Guys this is not me asking for your advice or your judgement. This is me just stating why I wouldn't get another GCC. Ya'll tell me I didn't do my research but this is me putting more information out there for people to know what its like and all I get is hate, no wonder nobody talks about this stuff and I came into this unprepared. It would have been nice to know these things before I bought mine to better prepare me mentally. And no, like I said in the video, i'm not planning on getting another bird. And yes I do let him out of his cage, he usually showers with me as-well. Shouldn't we not be another hateful animal group and be a community that supports each other? Wouldn't that be so much better.. the name calling is unnecessary.

1. All birds are really messy 2. All birds are very destructive 3. All birds destroy everything 4. Not all birds can be trained. 5. Don't get a bird because it's cute. 6. If you don't want a bird that doesn't bite sometimes, isn't destructive, isn't extremely messy, and more, just don't get a bird. I want to note that this doesn't just go out to the KZfaqr. This goes out to everyone. Make sure you do research, and make sure that you know what your doing. Bird are a lifetime commitment

The bird’s probably smarter than this girl to be honest. She buys a high maintenance pet and expects not to have to make an effort to teach her bird manners and the skills needed to adapt to a domestic environment. I wouldn’t go along with her half assed attempts at training either.

Most of these "reasons" are basic bird behaviour. GCCs aren't the only bird species that are messy and loud, because all birds do this.

All birds are different. You claim you aren’t asking for advice. People try to give advice to people who aren’t taking good care of their birds. You act like we are being rude, but most of us want to help.

Sorry but the fact you called him dumb completely ruins your point. Birds are only as smart as the time you put into him. If you only had him 10 months and expect him to be this perfect parrot you are wrong. Give it more time and training.

Those are the shittiest reasons of why not to get another GCC. Why not just all together say I won’t get another bird again? They’re not dumb... your training just wasn’t all there and consistent. All birds in general need an insane amount of attention, if you can’t provide that... stay away from them

Honestly, (no hate so don’t be upset), why would you ever get a Caique if you can’t handle a Green Cheek Conure?! 😭 Caiques, for one, are FAR more destructive than Green Cheeks. They are also bigger, moodier, and get bored very easily. Not a good choice

The problems here are handler mistakes, mis management, training issues and misunderstanding behavior.

i came here to see what the pros and cons of a green cheek conure was and all i got is why you shouldn't get a bird, if you don't accept the fact that they are messy, they bite, they are noisy, etc, you shouldn't get a bird at all, because they are ALL of those things. it may depend on the bird, but as someone who has had birds before, i can confirm you will get bit, you will experience the mess, and your eardrums will get blown out, and if you don't want any of that? don't get a bird!

if everybody else’s conure is doing great and urs isn’t... i think u can clearly see where the problem is. there’s nothing wrong with just not liking the breed. but theres everything wrong with spreading misinformation and blaming the birds when he’s really not the problem. and before u say “i’m not spreads misinformation” yes, yes u are. i understand ur specificcally talking about ur own bird, but how u phrased it in the entire video it was like you talking abt every single conure. hope next time ur clear about what exactly ur saying

The fact that you would even suggest that he may just be dumb tells me everything I need to know about this situation. I agree that rehoming him to someone patient with experience is a good idea.

If you post a video like this, then you should expect people to comment. Frankly, it seems to me that you did not do your homework and in my opinion, your bird is only as smart as the person training him. Leaving him in his cage because he is bitey is only going to make that worse. GCC must be socialized and played with everyday, even when you don't feel like it. I think for the birds sake, you should probably find a reputable rehoming bird sanctuary and let them place him with someone who can give him the proper care he needs. I gather you don't provide fresh fruits or veggies because he makes a mess and that's not right either. I feel really sorry for your bird.

Girl DO NOT get a caique!! If you can't handle a green cheek, you should stick with something really mellow like a cockatiel (or no birds at all). Caiques are adorable but can get super grumpy and are capable of hard, painful, bloody bites. All of the points in your video are why you shouldn't get a parrot, period- not just a conure.

If you cannot handle a conure...do not get a caique... Maybe a cocktail or budgie....that's it

A Caique (or as you said, crochet lmao) are considered much more advanced birds. Do not get one if you cannot handle a conure's behaviour. Caiques are MUCH more demanding than a simple green cheek conure

If you can’t handle a conure you can’t handle a caique, what you’re describing is the traits that EVERY bird has, you’re forgetting that it is still an animal they have animal instincts and behaviours. You can’t blame the bird for being “dumb” if you don’t even have the time of day to research and actually find out about bird behaviours and what they need to stay stimulated. I suggest you either rehome him or try to find a different perspective and keep an open mind.

