The phrasing "supports" has to do with the fact that alternative medicine products are legally not allowed to make certain health claims anymore. But phrasing it in this way ís allowed. I live in the Netherlands so not sure about the law for American products, but here that is the reason for using the word "support" a lot when supplements make certain health claims. Keep up the good content, love the down to earth objectiveness 😉

Claudia Kerssemakers Great point. I often see the phrases ‘may assist with...’ or ‘aids with’ on supplements too. These are indeed based on therapeutic guidelines for the advertising of prescription and non-prescription substances, different for each country/region. We have similar regulatory guidelines here in AUS. You’ll also often the the markers ‘AUST R’ or ‘AUST L’ on bottles/boxes here. The R indicates medicines assessed for safety, quality and effectiveness (ie. they do what they say they do as substantiated by evidenced-based, peer reviewed research). The L indicates low risk ingredients that are assessed for safety and quality, but not effectiveness (ie not a strong body of evidence to determine they absolutely will have the desired effects, but they aren’t harmful either, if taken as indicated). I wonder if other countries have similar labelling requirements?

In American corporations it is called "Health Supportive Safe" language to avoid lawsuits. Supplements must not be sold with a drug action, so make any claims to cure, treat, or prevent, otherwise they go through FDA testing and likely will fail.

The word “support” is used by all companies because the FDA would shut them down quick if they used words like “heal” or “fix”. “Support” is the legal safe way to make claims.

Marie Johnson Just as a side note, you should probably not start a supplement if you are breastfeeding unless you find a claim that specifically states it safe for breastfeeding. Something's are safe for both the baby and mother to take orally, but dangerous for the baby if the mother takes while she is breastfeeding. Codeine is a good example of this. It's safe for both a baby and a mother to take orally, but it's not safe for a mother to breastfeed her baby while taking codeine. That's because codeine is not a drug, it's a prodrug, so it's the body that metabolizes codeine into the drug (morphine) which can then be passed to the baby in its drug form in the milk.

I'd would love to see an in depth video on probiotic drinks and supplements in general and for her to shed light on existing research on human microbiota. On the one hand, microbiomes are super fascinating. The very fact that we are hosts to vast unique, complex ecosystems with whom we depend on for immunologic, hormonal and metabolic homeostasis is as intriguing as it is humbling and since we still have so much to uncover in terms of identifying all these billions of bacteria and the roles they play, it makes for an exciting and relatively new area of medical research. On the other hand, products containing a couple of dozen different probiotic strains get touted as these wonderous cure-alls for everyone with very little scientific substantiation. People are going so far as to give themselves at home D.I.Y. fecal transplants in the hopes of curing everything from halitosis to autism to cancer.

Teaccino and black teas are typically ok with my tummy and can be mixed with creamer the same way you'd do with coffee but i also really like matcha for flavor and the fact that the caff is lower and it has other stuff in it that keeps you relaxed so no jitters. Also sometimes i find that decaf coffee with a little bit of regular coffee is fine for me in like a 3 to 1 ratio. I don't need much if any caf to function so it's more for when i really need an energy boost. You might have an easier time with teas ^_^

Fun fact! The increase in acid during exercise actually isn't due to lactic acid production; its due to the rapid ATP turnover (which gives off one proton per ATP burned) caused by muscle contraction. Its a prevailing myth (even among doctors) that lactic acid is the cause of this, when at physiological pH, lactate is deprotonated, so its basic rather than acidic. I learned this in my biochemistry class this semester, and I figured I'd let you know since you love debunking incorrect "science" ;) (source is Berg, Tymoczko, and Stryer biochemistry textbook, if you're interested in a read!)

