I dont know where the whole exfoliation as part of double cleansing came from, i have never heard of that, the double cleansing i know is using an oil based cleanser and massaging with your finger then washing with water followed by a gentle foaming or milky cleanser. This method is not at all harsh and no physical abrasion involved. And i do it daily to remove sunscreen and excess oil without drying out my skin.

The kind of double cleanse you talk about is more on the western method. double cleanse in Asia specifically in Korea does not involve any tools and physical exfoliation. Its a big No No. Oil cleanser and a mild non soap cleanser like a glossier/ cetaphil/ or physiogel will do and pat on non alcoholic hydrating toners 7x layer with an essence and moisturizer. A kind of moisturizer that does not easily absorbed by your skin. Your skin has to be very bouncy after. Its means its well hydrated.

From what I understand, the "original" asian-style double cleansing method does not involve any type of exfoliation or abrasion - it is just an oil-based cleanser followed by a low-PH gel. Is it not a bit misleading to include cleansing brushes and exfoliators in it? I have used the method on my seriously sensitive skin for over a year now and it has been working out splendidly. No exfoliation though.

I agree. Double Cleansing is just using an oil-based cleanser (to dissolve what's heavy on the top of your skin such as sunscreen and makeup) and a water-based one afterwards (to clean up skin properly). I've never heard about the exfoliation part, maybe it's something western people made up.

all skincare practises is made up, what do you mean? you're acting as if it's "fake". double cleanse is cleansing twice, it can mean different things in different places. the term double cleanse has existed since the early twentieth century which i am sure had a plethora of meanings aside from the east asian practises of double cleansing so don't act like there's only "one" way of double cleansing.
@henobread

I didn't mean to say it has only one way of double cleansing or the one shown here is fake. I think she addressed the subject because of the "trend" western people are getting now that comes originally (meaning origin of the trend, I'm not here to discuss who did it first) from eastern cultures, just like the "hydrating toner" and "7-skin method". Eastern skincare has the exfoliation part, but they recommend 2-3 times a week, depending on skin type, and are not incorporated in the double cleansing method. It was not my intention to downsize western practices or make a mean comment.

She’s still going for the same thought: it’s a dual process. She did recommend getting a different cleanser for the eyes for smudge and water proof eye make-up, but def sticking with a single cleanser and rather focus on simplifying the entire routine. I love how she goes for the basic here and started solving the problem than just simply covering them up.

i think one thing to take into consideration is that more people are wearing sunscreen daily now. chemical sunscreens are easy to remove, but anything with zinc or titanium dioxide can be difficult to remove with a cleanser alone. When it comes to using a washcloth, using a new one every day and making sure to do it gentle enough can also difficult.

I love oil-based cleansers and balms even though I only use light weight foundations, because I wear waterproof mascara everyday. Eye makeup removers and cotton pads are more aggressive than an oil cleanser and my fingers, and is also less effective job. A find that a good rinse off oil-based cleanser doesn't require a second cleanse too. I do agree that less is more especially for my sensitive skin.

Love your channel as always but I really do believe this subject needs to be readdressed. Just look at the comment section. People are all confused because double cleansing means an oil cleanser and a gentle cleanser for most ppl. There isn’t exfoliation involved as what you’re arguing against
@JessieBanana
@JessieBanana 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of any sort of long wear makeup, but I disagree about the double cleanser. I use very light foundation/tinted moisturizer and non waterproof mascara, but I still prefer to use an oil cleanser first because it very gently and quickly removes makeup. I find it to be a lot more gentle than most cleansers, than I can just use gentle cleanser that wouldn't remove makeup or sunscreen normally without a bit of extra physical exfoliation. The oil doesn't require any extra tugging of the skin. Exfoliation isn't inherent to the process. I'm not sure where you got that from.

