If you're familiar with classic porsche 911 ownership, then you know they take a toll on your sanity. So the question becomes "why do we continue to own these cars when it always seems like they need one repair or another?
The truth of the matter is that I often ask myself that very question. But in this video I talk about how I'm taking a different, new mindset about how to enjoy the trials and tribulations of classic Porsche 911 ownership.
In many of my videos, I tell viewers about all of the positives of owning air cooled Porsches: the virtues of driving a slow car fast vs a fast car slow, the analog driving sensations that these cars delivery, as well as the fun community that surrounds these cars.
But the darker side of classic Porsche 911 ownership that I don't talk up as much involves the expenses of repairing, maintaining and sorting them along with the emotional frustration that chasing problems and gremlins involves.

The truth is: "It's awesome!" . I stumbled on this video as i'm finishing up the refresher project on my '87 carrera 3.2. When I heard creaking from the rear I thought it was a wheel bearing. So I started my first project to work on my car. Well, it turned out to be a sheared sway bar mount. By that time, plans changed to drop the engine and trans to do a refresh. Lots of leaking seals, hoses to be replaced, and trans 2nd/3rd synchros were worn. Life got in the way and 2 years on I'm just about to get everything back in the car. Lots of hours spent but totally worth it. No new car will give you the same smile on your face

Never had a situation where there was any question that the car was worth the repair. But you are absolutely correct that when you separate yourself from that being an question, it changes your perspective. My 993 has been a forever car for me since I bought it new and my goal is to always do what is best for the car long term and I think that has served me well.

Thank you Sir. Refreshing honesty and positivity. Great of you to also take along the fellow Rennthusiasts with for example, a bus pass. Thank you very much for the welcome atmosphere. Love the consistent updates allowing to follow along with the rebuild project. My '2 cents', if it's structural, repair to current standards, scuffs and marks, leave to show the history. Just clean up and spend funds on essentials. I have no problems with a spot or two. As always, great video, what an awesome 911 project and thanks again. Perhaps as an idea, check out local car detailers for freshening up the cabin carpet. There is a machine I know of that is a liquid vacuum type that cleans with water and brush.

Thanks for the videos Will. I'm in the process of refreshing an '83 SC and can relate to what you are going through. I like patina as well and debate dry ice cleaning the undercarriage vs keeping as is. I prefer keeping the little imperfections as they tell the story of what the car has been through over the years. My car was built when I was in high school and we both have been through a lot since then. One recommendation on the cleaning - there's a guy ChrisFix on KZfaq who has a few nice videos on detailing. I especially like the one about super cleaning a car interior. I'm sure you can use some of his techniques. I plan to try a steam cleaner for the carpet but not sure about the grease stains. Good luck. Its about the journey, not the destination.

I have a 986 that I bought a few months ago as my first Porsche (I know it’s not air cooled). I have been doing the work myself to fix things and can relate to the ownership frustration already. However when I drive it all that frustration disappears. I hope to some day get an air cooled car as I love the engineering in these cars. Also born and raised in the Triad and now living in the Triangle so love the local content!

Dry ice cleaning is an excellent way to “refresh” an underbody, engine bay, etc. Although it can get expensive, the results are worth it IMHO. Considering most classic or collector cars are not driven heavily and not driven (much) in inclement weather, a dry ice cleaning should last for a while. I also like it because then it helps me detect things sooner when something might not be right (e.g. develop small oil leak). Your car will be even better when you’re done with this current chapter! Keep up the great work.

Yup. I can relate. Bought my ‘77 narrow body 6 years ago and quickly got under water. 3.6 Engine swap, 915 rebuild, Suspension. But after the initial pain and tears the car has been solid and a great drive. Probably better than spending the same on depreciation on a newish car.

It's going to be sweet! Try using an upholstery steamer, carpet cleaner, soft bristle brush, etc. on the carpets. The door pockets...once they warp they tend to be difficult (originals seem to be made out some fiber board material). Or you could go RS, RS with recessed pleated pockets look period and cool. Slippery slope! Thanks for taking the time to make your videos Will.

