Hey Ben - Here goes a story - I did cash register hunting - never heard of that? When I was 13 back in 1963 - I went the a few stores by me at 22nd and Swan - Encanto Drug store and Food Giant and the cashiers would let me go through there cash register change. Oh my - there were barber dimes, buffalo and V nickels, lincoln cents, indian cents, Mercury dimes - you name it - THAT is hunting. The drug store Lady sold me a brand new box of 1961 Topps baseball cards - 5 cents a pack - 36 packs in a box - she gave me a discount and sold me 36 packs for 1.50 - wow. So I wish I still had those up-opened? Then - The Valley National Bank was at Speedway and Swan - I got to know a teller named Bill Vernay - yes I remember him well, he use to save interesting coins for me and give them to me at face value - a very nice man to say the least -- I knew him for several years after that and he even ordered me a Mint Sewn bag of 1968-S Lincoln Cents - that was cool - I found a couple of blank planchets and and one clipped. If I only knew??????? I helped out at a muffler shop on the opposite corner that my father worked at - and I would get .50 an hour from his boss for helping out. So I always had a few dollars. Those were the days my friend - we thought they would never end. Stay tuned for post #2

So if my "finds" percentage versus the number of rolls I searched was set in baseball terms, I would have been sent down to the minors a LONG time ago. With that said, I've found some neat stuff including a '98 Wide AM Lincoln Cent and a pair of struck-through-capped die examples that made me some good money.

Coin roll hunters are very important for the "Ecosystem" as they are able to catch and pull coins that were put into circulation before they are lost forever (some of which are collection dumps from collectors that have died, been stolen from or otherwise forgotten about or lost).

I enjoy going through rolls of coins I get from the bank each week. I'm still finding old Canadian nickels, dimes and quarters along with American coins. A few years ago I got a friend involved in it. He had young kids and found it to be a good way of teaching them math and history.

I found a BU 1892s $ in a roll. It has been graded a MS63. Now I should mention one thing,I found this coin, back in 1962. Prior to about 1965,it was worth someones time, going through rolls. I did from 1959 to about 1969. Only found the above valuable coin but did find many coins worth more than face. If you add up all of the hours that you spend on searching, then figure $15 an hour fast food pay, then add up the value of your keepers. My guess is 99% of the time you could make more $ flipping burgers. One would have a better chance finding a better item by buying 90% silver from a dealer. The bigger the dealer the less time he will have to search what he buys.

As a cashier, I see a smaller amount of coins, but 5 days a week 8 hours a day. Find plenty of 90% Silver each year, but mostly dimes, and even an occasional variety like the In God We Rust quarter. Did a few roll hunts, but just find being observant at work to be more worth the effort.

I started collecting coins in 1955, actively searched rolls through the early 60s and less so up until 1970, when I went into the army. Found all the early wheats except the keys. I had multiple rolls of no date 1913 nickels, multiple rolls of dated buffalos in the 1930s. I found dozens of decent Barber halves and 2 slick Seated Libertys. Silver dollars held no attraction for me, could get all you wanted from the bank for $1 each. I recall the toughest coins for me to find were dated SLQ. With the 12:05 12:05 disappearance of silver coins in the mid 60s I started saving war nickels--accumulated over 40 rolls by 1970, they were very common. My experience is pretty similar to that of my collecting friends. One uncle, who passed away at age 95 in 2000, was an avid collector since his youth. He was a bit of a mentor to me and once advised me to not waste my time on coins dated after 1933. He had a huge accumulation of coins picked from what was available in circulation at the earlier part of the century, all stored in little envelopes and cigar boxes. A lot of obsolete coinage also, given to him by friends who had the stuff laying around in drawers and not knowing what to do with it. He didn't save gold, but recalls in his younger days working in lumber camps in WI and being paid in gold. I no longer roll hunt, age and eyesigh limit my activities.

Great video. Those rolls on eBay are totally seeded. How many people back in the day just happened to save 729 cent rolls that just happened to have a Barber dime on the end. (And you hit it with the “bank” rolls of Morgan’s with a CC on the end. Lol. I searched dimes for a year the year prior to the beginning of Covid and kept count. In one year in addition to several silver halves and quarters (including 16 rolls of quarters that were 60% silver) I just kept up with the dimes. I found 324 dimes (plus the other I mentioned) in one year. No it isn’t lucrative. But it’s fun.

