing, gardening is my favorite passion!

Great video, Travis, very informative. I just want to say that I purchased the majority of my seeds for my fall and summer garden from Hoss Tool and another well known online supplier and Hoss seed packets all contained more seeds. From carrots to peppers and more, Hoss is generous and I will continue to support what you helped build. Love my Hoss tools, too.

AMAZING! this was the most informative video I've seen on seeds. I've ordered many Hoss seeds and have been very happy with the result...now I know why. But, I am disturbed with your reference to "formerly with Hoss Company". I hope you and your dad didn't have a falling out. Both of you have some good info for us.

For awhile I bought only heirloom seeds... but are now getting back to trying some hybrids. Praying for your fast recovery, whatever that becomes.

I was the manager of the "in house" seed lab for a major cotton seed company. Like you said, the company continued to sell previous years seeds as long as they continued to meet national germination levels. Then, when the seed dropped below 80% germ, they'd blend it with excellent fresh seed which actually might have 98% germ. The customer probably never actually received any of that really high germ seed because it was used to keep the older seed up to national standards.

I love getting my hands on rare and unusual seeds - coaxing the good ones along until there are enough seeds to share. My hope is that seed preservation will be my “legacy”. Speaking of seeds, one old Italian lady we lived next to in San Jose, CA got tomatoes from her friend and shared some with us. They were big, red, and delicious. Turns out this tomato was developed over the years for local conditions by saving the best seeds from the best plant with no others to cross pollinate for decades. The tomatoes adapted to local conditions with best results as she kept the best of the best year after year! She developed her own heirloom tomato seeds!

Good for her! I bet those were tasty! From my genetics classes way back in the day, it takes about six generations to really develop that local acclimation. So it's not easy, but it can be done.

I buy flower seeds from a company that has country of origin on the packets. Much as how you have mentioned here that seeds are coming from all over the world, I like to have this information. I had not realized that seed shortages were because of international shipping snafus. Excellent and informative video. Thanks.

Cover crops usually have country of origin as well. For some reason most vegetables don't.

💥👏👏Wonderful content. I used to would not put much thought into that packet of seeds I held in my hands when I headed to the checkout. My husband would joke that I had a "Gangrene" thumb and couldn't grow anything or keep anything alive long enough. (I fooled him. 27 years of marriage I kept him alive and again he jokes "barely"). 🤣 My point is without him saying you need to learn how to grow potatoes that led me to many KZfaq channels beginning with Hoss Tools and as I have watched and learned I have discovered that I appreciate the companies that I buy my seeds from more now. It also makes a difference that I can hear and see someone discuss the seeds rather than just picking a packet from the store or online just from a picture. Watching the homestead channels sometimes (more often than not) determine where I buy my seeds from. So when I throw that seed mix over that seed or harvest that fruit from something I've grown, I will give more thought And thank you(to God for those of you who have learned and teach us) about the quality of what you do to help us do what we need to do. I know this was a long comment but I just have literally learned so much I am still astounded with all I've learned and still have yet to learn that I can give to my children and possibly future grandchildren.

Another great video Travis. I think you are cutting yourself short by not getting into the seed selling game brother. You have a knack for explaining and instructing how to grow vegetables. You have so much experience already in selling products. I really believe if you just started small like with a dozen different kinds of seeds your business would boom fast. Travis, I have been following you for over a year. Thanks for giving us a little background on your transition to the present. What is a big influence for me in buying any seed, is show and tell. Show how the particular seed variety preforms, in growth, production and taste. I never buy cheap seed of anything, because my time in growing and planting is too short to take chances. By the way, I have my Avalon corn planted (another planting in two weeks), and the rain today will take care of watering. Oh, I also enjoy your "Pop Up Life " channel. While not a camper myself, it is both interesting and enjoyable to watch. Your children seem to really let their Imagination go, and are a joy . Take care and all the best from Southern N.H.

Thank you for lifting the veil of seed sourcing and product origination...these are the " secrets" of the industry that are rarely shared. Even though I am second gen. farmer this helped to educate me and as we know " knowledge is power"...keep those types of vids coming as they are really necessary to help us " clod busters" survive.