As a former auto-body repairman, I love the idea of ice blasting as a way to get things looking new again as far as getting rid of years of road grime. However, I would also be keen on re-applying the original cosmoline back on it for rust protection. Assuming of course that the original polymer undercoating was still in good shape.

I enjoy your videos … keep up the great content 👍🏻 I own a 2022 GT3 Touring Manual - currently hunting for a 97 or 98 wide body C2S. Slim pickings out there and the prices are not easing up. I purchased a new 98 Arctic Silver over cashmere off the showroom floor in 1998(divorce raped in 2009). Today’s prices adjusted for inflation are still off the charts. Hoping to rejoin the air cooled family again soon. Thanks again for your effort in keeping the air cooled Porsche community going strong 😎😎😎

Dry ice cleaning would be a bit much for me. Dish soap (to break up the grease and oil) and a dollar store paintbrush would be my plan. Then a cheaper ceramic coating on everything I could reach to sorta lock it in place. In places that never see the sun it should protect it for years

It looks as though there’s a black plate covering the firewall in the smuggler’s box where a former a/c unit was? I have a huge hole in my 76S Targa where the VW A/C unit was dealer installed. I removed a condenser and fan last weekend and it left an enormous hole. Can’t imagine cutting the huge holes in a new car for A/C. Also have a hole in passenger fender from the frunk for the a/c hoses. Are you happy with the plate solution? Is it sealed well to prevent water intrusion? I’m trying to figure out a solution. Thanks

Hi Will, love the Ice green metallic on Cork combination. Those carpets look a bit too far gone... I recently did a carpet replace on my '85, as well as a a complete interior colour swap from Dark grey to two-tone Black on Cashmere, all done at home. Results were as good as professional but I was meticulous. Carpets were by far the easiest part. Check out Lakewell, they can source the carpets and door pocket parts. Can send you photos if you want to see the outcome. Best of luck!

I must be one of the lucky ones. Hope I'm not jinxing myself. Bought a very original 1970 911E in 2013, 73K miles on an original, never removed engine, original interior except incorrect seats after Recarros sold by seller (too bad). Did things myself like fix the door pockets and armrests, source correct seats and have them reupholstered, adjust clutch travel to my liking, replace oil level sender, rear brake caliper years later. The big issue was the engine cutting out and then backfiring when popping back on, like turning the ignition key on and off quickly. Didn't drive the car for one summer I was so disgusted with it. Happened upon a guy who told me to check an electrical junction, particularly pin 13 (I think). Sure enough, corroded, cleaned, problem solved, but not before replacing a blown original muffler from backfiring. Fast forward, 9 years, 4K miles and my next issue was a leaking (high pressure) fuel filter seal when I attended an air-cooled event and gas was running out of the car. Replaced that seal, probably with the original fuel filter and a bunch of original, very stiff fuel hoses. Car runs, drives, sings beautifully, always has. I have a spreadsheet of the work I do, Porsche 911E, 40 entries, 10 years, at least a 1/3 just maintenance. Got a 1971 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV in September of 22. Gorgeous car, thought i wouldn't have to touch it, 80 entries over two months sorting it out. Still have springs and shocks to go. I have other vintage cars also and know the least about the 911E mechanically because I've had to do so little. Will, I still have my son's 1991 BMW 318is from high school, he's 33 now, 188K miles, all original, runs great, needs suspension refreshing. First car I ever bought was a 1972 BMW 2002 my sophomore year of college in Colorado. Talk about the right car at the right time, what a blast. To and from school was an 1130-mile trip, that car just sang and smoothed out like glass at 90 mph on the interstate. Sorry for the long comment, but we have common interests in marques. The 911E sits next to a 356C. Totally different, but the 356 is a blast and where Porsche finds its roots.

Old cars = spending money. If you get emotional about it, you haven’t been in the game long enough. If you defer maintenance, then the car loses value (that’s why cars with extensive maintenance records are more valuable). Old cars with bad records that seem to be a deal are usually more expensive in the long run. Still you can get burned on the best cars. Just go into it with the attitude that something bad can happen. It’s part of the game.