I have a coin roll hunting KZfaq Channel - mostly coin roll hunting Canadian coins, as well as looking at purchases, and other aspects of collecting. I have found a number of rare and interesting finds - but a lot of the time, you don't find much of value. Unlike perhaps other coin roll hunting KZfaqrs, I actually film all of my hunts and release them all as videos - whether I find anything or not. Anyone wanting an honest view of what to expect in real world coin roll hunting (in Canada, at least) will get that on my channel. I have recently been doing exactly what you've suggested, and purchasing coin lots from a local antique dealer/estate buyer. These are often included in a purchase he's made, and aren't of particular interest to him (and he doesn't have the time or expertise to go through them all). I get en excellent price, and he can turn over inventory quickly. And I can share the fun and excitement of going through them to find the hidden gems with my viewers. Thanks!

Hey Ben Post #2 - As far as coin roll hunting I am really no longer able to because of my poor eyesight, even with a magnifier it is too troublesome and not fun for me. So. I still liked searching - I started searching Dollar bills from the bank for FANCY serial numbers - In fact what I found out is that it is easier to find bills that are worth far more than face value than hunting coins for silver or errors. At least I can read the serial numbers easier and I find it fun. I have found quite a few good ones - but I have to do it judiciously, as buying $500 ones - searching them and taking them back. I mean I am using free money so to speak, to try and find valuable notes. Yes I still collect coins - but I buy mostly graded ones - I got some real nice ones from you. They are nice to me anyway. I am envious of your coin videos but they give me the opportunity to see gems that I would not be able to see on a daily basis - I know Ben, me rambling again. Best Wishes to you, your family and your staff to have a joyous holiday season and continuing through the years moving forward.

I'll do coin roll hunting as i maybe watch a football or baseball game. I primarily look for westpoint quarters or silver or errors. With pennies, you/I have a more chance of finding errors or older coins. With nickels, i/you search for silver or buffalo, which I ACTUALLY found 67 buffalo nickels between 3 customer wrapped rolls one time. Customer wrapped rolls is not a bad thing (sometimes). I mean sometimes, like recently, I got machine wrapped rolls from a bank, and all 10 rolls were from the 1980s, how does that even happen? Also I love when the tellers call me the "Coin guy" and ask me questions about coins.

yeah ben, dont be afraid to call it what it is sometimes a fools folly. I dont know how many boxes of jfk halves ive gone through only to get skunked. when i do find silver its 40%. ill take that all day. ive reached out to some of these youtube guys who always seem to find incredible amounts of silver and ive asked them how they do it. they really dont say how, but tell us to keep looking. one thing they seem to have in common is they live in big urban areas. ive made relationships with several bank managers, who tell me that they pretty much use the same courier services, ive even talked to some of the courier managers to see if my guesstimate of coin denominations like half dollars and dollar coins keep rotating off the same pallets. all they can say is "your on the right track". in my town people mark the coins with a sharpie and sure enough i keep seeing these marks over and over. I keep thinking that some old coin collector will kick the bucket and his wife wont know what to do with his collection and thats the box that ill open up one day. thanks for all your help. hope to see you in ABQ in feb.

My mom had a bunch of lose change and coin rolls at home. Being the collector I am I had to go through it to make sure there was nothing of value. It was all modern stuff. It was tedious and boring . The best time for coin roll hunting was back when I started collecting in the late 1960’s because back then you could actually find great stuff especially when you got a roll of dimes, quarters or halves that were full of silver. Real unsearched rolls from the 60’s and prior are pretty difficult to find for sale and you for sure are not going to get them from a bank now !! However for a young person or a new collector the search is always fun and I must admit I like watching these type of video's on You Tube .

