It’s insane that I’m a ramp agent and I made $75,000 last year. I make more than guys flying for the regionals. Low hour pilots have to be the most underpaid people on earth.

The "overly cocky" types are the ones I would most likely find the hardest to deal with. I have TONS of patience. So if a student is having a real difficult time "getting it", I would have no trouble at all helping them out, as long as they are humble and willing to learn!!

Great job Ryan. This is so important. Make sure you want to be a CFI. Not everyone that is a good pilot will make a good Flight instructor. You must not only have a high aeronautical IQ, but be willing to teach and articulate that to various students..young and old. Ive been in the industry since I was 10 yrs old and been through several flight instructors. Most of them were really good and loved to teach aviation...but..there were others that have no business teaching. Its one thing to build flight time towards Airlines by having someone else pay for it...however....if the student is not truly learning anything, than whats the point.

Hey Ryan, I did my training out of Arlington, TX (KGKY). Here is another route that I took, decided to opt of of Jacksonville. After completion had a whopping 201 hours, took me about a year before I was able to land my first job with such low hours, was able to land one in my home town working as a jump pilot for our local Drop Zone... Flying jumpers earns you a PhD in parasitic drag.. having 3-4 guys hanging off your wing just slightly above stall.. really learn the stick and rudder skills. During my stay there I marketed myself out as a co-pilot for hire. Sat right seat in the King Air 90 and 200's, was able to gain another client flying his cirrus around.. then another flying a TBM.. so on and so fourth... When I first started flight training ATP really emphasis that airlines are the only way to go, airlines or bust.. How ever I wouldn't trade my current work schedule for nothing.. Home 95% of the time, I'm able to wear shorts and flip flops to work (sharpest dressed man inside Signature), flying jumpers on the weekend, making the occasional jump myself. Just another route that can be taken. I chose corporate over airlines and wouldn't look back.

Very nice. I am 59 with 1300 hours single engine land instrument rated. I am considering teaching for a few years. Right now is a good time to be a pilot. I have opportunities all over the place even with airlines!!! Thank you Capt.!

In my career as a CFI..my primary goal was to make safe pilots...and have them pass on first time. Money wasn't an issue as I had a job to pay living expenses. Be available on weekends and being flexible Yes things have changed...when I started pay was 5 bucks a flight hr! My job satisfaction was my students passing their flight checks satisfactory first time...I sent applicants to the feds as well as independent pilot examiner's.all was good

Great advice. I like all what you've said on this.

I learned that becoming a pilot is an apprenticeship program. You start at the bottom as do most construction workers. You advance by acquiring time and knowledge of the job. There are very few shortcuts if any. You have to pay you dues if you want a successful aviation career. Once you accept that fact, you are on your way to success! Good luck all aspiring pilots!

That's one view....I never looked at the CFI job like he does....the airline job was never what I hoped it would be.my passion was turning out safe knowledgeable pilots who passed their chk rides first time around! That was my motivation...I never put a charter before a student.and the flight time.im not active anymore for med reasons,but fondest memories in aviation were my instructor days

Cool video. I live out in phoenix, and just got my 3rd class medical certificate. The hard part now is trying to afford flight school to get my PPL :( I actually wouldn't mind being a CFI as career. I might have to create a "Go Fund Me" account...I know their are Flight Training financing programs out there, but I have too many student loans out, vehicle loans etc. I need to think of something...

It would seem difficult going to the right seat. Now the throttle is in your left hand and the yoke in your right. I’d be scared of accidentally pulling the yoke thinking it’s the throttle. Like trying to drive a right seated car on European streets.

I'm hearing from airlines pilots giving their 2 cents that in order to be considered for the airlines, any airline, you need a minimum of 3,000 flying hours and a 4-year degree will get you in the preferred pile of the interviews/resumes. Another obstacle is getting your 1,000 (Pilot In Charge) PIC hours, but I suppose that can be done through Regional airlines. To top it off, the major airlines are not in desperate need of pilots, far from it.

70 degrees in Phoenix everyday...July highs never got below 110 this year, and a couple weeks ago the highs were in the 40s. I feel like someone is exaggerating a bit. Regardless, Phoenix does have great flying weather, albeit a little hot for planes with no A/C.

My guys all charge $80/hour, there are some that are $100/hr. I guess it's cheaper in AZ.

Im FI in europe, the sad other truth is that the most hours you get the least you will get hired as airlines pilot. In europe, they hire young cadets that only know how to push buttons. At least in USA , experience under the belt is always taken into consideration. If I knew that I would move to US before starting my career path here! In europe you teach young pilots, then they will fly in the right seat before you.. Shame. and not logic!