I think you're wrong. Regardless of whether lactic acid is predominantly in the form of lactic acid or lactate, the generation of lactate tends to acidify the medium since the pKa of lactic acid (pKa1 = 3.86 in aqueous solution) is much lower than the pKa of its substrate glucose/glycogen (pKa ≈ 12) (i.e., at any pH within physiological range the ratio of dissociated lactate to lactic acid is much greater than the ratio of deprotonated glucose to glucose). That's why the yogurt ferments turn milk (or whatever substrate you give them to ferment) into a more acidic product. The sugars (e.g., lactose) are taken from the medium to become substrates for glycolysis, and the resulting pyruvate + H+/pyruvic acid is turned into lactate + H+/lactic acid and pumped out of the cell (or released into the medium by diffusion): Glc + 2 ADP + 2 Pi ⟶ 2 HLac + 2 ATP + 2 H20 (glucose fermentation) 2 ATP + 2 H2O ⟶ 2 ADP + 2 Pi (muscle contraction) 2 HLac ⇋ 2 Lac- + 2 H+ (medium acidification) There isn't that much ATP stored in the muscles. After a couple of seconds or less, the consumption of ATP + Creatine-P will be compensated by the net synthesis of ATP from glycolysis. Otherwise, you'd run out of ATP + Creatine-P. Once the stationary state is reached, the primary source of acidifying products is the buildup of lactate (in anaerobic conditions, without the generation of lactate you would run out of NAD+ so glycolysis couldn't proceed any longer): Glc + 2 NAD+ + 2 ADP + 2 Pi ⟶ 2 Pyr- + 2 H+ + 2 NADH + 2 H+ + 2 ATP + 2 H2O 2 Pyr- + 2 NADH + 2 H+ ⟶ 2 Lac- + 2 NAD+ (in the muscle) A different story is whether the burning sensation that you feel in your muscles is the result of the acidification of the muscles, and whether other processes may be also contributing to the muscle acidification. ATP turnover isn't one of them.
@marujitadiaz9019
@marujitadiaz9019 5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you mean during AEROBIC exercise, when there's little generation of lactate (because the end products of glycolysis and fatty acids become fully oxidised in the mitochondrion) and the ATP/ADP ratio may be kept shifted relative to resting conditions.
@danceguardmusicgirl1
@danceguardmusicgirl1 5 жыл бұрын
@@marujitadiaz9019 essentially what you're claiming though is that glucose/lactate is an acid/base reaction, while its a straight conversion. Glucose (pKa around 15) --> lactate (pKa around 4) involves the loss of an H+ in the form of inorganic phosphate (tribasic phosphate to dibasic phosphate). You're arguing about the pKa of lactic acid, but at cellular pH it is lactate, not its conjugate acid. "Tends to acidify the medium" doesn't hold up because the surrounding phosphate buffers the increase in H+ concentration. However, when enough ATP is converted to ADP, the concentration of dibasic phosphate is much, much greater, which is ultimately the source of the protons. While you can certainly draw a balanced reaction with no production of a proton in the conversion of glucose to lactate, you're entirely missing the kinetic component. The rate of the degradation of ATP far outpaces the rate of ATP generation, still leaving the free H+. While I do agree that pyr-->lac is necessary in anaerobic conditions, you cannot do long-term anaerobic exercise. The cellular concentrations of creatine-Pi are only roughly double the cellular concentration of ATP, aka, not that much (223 vs 446 mmol). When you're talking about the kind of exercise she's doing (more than a few minute sprint), it's far more likely that she's burning fatty acids, which muscles have a much higher concentration of (roughly 4,000,000 mmols). While it takes longer for this response to kick in, Swayze is talking about a 20-30 minute exercise. I've linked below a great paper that further summarizes this if you'd rather look at the primary literature's explanation rather than my own. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15308499 All the best, I know this is a well-ingrained myth and it is deceptively easy to believe but unfortunately the biochemistry just does not point to lactate as the ultimate source of the increasing proton concentration.

I work in a health food store chain that started with just a suppliment section. When we reccomend vitamins/minerals/herbs to customers we have to use something called "supportive language". For example we can say "melatonin helps support better sleep patterns" but can't say "melatonin will make you sleep better at night". That language is used to avoid sounding like we are prescribing customers medicine. Because we aren't doctors and we are selling vitamins and herbs lol.

For example if a study came out that said that blueberries might help improve the flow of blood in the brain by 0.5%. Well, then I can make a sugar supplement, add a little bit of blueberries in them and say, this is the "Great Memory Pill." Also, if Swayze Unnatural Vegan, checked the back label of these supplements, they would all read "This product has not been evaluated by the FDA and is not to intended to treat, diagnose or cure any disease of any kind."