I’ve never been into coin roll hunting, but I’m just old enough to remember when one could go in to certain banks and get Morgan and Peace dollars in most any quantity - even 1,000-coin canvas bags - for face value. This was circa 1960-1963 when there was very little demand for these large coins from the general public, and the price of Silver was fixed at $1.29/oz. There’s a U.S. Bank branch in Diablo, CA. Hey, Ben. Thanks for the video and the apology! I appreciate you clarifying your opinion on CRH. To your point, no one wants to watch a video where no silver is found that would just be boring so all the videos have finds. So, the majority of the videos of people finding valuable coins are legit. I have received a ton of hateful and angry messages calling my most viewed video fake but I can assure you it’s 100% real. It’s hard to believe I found 4 full rolls of 90% silver halves but it happens. Anyway, thanks for the video and apology!

I coin roll NOT for varieties and errors unless very obvious. I do it to train my eye -- and I find that some of the big grading companies underestimate how hard it is to find in circulating coins some high quality ones. Even an uncirculated set of say 2022 D cents will reveal how hard it is to find ones with little or no spotting from the mint process. Sometimes I keep modern coins that later I put back in circulation --- mainly because I find a better quality one or it is really not worth keeping. I like to search mint sets to find high quality uncs --- and it isn't always easy. Those mint sets especially from the 70's and early 80's can be quite a challenge. The coins are much better preserved in the packaging from the mid 1980's onward and improves to this day (the problem though for mint sets after 2006 when the Presidential dollars were issued, the cost increased quite a bit and it can be expensive to search a bunch of them (on the other hand the quality is generally matching those of the 1990's or higher quality).

There are definitely multiple levels to this hobby, just like any hobby, sport, or occupation. CRH is a great way, at least for me, as an entry level collector to take very little risk with the money I have and I can spend a lot of idle time relaxing and learning and never knowing what's in the roll until it's opened, kind of like a scratch off lottery ticket. The difference is that if there is nothing in the roll I can return it and get my money back. That's a lot better then throwing 5 bucks for a lottery ticket in the trash. After 6 months or so of getting into this hobby and doing a fair amount of CRH I feel like there will never be an end to what I can learn about coins and have a ton of cheap fun doing it. I am also learning what to cherrypick buying single coins, both graded and ungraded mostly on ebay. Yup, been burned a few times.......but when you live in a small rural state and there are no real coin shops within 100 miles you do what you can to be active in the hobby you enjoy. Thanks Ben for all the information you share with us, I watch almost every video to the end, except when you get into the Morgan Dollars, they are the most boring thing ever.

Also I was recently disappointed when I ordered three coins from you and the PayPal went through but my order was screwed up and I lost the coins because your system failed for some reason. It's tough enough trying to be ahead of everybody else to purchase the coins now I have to worry about the failure of your system processing my purchases. Very disappointing!!! I hope I will have another opportunity to purchase the these coins again in the future. There should be some kind of arrangement that if these coins are available your customer would be at the front of the line because your system made mistakes. Just a little food for thought!!! Going to a coin show may be coin hunting, but is not coin roll hunting. I have been coin roll hunting for 65 years. It is a great hobby, fun, and a few times you make money with almost 100% non-loss thing to do. I do lose once in a great while, but not much, when someone shorts the roll.

If you want to coin hunt find the oldest person in town and ask to buy their change jar. You find a 90 year old been in the same house youre laughing.

I think coin toll hunting is a waste of time. Id rather just find the coin i want in nice bu condition at a shop lol

It's not always about the end result. Opening rolls and finding unique coins is fun and relaxing. Some people only do it for the end result, but there are a lot of people that just enjoy the process. Plus if there were no "coin roll hunters" then every time some crack head dumps a collection to buy crack those coins will be lost forever.

I do think that many of these videos are faked. I've watched some videos where huge numbers of silver coins are found in rolls. It is theoretically possible but statistically very unlikely. Also, metal detecting videos. I watched one where a guy finds a Barber quarter, which of course turns out to be a 1901-s. Yeah, that's likely. Big finds get more views and that's what they are after.

We're rapidly approaching a point where coin companies - and eventually via a phone app - will utilize AI to analyze and classify a coin. Every variety and mint error in a fraction of a second, with the ability to flag anything unknown to the hobby. At which point I will retire my 10x loop.

roll hunting is not numismatics. you might as well get yourself a metal detector and go to the beach. nothing different from deep sea hunters who look for treasure but are not numismatists.

All fake videos are terrible. Its a form of cheating to steal views from legitimate creators.