I completely agree that 'working on your skin's issues' is more important than covering up imperfections with long-wear foundation/concealer. Ironically, cleansing thoroughly, which could sometimes mean cleansing twice with the same good-quality cleanser (again, not all cleansers are created equally) has helped me achieve near-perfect skin. :) Many people believe that double cleansing means using two cleansers. Not true. It could mean using the same cleanser twice if you find that not everything came off in the first go. I always spend a minute massaging my face gently but thoroughly with my oily/balmy cleanser. And you can always skip the washcloth and emulsify the oily cleanser to reduce friction on the skin. :)

My current routine is as follows: on the days when I wear makeup, I use oil remover to remove makeup, followed by cleansing gel (which I also use in the morning) and then toner. On non-makeup days, I only use cleansing gel twice a day. Is it ok or should I change my routine? Forgot to mention: I have a combination skin: oily T-zone and normal to slightly dehydrated on the cheeks.

This video is not only helpful but also refreshing. Finally a youtube channel that combines beauty with advice that is based on science rather than what companies would like to have us believe. A few months ago everyone was swearing that the only way to have nice skin was to do the 'hot cloth' cleansing method with either creams, balms or oils! There is so much wrong with the hot cloth method, especially when combined with really hot water and balms infused with irritating essential oils that I don't even want to go there. I tried it for myself and can say it's one more of those trends based in tales rather than evidence to make women go and spend £40 on a cleanser. Only to end up covered in spots and feeling like an idiot for having fallen for it. LOL. Thank you so much for this.

Great video! Your approach to problem skin seems to be very similar to that of my dermatology professor here at uni in Belgium; probably because you both actually have a deep understanding of skin and all the processes involved. :) I'm so happy to see some logical and evidence-based skin advice here on the internet, there is so much harmful and sponsored rubbish floating around... Glad to see someone who's actually qualified giving people advice about such an important topic like skin that brings heartache to so many x love from a med student!

Double Cleanse: Is Strictly Cleaning off makeup, sunscreen and stubborn mascara/eyeliner. (Air pollutants)There’s no absolute exfoliant. It’s cleanse with oil and gentle cleanser that can be used strictly with your hands that’s it. I have rosacea and I double cleanse every evening it has helped me skin from breaks outs and etc.. and gentle cleanser. No need for wash clothes or sponges.

My skin it’s extremely sensitive and double cleansing saved my skin from being extremely congested all the time, also Asian sunscreens, specially Japanese, are really resistant to water, so you need double cleanse to cleanse your skin because only the facial foam won’t remove the sunscreen as well as the oil cleanser does. I don’t use makeup, when I do, it’s just B.B. cream or a light foundation, so I don’t double cleanse because of that, but because it removes my blackheads pretty well. When I used to only wash my face with facial wash, I had the worst skin, so double cleansing changed my skin and it’s not perfect but it’s A LOT better. My skin is extremely sensitive and I can’t even use a normal foamy face wash, so a scrub is definitely a no no, I don’t know where that came from, Asian skincare is really gentle on the skin.

I like the simplicity of the advice but I have recently started double cleansing in KBeauty way of it being gentle and treating skin gently. First Oil cleanser with drawing and moisturising oils (rather than makeup remover) and then a gentle ph skin friendly cleanser like Avene Dermo-Cleansing Milk. No exfoliation tool or anything. I can see that would be too much to do all the time, though I don't seem to have sensitive skin. So just gentle massage with fingers and splash off with water and use a face washer. I guess not absolutely necessary but with sunscreen and mascara the oil cleanser removes that (rather than a makeup remover) and then gentle milk cleanser to finish it off. It has helped.

I actually use two oil based cleansers to double cleanse. Not even for the sake of removal, but just because it feels nice. I'll use an eye makeup remover, then go in with a cleanser than emulsifies with water and rinses away cleanly down the drain. Then, a more emollient, luxurious feeling/smelling cleanser and massage it in and take my time because it relaxes me so much. Then, I'll go in with a really soft microfiber cloth wet with warm water. I find muslin scratchy and irritating. My skin is pretty balanced and normal. Not oily, or dry, or sensitive- just soft, smooth, and clear with the odd blemish. That's only at night. In the morning, I just use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser.

I am a little confused, and want to be clear. Are you for double cleansing or are you not? I personally am for the double cleansing method, but not as a means of exfoliation by any means. I don't wear make up very often, but I do slather on the SPF like it's cake badder every day. I think that cleansing tools like the clarisonic, lumi, etc. are completely unnecessary, and I don't use the Muslims cloth/towel for scrubbing. To me, the the first cleanse is with an oil to remove the make-up and/or sunscreen, and then go in a second time to clean the skin underneath. Again, both are very gentle and nothing is used for exfoliation. That is completely separate. I do like your advice on taking your time and making sure to use tepid water.

