I have never watched any of your videos before today and want to say what a fan of yours I have become. Your video on drapery was the most informative, educational and inspiring I have seen. A per peeve of mine is drapery that has pooled on the floor. Does anyone realize how dangerous it can be if someone's shoe get's caught in the fabric? Having the panel a fraction of an inch above the floor is beautiful and much more practical. I agree with your comments and have felt this way for many years. I don't see why more professionals don't stress this fact.

One thing to consider is that one well-dressed window can rival the cost of your sofa. And it will need to be taken down and professionally cleaned at least once a year.

I was taught to avoid using "drapes" or "drapery," and to instead use "curtains." I often default to "panels" because I am afraid "curtains" confuses people who beleive whatever they read on the internet. Language does change but my English professors would be turning in their respective graves if I used "drapes" or even "drapery."

Thanks! Love the details. That thermal lining could be used here in FL. I have one room that has a thermal lining since it gets flooded with sunlight. Even with A/C, the sun can heat up a room something fierce. To help keep cooling costs down, linings make a difference. That's my experience anyway. Great informative video as always!

Your advice is excellent. My mother made wedding gowns professionally for a major NYC department store and taught me to sew. I made drapery. Beautiful drapery, if I do say so myself. When I sold my two previous homes, the new owners were so impressed with the custom drapes, they kept them and designed around them. One woman referred to them as the “crowning glory of the room”.

@@LisaHoltDesign - thank you fir your gracious reply. My mom instilled in me to sew neatly. Her gowns were so perfectly sewn, they could be worn inside out. My drapery was the same. As soon as you tell someone you “made the drapes” they immediately pick up the hem portion and turn it over. My drapery could be hung reversed, it was that neatly finished. My linings were matched perfectly. I particularly liked “puddling” because it was much easier than measuring for a precise length. Some fabrics stretch from being hung, so you must allow for that adjustment. Mom never used a pattern, she was schooled in draping the fabric. I’m not that good, in sewing clothing, I need a pattern. The key to fabulous results is fabulous fabric. In NYC we’d get gorgeous material. It’s difficult in other areas. On line you can get beautiful fabric, but I like to feel it, hold it, see how it falls. You can’t do that over the Internet, even with a sample. I love your channel. Hopefully you will inspire a new generation of sewing enthusiasts.

This video came at a perfect time as I'm now onto selecting draperies after I battled my painting dilemma. After painting some walls matte black in my rental, it looked great with some of my Restoration Hardware furniture that was also in a matte black finish. But something didnt feel quite right. After watching your video I relaized some of the mistakes I was making. Too many metals. I had chrome, wrought iron pieces and gold going on. I couldn't figure out how my former apartment with the same pieces now felt so out of place. Then your advice shed some light. Aside from too many metals, I realized the architectural feel was now a traditional backdrop in my 1920' s frech electic rental and not a new modern loft with concrete floors. I also had no framed pieces on the wall then and the walls and ceiling were matte white. The only gold were two gilded thai buddahs . I set forth and removed all the framed pieces and knew the black walls, despite how cool they looked, it needed to be floor and ceiling, and as much as I liked the looked, I prefered the minimalistic white walls. I customed matched the orginal paint but cooled it down to pair better with all the black; painting from floor and the ceiling. It worked!! I now have the modern minimal vibe from the apartment in my rental. I opted for 96" brushed cotton twill panels from RH, hoping this will provide some relief from all the sun but still feel modern and clean. So thank you 😊 for these amazing videos. I watched your video on rugs but how to choose the right shade of grey, is that something of a personal choice or are there tips in selecting the right one. I see a lot of rooms with all white walls and furniture like mine, but most are using light to medium solid grey rugs. I found a knotted wool rug thats more charcoal but worried it may weigh the room down with me ending up loosing that airy feel.

I’m an interior designer & learning window treatments was an uphill battle! I would love to see you do a show on how to treat different sizes and shapes of windows, especially when they occur in the same space. I frequently have clients with a bay window, a slider & those annoying 22” square windows- all in the same space & have to come up with a cohesive look that functions differently for all the windows!

Even the best shutters made will have light gaps. Interior mount (within the window well) not as many as exterior mount (on the molding or creating a molding in the construction of the shutter). They are most complicated to install and a professional measure and installation by the same person is going to be the best fit.

Thanks, Lisa. I'm saving this for when my son & daughter-in-law purchase their first home. Whilst renting, they haven't bothered to reflect on the impact all those details make to the finish of a room. Hubby & I have been living in our newly built home for almost 2 years and still haven't put up permanent drapery in any of the rooms! We have recently installed neutral honeycomb blinds but I am yet to convince him that hanging curtains close to the ceiling is the way to go :(

I’m great at choosing drapes. Hanging them up without a lot of swearing and extra holes in the walls is another story! Also....the baseboard heaters in my home are a pain. I added snaps to mine and just have shorter curtains in winter. I don’t love it but.....it’s safe and it works ok.

Oh Boy! I've been waiting for this one! I'm considering making drapery panels (need 4.5 yds per panel ... yikes!) and want a nice linen fabric, not too heavy, and unlined ...something off-warmish cream, not start white, and maybe, maybe touched with a little hemp-like light neutral for a quiet and neutral look.

Thanks, Lisa. I think if you have a great view, lovely window frames & there are no privacy issues, you don’t need any window treatments at all! However, for most of us, drapes are a consideration so there’s lots of things to think about as pointed out in your excellent video. Unfortunately, as a lot of them are expensive to maintain with dry cleaning bills etc & fashions change, I prefer to keep them as simple as possible.