HEY! 2 things I'd like to share here. 1. I have had a bit of a struggle with my coffee consumption before, although I drank it for years it would give my unpleasant side effects, at the same time it had become a strong habbit so couldn't break lose of it really. Then I heard of Four Sigmatic and gave it a try; for me it really solves the jitteries, stomache problems, and especially the after dip while also giving me a nice and smooth stimulating effect. (hard to say how much of it is due to the mashroom itself) 2. when you sign up to get a monthly pack (can always be cancelled or paused) it is only 16 euros - stillmore than regular coffe, but worth it for me. I am a fan. PS. Thanks for your scientific appraisal

I know next to nothing but I met in person a group of women (mainly older women, mothers and grandmothers) in Argentina who were campaigning against Monsanto because insane amounts of people in their village had health issues they related directly to Monsanto. They wrote a letter to Obama and even got a letter back in which he basically said, "I can't do anything, they are untouchable." This is just my anecdotal first-hand experience. But I tend to be, obviously, very wary of Monsanto (which doesn't mean I'm necesarily anti-GMO). They seem to be a shady over-powerful corporation that have caused substantial ecological and human damage. I hope your investigations are fruitful. Share any stuff you learn. Thanks.

I like your videos. Thanks. After reviewing a wide variety of these food based health videos, I agree with T Colin Campbell when saying that we shouldn't lose the big picture with reductionism, which is the focusing on single food items and single nutrients. We will never understand everything that works except the general patterns of eating. I won't be eating single food items for some specific benefit. Although I'll admit I do make sure I get a fair amount of all the basic nutrients and track it in cronometer, it's overkill and I need to worry less about it, eating a wide variety of whole plant foods of sufficient calories. There's a lot of money being made touting the health benefits of specific food items and of isolated concentrated nutrients like vitamins and other supplements. That said, I do think there's a wide variety of support for eating dark leafy greens daily and eat 5 ounces of spinach daily. Going whole food-plant based, after 4 weeks my total serum cholesterol went from 190 to 131, and then at 17 months at 118. Further, my LDL went from 130 to 65 after 17 months, and my blood pressure is now normal as well as heart rate, off of the Atenolol I was taking. Lowering the serum cholesterol by making the radical change to my diet worked. Although it's not a miracle I get the same feeling as if it were. The risk of heart attack is virtually non-existent with an LDL at 65 and a total of below 140.

As far as her making fun of the companies claims I have to agree because there isn’t enough research to back up anything they claim and they are putting much lower doses in their products than what is used in the few experiments. I don’t doubt that they have good effects on health and the body but those are pretty radical claims. Anyway, I will continue to watch her videos because I enjoy them and I don’t look at her as a scientist or a God but rather just another outlook on things.

I drink it when I'm trying to avoid caffeine wtihout going completely decaf. I do feel clearer and more energized when I drink it and I like that I can sleep better at night drinking this versus regular coffee. Since I frequently go back and forth for weeks at a time between Four Sigmatic and my regular coffee, I can say that I have noticed a difference. That being said, I do agree with you about the price tag. I shop around and usually manage to get it for $32-$35 for a box of 30 packets, which is considerably less that $50 but sill pretty expensive. The price is one of the reasons I don't drink it exclusively, but I do like it and drink it off and on.

@3qazlauren
@3qazlauren 6 жыл бұрын
punkybrewstar83 maybe they could use a coffee of a similar roast to compare to. But then you'd have to figure out the average ph of that roast in other coffees. Then again the acidity concern is kind of ridiculous considering if you are avoiding coffee for its acidity (usually around 4.5 to 5) you also have to keep in mind lemonade and fruit juice and fruit in general is usually more acidic. Also, the presence of caffeine makes the coffee's ph read more basic slightly but makes the stomach produce more acid. The same is also true for milk.

So glad you did this video! Sitting through the BS is so important. I drink the Mushroom “Cacao” hot chocolate mainly just because I like the taste, and I’m definitely never expecting miraculous “results”, it just tastes good lol.

I'm really glad this was recommended to me (even though I'm already subscribed to your channel) considering I had "reishi tea" on my grocery list as a result of watching MissFitAndNerdy talk about it. I appreciate what you do here on youtube and definitely look up to you as I'm hoping to delve much deeper into the science and evidence of health and wellness than the knowledge I have right now, which feels so minimal.