Devon Pfeifer Same here, Devon and I honestly think that with all that SPF we slather on our faces every day, we would SO get problematic skin, if we just cleansed our faces once at night... a gentle double cleanse is, in my opinion, absolutely necessary, if you put on the right amount of SPF (which is TONS - and of course reapply!;) during the day.
@bbappzz98

if you're using an appropriate cleanser it shouldn't be an issue for someone who only uses spf. surfactants in cleansers are hydrophilic and lipophilic (water and oil loving) so they remove both water and oil from your face. you don't need an oil to remove spf, that's misinformation. double cleanse is entirely unnecessary in this case.

I use Bioderma to remove the surface & eye makeup (just 2 swipes) and an oil-based cleanser to remove the nitty gritty and cleanse the skin. The biggest contribution to the health of my skin has been making sure that the skin cleanser has a ph of below a 5. The oil-based cleanser is probably enough to remove makeup, but it is too expensive for me to use in sufficient quantities to do so.

The double cleasing trend as I understood it comes from Asia or Korea. The products used there are much more gentle than western products. I heard of girls in Germany trying this double cleasing with German products suffering from extremely dry and sensitive skin. I tried it with sulfate, mineral oil and paraben free products followed by the moisture layering technique Koreans use and my skin was never feeling so well. I think it's the gentle products and the following moisturizing steps that have to go hand in hand. Average western cleansing products are not made for it. My opinion 😊

If i have makeup on i`ll double cleanse (bioderma sensibio h20 + cetaphil cleanser). If i don`t have makeup i only use the cleanser. Usually i shower my face because i hate the feeling of cleanser left in my hair line. If you use a good micelar water (the one from biorderma really melts the foundation off) you don`t need to rub your face and damage it. I usually soak the cotton sponge and gently tap it on my face (i literally make my face wet with micelar water) and then with another soaked one i remove the foundation. This works for really long wearing foundation. Some of us work with people (8-10 hrs a day) and can`t afford to have those breakouts at surface. I really don`t see the problem with long wearing / high coverage foundations when for example i use the same technique to remove foundation either it`s hardcore coverage or just a bb cream. L.E. And i always take foundation off my face before i wash my face because i use warm water (not hot!) and that opens up my pores. Sometimes i steam my face and them i apply my treatments for acne. Now, why would i want to mix water, cleanser, oils on my opened up pores? People, do what`s best for you. For example, my dermatologist said i should only use benzoyl peroxide to spot treat, not on the whole face. And that was so wrong to do.

I kind of agree with you, but I also think that people double cleanse wrong. There's a limit to the amount of exofiliation you can do, specially a physical one. If done gently double cleanse can garantee a clean skin and performing so you can have more freedom with the make-up you choose. As you said, even though that I have a good skin, I still want water proof mascara and liner. Unfortunatly, dedicated eye make-up removers seems to be the one thing that agravates my eczema in that area. Double cleansing works fine for me though. I believe the key is gently.

I think, the popular use of long wear and full coverage foundation... at least here in the US... is due to the “obsession” with “flawless skin.” Women here, are bombarded with airbrushed images of beauty and they assume that this is how they should also look. - I have oily skin with mild to moderate rosacea. For the first few years after the rosacea diagnosis, I did also wear a lot of “coverage” products - color corrector, thick concealer, heavy foundation AND powder - to cover the rosacea and get a more “flawless” face. This caused a lot more problems... and the “fixes” of more coverage, turned into a vicious cycle. All that changed when I started working on the actual underlying problem of oily skin and rosacea. I also switched from heavy coverage, to a more light to medium coverage. Now, I only wear tinted moisturizer (with SPF30), a bit of under eye concealer and a very light layer of powder foundation. (I also wear a layer of regular SPF30 under all of that.) Now, I have FAR LESS issues with rosacea and oiliness. Removal is easy, too. I kind of do a “mild” version of a double cleanse, though. First, I use a few makeup wipes (Clinique’s Take The Day Off) to gently swipe across my face, to remove all of my makeup. (This also helps remove anything around the hairline and crevices of the face.) Once I see no more color on a wipe... I come in with water and a non-foaming cleansers... and just my hands.