I’ve had great success with all the varieties of seeds I’ve purchased from you when you were with Hoss. Maybe one day if Lazy Dog Farm seeds became available I could purchase some of those to try. Yes, I definitely would purchase seeds from you.

No plans to sell seeds. But we'll continue to grow a wide variety of crops and always try new varieties so you can see how they grow.

I was a buyer for a large retailer and Travis is bang on the money in regards to dealing with distributors and original source vendors. One of the main reasons original source vendors do not want to deal with smaller retailers is credit and managing of these retailers. Would you rather deal with 10 distributors or 10,000 retailers.

Thank you for this very informational video on seeds. I had no idea. I thought they were grown in several regions of the USA so the germination would be great to grow for your area. So when I found the company you use to work for I was excited to find seeds for my region...yep I feel dumb. Will be paying close attention to the names and distributors that seem to work in our area. Thanks again....very educational.

Yep. Just because a retail seed company is in a particular location, that doesn't mean the seeds were grown there.

Germination % is often legally required. It is in Washington state.

Great info! I buy seeds everywhere. Some are better than others. I bought a lot from Hoss this year and last and most had great germination, some had quite a few less seeds than the pocket indicated but no biggie. One of the companies that everyone raves about is Baker Creek but in my experience their seeds are very hit and miss. You gotta try lots of places to find the ones that have the best stuff.

One big trick for making seeds look cheaper is pricing packets the same price but the weight will be different...sometimes they put a number of seeds per packet instead of weight also, making it even harder to figure out the true value of the packet compared to another

Yeah I never liked the weight thing for small packets. Telling me how many grams is in a seed packet doesn't really tell me how many row feet I can plant unless I know the seeds per pound and am willing to do the conversion.

I wish this was regulated/standardized. I keep a spreadsheet of my seeds and include weight/number. Some in oz, some in grams or other metric measure, some in seed count. Try finding a chart that will tell you, say, how many onion seeds are in a gram. It's maddening to try and compare between brands, or figure out what you need for larger planting. Should be standardized across brands and varieties.

I supported many different companies based upon quality of seeds, customer service, dedication to shipping, honesty, availability, options, cost (never #1) cheap is not normally best nor is the highest... now I got to say...your video increased my love and respect for u. I live in Zone 7a (Maryville, TN) and things are just now starting to "cook". Corn is about 12" tall, Cucumbers & Scarlett Emperor beans are tall enough to train on the Monofilament netting and the Tomatoes aren't quite tall yet to weave... Thank you for all your knowledge and inspiration. I have always planted the same stuff every year but you've inspired me to venture out from the box store varieties and propagate from different resources and start from seeds. Thank you!!!

I have to tell you I really learned something today and thank you. I guess I was really naive when it comes to seeds. All I know is I ordered from several companies and there was a definite difference. There we some that I was really excited to try and they were a total flop but best supplier I found was from a one man band operation that is no frills but has amazing seeds. Really enjoyed this video and I only ordered seeds from johnny seeds and hoss tools because it seemed like the quality and germination rate was better. Also thank you for introducing me to jambalaya okra and gold prize squash. I thought I would never change until I tried these varieties.

The only important factor that you missed when it comes to deciding where to buy seeds is were the seeds grown locally? Locally grown seeds are already adapted to your local growing environment and seem to perform better, especially if the seed seller has been growing this variety for many years(or has local growers). There is also the benefit of supporting small business and local economy. Here in Florida there are a few good seed suppliers who only sell seeds grown in Florida, and the price is still very reasonable.

Having locally adapted seeds is definitely advantageous. Although it's important to note that it usually takes at least six generations for that local adaptability to be maintained in the genetics of a particular seed line.

That was interesting! I had a pretty good idea that’s how it worked. Sometimes I worry a little about the lack of genetic diversity of our seeds as they come from fewer and fewer sources. I have been ordering my seeds from Stokes for over 35 years, I like their quality, information and they are a good source of the treated seeds I prefer to start.
