I just bought a 1.5 person pollycotton tent. Fantastic in the wind, rain and snow. Zero condensation even in extreme cold.

I have an ozark trail 4 person, and I was amazed that it wasn’t that bad under the rain, yesterday I slept well and it was rainy and windy! So impressed for the price. I think it’s nylon since I have some reparations that my dog provoked, I saw some tiny holes but I slept just fine, so incredible

Thank you so much! I grew up camping in a canvas tent that my Grandparents used to camp in. Would like to get back to camping, but I was so worried about needing to get “the right tent” but also not wanting to spend a fortune in case we only go a few times, haha! Thank you for “permission” to start cheap. 🎉

Thanks so much. My fiancé and I just moved to an outdoorsy area on the west coast and want to get into camping. We want to have some hybrid between bush craft and backpack camping, with a focus on being stationary and comfortable, but also able to do some light hiking. We’ll most likely buy a canvas tent to start.

That's awesome, I hope you enjoy getting outdoors and camping! A canvas tent will be great for car camping and bushcraft stuff, but I'd avoid canvas for backpacking. The weight and bulk won't make for a pleasant experience. Ideally a guy needs a lightweight synthetic backpacking tent and a nice canvas car camping tent. I'd start with whatever you think you'll realistically do more. Cheers!

I finally got my springbar traveler tent. I'm gonna use a planar diesel heater. The two together are about the same cost as the highliner, maybe a little more, but I can't fight with a wood stove at night. I needed something to stay warm that I could turn on and go to bed and wake up with it still going 😁 You've been a big help in my picking so thank you!

Polyester is cheap. Every year I buy one in the fall to use as a shed for my RV in Arizona. By spring it is failed and torn. Cheap and disposable. No remote hope to reuse it next year.

There are different grades of polyester, but indeed they do break down, especially in prolonged installations in the sun.

If you were to guess. What would be the longevity of good quality of each if you had to live in one. I know canvas probably best just wondering months days or years of each if you can guess
@outdoorempirecom
@outdoorempirecom Жыл бұрын
Oh man, I'm not sure my guess would even be within the realm of possibility for each. Sun is a tent's worst enemy no matter the material and all else the same I'd estimate that a nylon tent would break down first. Then polyester would get brittle and lose its waterproofing. Then eventually a cotton canvas tent's fibers would degrade and get too thin to keep water out too. Depends on the climate too.

Very informative video, thank you for sharing. I want to buy 6m bell tent and I can only see two materials tents in my local camping shop. The first is cotton 3000mm and the second is polyester 5000mm. Is canvas the same as poly cotton? I only care about heavy rain and last longer in winter because weather in Middle East in winter will be raining and never snow. I'll camp for one month no need to concerne about weight nether size matters. What do you recommend for me Mr?
@outdoorempirecom
@outdoorempirecom Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful and thanks for reaching out! As far as I know, canvas is most commonly made of cotton, like what I referred to in the video. But it makes sense that there would be some polyester-cotton hybrid materials out there that are advertised as canvas too. If the material you are looking at is 100% polyester, I'd probably avoid that because it will likely be less comfortable inside and may not last as long as canvas. A true poly-cotton material could be interesting if it adds greater waterproofing as the 5000mm implies, but I don't have any direct experience with that type of tent so I can't say for sure. If the cotton material is cotton duck canvas that has been treated with some kind of silicone based waterproofing treatment, I'd probably lean towards that. That's what these tent companies do here in the US, but not sure where you're from. If it's straight cotton with a loose weave and no waterproofing treatment, I might go for that 5000mm rated material as long as it's a cotton-poly blend. Good luck to you sir!

Springbar tents out of Utah U.S.A. has good canvas tents. Another good company is Kodiak canvas tents. people say Springbar better but I don't know. I have a small Kodiak tent. It has a thick floor and the canvas is real good treated and waterproof. I've heard about the polycotton hybrid but never used any.
@abdula3535

@@donaldwortham2409 Polycooton material gives you the best of both worlds and it looks and feels natural not synthetic. It's breathble, worm on cold day, water proof, quit on windy day, and good looking when you tight up your tent (not sagging nether fluffy).

One thing I missed in the overview: how f-ed am I when I am (or god forbid my kids are) sleeping inside and the tent catches on fire?
@outdoorempirecom
@outdoorempirecom Жыл бұрын
Interesting question I haven't thought about too seriously. I can't imagine you'd be that much better off in any of these, but I suppose the cotton canvas would burn a bit slower and you'd have more space to maneuver and escape, but the synthetics would go up quick perhaps before you could really react and hopefully before you caught fire. I really don't know!