The It CC cream is so nice at first but doesn't set up and smears all over unless you powder which I thinks ages me, 58 years. Now trying the Born That Way and it is fuller coverage. It's hard to even out this Irish skin with sun damage,lol.

I don't know what to think/do anymore. My skin is very sensitive and gets irritated just from the water and the rubbing motions, even if the cleanser is gentle. Double cleansing only exaggerates this. I seem to be doing okay using plain micellar water that I quickly wash off, I appear to be getting less reactions this way. I really like your philosophy on skincare. My skin is so sensitive that I didn't used to use any skincare because it would break me out, I had found suitable products but I then suffered from a somewhat mild hormonal acne. Right now the HA is under control but my skin is so full of tiny imperfections and bad texture + that damn sensitivity. The imperfections disappear when I don't use skincare.

I do double cleanse but not like that. using oil with a brush plus a micro exfoliating cleanser is too much. I use a gentle natural oil and my hands in circles to loosen makeup. I do wear higher coverage makeup to cover malasma. I use a soft cloth to wipe away the oil. then I use a gentle cleanser to cleanse the skin. I use a silicone vibrating massager brush to gently exfoliate. and I shower directly after to maker sure I rinse well. I don't have issue with skin texture, blemishes, etc. I use a good amount of heavy duty spf in water proof formula and find that, along with the higher coverage makeup, I need oils to remove all traces of product. I also have dry skin. I use abh and skin acids to exfoliate twice a week, along with hydrating masks. and while my skin has uneven discoloration, I have less problems with my skin now at 46 then at any time in my life.

I have vitiligo and ive tried EVERYTHING in this world to try and cure this problem. But since none of those worked i got into make up and heavy duty make up. And wearing make up was all good until now i start to break out. My skin in sensitive and dry and putting the cake on and off everyday is a struggle! AS MUCH AS I LOVEEE MAKEUP!, i wish i could go lighter on the make up and i cant. And its funny to see other people take their skin for granted and ruin in all the cAke that they dont need. And this is why i i double cleanse EVERYDAY and regardless i still break out the next morning when i put that foundation on.

Nussaiba Iftekhar I have vitiligo also. I'm 35 now and have dealt with it since I was a baby. My patches come and go over years but I have a few that have remained. I have found that the areas affected by vitiligo are sensitive and very dry. I used glycol cleansers to remove the flakes and extra heavy moisturizers for hydration. I actually have gotten rid of my vitiligo by applying steroid ointment given by my dermatologist and with UV treatment. My color came back fast! Also, whenever a new patch appears I apply my steroid cream immediately to stop to patch from spreading. I'm not a doctor and I'm just speaking from experience. I know the pain of vitiligo and I like to help others whom struggle with it also.

I tried double cleanse, for me it wasn’t a kind idea for my skin. Relieved to hear it’s not the best thing to do for your skins health! Totally agree with this doctors evidentiary knowledge. Remove eye makeup with one product and then wash your face. Follow with skincare of your selected products follow up with moisturizer & in daytime, SPF. Geese, done.

I was confused when I first heard about double cleansing because I thought washing your face twice overkill lol. Then I found out what it was & realized I had always done it since I've always worn wp eye makeup & used either baby oil or eye makeup remover first, then a cleanser to wash my face( which has changed with each decade since being a teenager) Now I use a makeup removing balm since I wear sunscreen & rinse with water then go in with a non foaming cleanser. In the morning I dont use a cleanser at all, just a warm bamboo cloth.

What you recommend contradicts dr. Dray so much. she says that putting tretinoin or retin a or active ingredients over your moisturizer doesn't decrease penetration. Also she recommends a double cleanse. I like her recommendations a lot better.

What is your opinion on double cleansing with an oil cleanser and then following with a ph balanced non foaming cleanser? I find physical sunscreens difficult to remove with solely the cleanser without the added help of that oil based remover first.

double cleansing has to involve oil cleanser, that's what double cleansing is. First you have to use an oil cleanser and then your regular facial cleanser.