Biting / being territorial : can be trained to not be done. You're not reading body language well, you will get bit. Messy : You didn't do your research. Any parrot/bird is messy. Destructive : You aren't giving him enough entertainment to keep himself busy. Foraging toys etc. are a must for these smart animals. Loves to chew : ^ Exact same as being destructive. Also not enough research. They are birds, they NEED to chew. Potty train : It's not healthy for a bird to be potty trained, this can actually cause illnesses because your bird might stop pooping and only poop when you see it. Failing to train : Sounds like it's an issue on YOUR end, not knowing body language, giving up too soon. Not patient enough. As for your sister's Pionus, any bird can be trained to be content and OK with others than just their owners. This takes commitment and time, and a lot of patience and training. Which one again, sounds like an issue on her side, not the birds. Caique's (Kay-yeek) are like cockatoos but in a smaller body. If you can not handle a GCC, do NOT get a caique. If your pet bird isn't thriving, but just surviving, you need to be looking for someone who can make your birds life better. I think this is something you should look into for real. You don't seem like a good bird owner unless you start changing things.

I do not think you handled that bird well. I got mine at 3 months old and in 4 days i was able to gain his trust. Not 100% but atleast he started showing some trust, and now I can make him step up and go potty. It takes a lot of patience. You need to wait until your bird is ready. Your bird will make initiative and not you. He nibs and bites but im working on that now slowly but surely. I AM LOVING MY PINEAPPLE GREEN CHEEK CONURE!!! You need to do more research gurl!

Na,I dont agree at all,I adopted mine a week before Christmas 2018,took her around 4 weeks to come around to trusting me aswell as her timid ness subsiding,she hasn't bitten me once,not once & now we adore one another,she locks me and cuddles into me etc,shes actually friendlier and more loving than my Budgies/Parakeets,I would 100% recommend a Green Cheek Conure for a pet if you do your research first of course,also the Green Cheek Conure is a better option than to a Sun Conure say if you live in a flat/apartment as the Green Cheek is way more quieter,she only has a mad half hour of squawking each day & the rest of the time she is quiet or quiet little chirps and noises not screeching and screaming,so yes,If tou have a Budgie/Parakeet or if you did and it has passed away and you feel you would like to take it up a step in the bird world then I really would recommend a Green Cheek Conure,its all about having patience & using some common sense at the end of the day.🙂🦜

Please rehome your bird. It deserves a life with someone who actually enjoys what is standard bird behavior. You didn't do your research, you aren't doing it a favor by "sticking it out". There is a home out there where someone who actually enjoys birds is desperately looking for a pet.

I got my GCC just over a week ago, and he was completely untamed and terrified, however now he won’t leave me alone, he loves to cuddle and be around me. I definitely feel like you’ve probably given your bird the wrong attitude and expected him to be a perfect pet straight out the box, you have to work with the bird, I just feel like cause he didn’t meet your own expectations you find him a nuisance

If you cant take care of this green cheek please dont get another bird!! Period!! All of the things you are describing are failures on your part, not the bird's. You have concerns with biting but then give up on training, and it is not going to get better with a bigger bird (with a bigger beak). You talk about him as though he is nothing more than a nuisance to you and it's very sad.

Wow poor bird. GCC are a lot of hard work and daily effort and it really sounds like your not motivated enough to work on or improve his behaviour. Also im not sure why you were surprised that your GGC bites because being nippy is a very common trait in GGC and if you did your research like you said you would have been prepared for this and able to correct this behaviour? This poor bird is going to be alive for the next 15+ years and it really sounds like your not the right match for a GGC.

He’s not dumb, he’s stubborn and you are impatient. Stubbornness is like a huge personality trait for these guys - but they are also very loving. Don’t underestimate their intelligence - I’ve heard people say they are a big parrot in a little parrot’s body. You may have a better time if you respect his space and let him learn to trust you. Getting a Caique is not going to be any different. Devote your time to the bird you already have. He deserves your love!

Most people shouldn't have birds. They don't understand them and don't really know how to handle or train them. Birds are messy. They are noisy. They may chew. They are not like dogs and cats, and you can easily ruin a bird's personality/behavior with poor handling and ignorant responses. Birds go through puberty which can really change their behavior, and later have hormonal periods in which they may show aggression even towards those they are normally affectionate with. If you can't understand these periods or know how to handle them, don't have a bird. This is not a toy or accessory. It is a living, feeling creature which needs understanding and respect for what it is. The problems you describe make clear that you don't know what you are doing. A problem companion bird is a reflection of the owner. The sad thing is that this bird could live up to 25 years or more, and this intelligent creature deserves to spend that in a loving, attentive home with someone who knows how to handle it properly.

Majority of what you said is applicable to literally all parrots. More or less the bigger the parrot the more destructive/messy they are. The tricks? Some parrots just don’t get it. It’s not about the breed it’s about the individual bird.

Here's a tip. Don't cage them. I own many Conures and I Don't cage them. They all have a stand. At night I create a little tent for them to sleep. Believe it or not it teaches them to not poop on you. They start to flap when is poopy time.