A very important question: are they using mycelia or fruiting body? Most products are using mycelia that is grown on brown rice. Mycelia has very low amounts of Beta Glucans. Beta Glucans is what gives mushrooms their therapeutic power. Fruiting body extracts always list the percentage of Beta Glucans which is usually 16-25%. If a product is not listing it's percentage of beta glucans, you can be sure they are using cheap mycelia. If Four Sigmatic is using 250 mg of Mycelia, it is basically worthless.

I am _that person_ lol, but I found a solution without Four Sigmatic (shocking, I know!) Because of chronic illnesses I won’t bore anyone with the details of, I actually am the kind of person that gets insanely jittery after one cup of coffee (it can set off my anxiety badly too.) I used to get 3-4 extra espresso shots in every drink at one point lol. Then when my anxiety got bad I quit altogether, did just tea, when my health shit kicked in, stopped everything for a good awhile. Ya know how you fix one cup making you really jittery? You drink half a cup. Or, my personal favorite solution, is half a cup, pour in a bunch of simple syrup (raw cane sugar+boil+cool off=yum), and top off the rest with your favorite soy or almond milk (I’m allergic to coconut but that works too) and your favorite creamer. I love sweet stuff lol. Same with tea, minus the creamer, though I can do a lot closer to a full mug of tea. Super yummy, morning energy, no jitters. And hey, I didn’t over $100 a month on something to sip most mornings, so I could have mushrooms in my coffee that’ll “balance my pH,” “support my metabolism,” “produce steady energy levels and double the effect of coffee,” or any other completely unproven shit I’ve never needed my coffee to do for me anyway. 🤦‍♂️Just wanna enjoy my obscene amount of morning sugar with a little bit of coffee sprinkled on top in peace lol.

That’s a really cool solution, way to innovate! It doesn’t sound to me like you’d need to spend 100 bucks a month but the benefits are there. I think there’s more research than unnatural vegan was able to pull up. Based on my experience with the product I don’t think this video is the most accurate portrayal but I definitely respect the effort.

The term Mushroom is used for both Fruiting Body and Mycelia. Fruiting body extracts almost always declare that it is fruiting body and give the percentage of Beta Glucans contained in a dose. Mycelia, which is grown on brown rice and is very cheap, has low beta glucans. Products using Mycelia many times do not disclose that the Mushroom product they are selling is Mycelia and not Fruiting Body Mushrooms. All the important studies used Fruiting Body and/or Fruiting Body Mushroom Extracts. Mycelia products use this research to refer to their own inferior, low beta glucan containing products!

Oh my gosh thank you for talking me back down off that ledge I was on the verge of buying some mushroom coffee! Lol. but I never take into account with the monetary cost really is or how it compares over time to what I'm already doing considering what the benefits are. I mean if I had infinite money sure I would try it out invest in some I'm sure it doesn't hurt it probably even helps a little but does it help enough for me to invest this much in it right now when yes I need to remember there are bigger bills to pay I get caught up in the excitement so I really appreciate consistent reminder of the monetary cost. It seems like cost benefit analysis is all but a lost art these days but you nailed it on this review

Actually, if it were less acidic, the pH would be higher, not lower. A higher pH is more alkaline, but too alkaline is as harmful as too acidic.

I realize this is an older video at this point, but I'm at the part where you mention how they use the word "support" a lot. I watched a video recently on FDA guidelines and such for supplements and products of this nature, and I think legally they aren't allowed to say it "improves" or even "can improve" because there perhaps hasn't been enough medical research yet, or another reason. I can't remember exactly, but I think it was something along these lines :). I appreciate this video of yours so much, thank you!

Some foods like almonds trigger the body to produce less acid. I don't know if mushrooms do but ph of the product does not necessarily dictate how it will effect your bodies ph.

It’s only anecdotal, but having had mushroom coffee from four sigmatic regularly for almost two years I can say I really enjoy it. I have no idea if I’m getting any benefits, but the flavour is great and I don’t get an upset stomach or jitters when I drink it. It’s obviously a luxury product, and if you can’t afford it you shouldn’t be stretching yourself thin to get it, but it’s cheaper for me to make mushroom coffee at home than to go to Starbucks and I end up feeling a lot better 🤷‍♀️