I wear nothing but physical SPFs (including water resistant) on my face & there ARE cleansers that can remove it very well, so rather than double cleansing you may want to check out a different cleanser. And/ or perhaps a different SPF (still mineral), as certain formulations are heavier & very much harder to remove. One of my faves is Paula's Choice Skin Recovery, a cream cleanser that is very gentle & effective; its best for normal to drier skin but they have options for other skin types as well. There are also some oil-based cleansers that can be used w/out an additional cleanse afterward; I like one from Julep called "Bare Face", though it unfortunately does have a bit of citrus oil which is not ideal. Others I like quite a bit - and that remove my mineral SPF 30-40 & all but my mascara - are by First Aid Beauty & Pacifica.

Annabaid It seems like the issue she has is with the roughness and over cleansing of the skin. An oil cleanser that emulsifies followed by a gentle cleanser is the most gentle way I've found to clean my skin. You could try a different sunscreen as someone else suggested, but that's the #1 thing we're doing to prevent aging so why would you want to try something that is less tenacious?

I agree with Dr. Sam. My Dear Mom was 81 when she died. The lady hardly any wrinkles. Additionally, my Dear Mom did the minimum to her skin her entire adult life, which, by the way, was lovely, despite being seriously ill when she died. On the other hand, I used very expensive products, and a lot of them, and *still* have some issues. More products on the skin are not necessarily better, and, using products one doesn't need can be counter-productive.

Hi ! Thanks for all the useful videos, I have just recently started to watch your channel and enjoy it very much :) I am a bit confused about this one -- as much as I like the idea of just doing a single-step cleansing, which is what I've been doing most of my life, I have gone into double-cleansing a few months ago after reading that a gentle, water-based cleanser is not enough to remove sunscreen or foundation. I don't wear foundation, but I do wear sunscreen and use zinc-oxide based tinted moisturizers, so I'm afraid the gentle cleanser (e.g. Cetaphil) wouldn't be enough to thoroughly remove it. What do you think of the reasoning that because most sunscreens are oil-based, you need an oil-based cleanser to remove them? And what about the other's viewer's suggestion (using micellar water first to remove sunscreen/makeup, then using a gentle cleanser)? Thanks!

I wear mineral SPF daily & while many do not, there ARE cleansers of various types (cream, gel, oil-based) that CAN indeed fully remove mineral SPF; its all about finding the right one!! And if you prefer an oil cleanser there are some that work well on their own & do not require or invite a secondary step after use. I'm happy to mention some than work well but want them to be relevant & accessible to you; what is your skin type & where are you located (country)?

Toleriane by La Roche Posay and Cetaphil seem to be popular options for gentle cleansers but I am not sure how well they remove SPF. Eli Rodriguez this is an absolute nonsense, a good quality cleanser, used properly, is more than capable of removing sunscreen, even mineral one. Sunscreens are water resistant, not water proof and cleansers are based on surfactants, that are overall perfectly capable of breaking them up. Google how surfactants work, you might be surprised.

I’ve done double cleansing in the past, mainly because nothing removes make-up as well as oils do! And I almost don’t wear make-up at all: just a little bit of concealer and mascara. But I hated using a separate eye makeup remover because it took a lot of time and effort to remove mascara, I manipoulated the eye area so much for waking up the next day and discover that I didn’t remove it completely. Now I still use an oil based cleanser at night, but I’ve found one wich doesn’t leave any residue behind, so I just use that as my cleanser. Do you think I’m doing it wrong?

Oil-based cleansing may be all the rage with vloggers but is controversial among dermatologists, with some recommending it and others not (or only for dry skin). I guess it doesn't help that the research into 'comedogenic ratings' is patchy and decades old, usually sadly involving small furry animals. Rabbits and guinea pigs don't suffer with acne and are therefore extremely poor models for such research. I think that Dr Sam and other leading derms should begin a new programme of research into the effects of oils and common cosmetic ingredients on various human skin types, e.g. sensitive / acne prone / suffering with active acne / or skin which has been successfully cleared of acne, as well as dry / normal / combination. Personally, since starting on Differin (applied at night before bed, as directed), I've found oil-cleansing the following morning to be a lifeline for alleviating the associated retinoic dryness. I use a gentle cleanser from Lush called "Ultrabland" which has a simple ingredients list without added colour, fragrance or 'fillers'. It's just Almond Oil, Rosewater, Beeswax, Honey, Iris Extract, Glycerine, Rose Absolute, Tincture of Benzoin and a couple of preservatives. The honey is supposed to be antibacterial while the beeswax and glycerine lock in moisture provided by the almond oil (a rich source of skin-replenishing components, including triglycerides and several fatty acids) and protect the skin's natural barrier. The other ingredients are said to calm sensitive or easily irritated skin. It works for me - moisturises without clogging or causing spots and calms the mild rosacea on my cheeks. It also gives me a plump, healthy 'glow'. I wipe it off gently with one of those PVA face flannels which dry hard to prevent formation of bacteria (Body Shop). I find this gentler than a muslin cloth, it literally glides over the skin when wet with warm water - no pressure, tugging or scrubbing. When oil-cleansing I find that I don't need to use a separate moisturiser, as the slight residue it leaves on my skin makes a good base for my mineral sunscreen and tinted moisturiser. Normally I stay clear of anything from Lush as they load their products with synthetic fragrance and pungent essential oils, but this one seems very mild. Even the two rose ingredients don't give off a discernible smell. Reviews are generally positive among acne and sensitive skin sufferers (for me, the two conditions go hand-in-hand, as I'm sure they do for many others). At night I use a mild foaming aloe vera cleanser to ensure that nothing is left on my skin that would impede the absorption of Differin. I suppose what I do is a "kind of" double cleansing, but with the second cleanse some twelve hours after the first and no toner on either occasion. Therefore, hopefully, I'm not overexerting my delicate skin. However, I do sometimes need to scrub my nose and forehead with a proper terry-cloth flannel as I get some flakes in those places which the rubber flannel won't shift. I avoid facial scrub products, though, as I know they can be harsh on the skin. Through trial and error, I've come to the conclusion that not all non-fragrant oils are bad for my skin, any more than all fats are bad for my body. However, I agree that essential oils, in their pure form, are aggravating and far from "essential". If I use a little tea tree or rose oil now and then, I make sure to dilute it and only use a small amount via spraying.

Double cleansing really is not new, historically after more makeup became popular, women used a cold cream, which is oil based, to remove make up and followed with soap and water if they did not want the oil residue. I started using an almond/grapeseed oil based cold cream, massaged in and wiped off with a warm washcloth, to remove makeup. Followed with a gentle cleanser and my regular BHA treatment gel. It takes less than 5 minutes. In the mornings I just use that same gentle cleanser followed with sunscreen, that takes about 2 minutes. My skin has never looked better than it does now, I had gone 20 years trying different cleansers with or without makeup removers and my skin always looked kind of dull.

Before doing double cleansing my skin was an absolute mess. After a month of starting double cleansing most of my breakouts had stopped and my skin looked better than it had been in years. I think whether double cleansing is a suitable practice is dependent on the person's living circumstances.

Hi Dr.Sam, Thank you for the very informative video! I had not heard of double cleansing until recently, it makes sense on one hand but also sounds like a gimmicky fad on the other. I'm 54 and fortunate to have good skin which is normal to combination during the warmer months. I'm looking for a good cleanser suggestion? Also, do you think it is important to spend money on a good cleanser or splurge on the anti aging products ( Retin A, Vit. C, etc)?
@Mel-pb5xw
@Mel-pb5xw 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not Dr. Sam so hope you don't mind me chiming in. While you need a good cleanser, there are good options at pretty much every price point, & in the end all you need it to do is effectively cleanse w/out being too harsh or doing harm (disrupting the acid mantle, etc) so there is no reason to pay for a cleanser full of antioxidants, acids, etc that won't be on your skin long enough to have any meaningful impact & will largely be washed down the drain. All of which is to say that it is MUCH better to put most of your skincare budget toward products that will stay on your face, such as antioxidant-rich serums, chemical exfoliants, etc. And yet even then it is important to realize that more expensive is not necessarily better; its all about the ingredients & formulation NOT the brand or marketing). Hope that helps! P.S. Let me know what country you're in & I'll try to offer a few budget-friendly options. I have the most for the US but do have a few for the UK & elsewhere in Europe.