You didn’t train him properly and sounds like he wants a flight cage. You shouldn’t try to tell people it’s a bad idea to own an animal just because you messed up. There’s so much information out there. It was your choice to make, not the birds.

Unfortunately, the behaviors you are describing are just parrots--not just Green Cheeks. Except the biting, they can be bitey--but if they are hand-fed babies when you get them, that usually isn't a problem--they nibble a lot, but don't bite hard--if you raise them well. Also, don't know if you're bird is full flighted, but that really helps with personality and mood. Green Cheeks are also known to be very quiet for a parrot. Also, I always think that getting a bird delivered by mail can really scar them for life. It's traumatic and scary and parrots don't forget. They are super smart and sensitive. I think if you work with your bird a bit, watch some training videos, get some good toys he's allowed to destroy, talk to him a TON, give him lots of attention (he should be with you--loose out of his cage for at least a couple hours every day--preferably more. Make sure his cage is large and has lots of perches and toys--so it looks like a forest. Good nutrition is important too--a good food with healthy ingredients--don't trust all commercial foods (soy is terrible for birds). This could affect their mood. I think you can turn your relationship with your green cheek around, but it will take some effort. Parrots are HUGE commitment--much more than budgies (parakeets) and cockatiels. If you are set up for them, it doesn't have to feel that unpleasant though. My little 3 year old female Green Cheek is a true joy. I've had her since she was 3 months--from a local breeder who hand-fed her. She's also a pest, a brat and a mess maker, and a lovebug and clown. Enjoy them for what they are. And I wouldn't rule out re--homing. If you take the time to find a good home, it might actually be easier on your bird--especially if you are unhappy with him. Someone with a lot of time and experience could give him a wonderful home where he might blossom.

Are you sure your pet is dumb? You’re literally petting it wrong, you’re not meant to pet anywhere other than the head or it’ll definitely cause some hormonal behavior thus leading to biting. Just put some proper time and effort into it’s training and 90% of your problems will be resolved. Don’t get a bird, or any high maintenance pet for that matter, and expect to not need to put in effort. It’s never the animal, it is always the trainer.

I can’t tell if this is supposed to be a sarcastic video or not, but ALL birds bite, poop, and are destructive and territorial, so don’t single out green cheek conures or discourage people from owning one. It is good to let people know these things prior to getting a bird though because a lot of people think they’re so cute, but they can’t handle the maintenance and give them to a shelter. I can add plenty to your list, but I wouldn’t tell anyone to never buy a bird. I’ve always had birds growing up. Now I’m an adult and thought I’m an experienced bird owner and can get birds on my own. Turns out there’s a lot I didn’t know and was doing wrong. So I agree that everyone should know all the responsibilities and what a huge commitment it is before getting a bird, but don’t discourage people from getting birds because they are very affectionate and smart. If he’s destructive, he’s bored. Get him foraging toys and puzzles to stimulate his mind and keep him from plucking or screaming. If he makes a mess, out a skirt around the cage or get an acrylic cage. Two things you left out is birds are a lot of money and very clingy. Again, this is for people who can be a good owner. If you have money to buy them new toys, a big cage, free time to spend snuggling with them for hours, and can tolerate all the other crap, you will make a great owner. Aside from all that, these are a huge bonus of a bird as a pet: You don’t have to take them out to walk them and their poop does not smell.

Exactly, step by step, patience is key. I had a green cheek conure who I loved soo much & she passed away recently, you don't deserve it.

Honestly, I've had many birds... yellow napped amazon, 2 African greys, 2 severe macaws, a parakeet, 2 green cheeks, and a silver crested cockatoo... they ALL bite, are messy, take alot to train, chew everything, etc. Love my green cheeks the most. I currently have a cinnamon dilute green cheek. Birds just aren't for everyone and you may just be one of those. Good luck!

I have a rescue GCC who is about to turn 2yrs in October.... I never ever knew what a GCC was until I got him (I live in Australia and there isn't many of them around in normal pet shops) but I had rescued wild native birds, gecko, guinea pigs, rabbits, mice, a husky and owned a couple of budgies and I did EVERYTHING possible to figure out the best way I can provide for my little GCC Kermit and also for all my other rescue animals. He had 3 homes in 3 months because people just like yourself didn't want to put the effort into raising a baby parrot who holds a huge amount of intelligence and love if you work for it and show them the same. I can tell you straight up - you are the problem and not the bird. There is tonnes of information available at your fingertips if you just bother to stop straightening your hair and putting on your make up and look it up! You are coming across as another Victoria Ryan - when you called your GCC dumb it is a reflection on you and not the bird. Btw - when your GCC is 10months old - it's about to hit puberty and they will have several weeks / month or so of moodiness and being uncomfortable and feeling weird and unwell - just like you did when you hit puberty girl and GCCs will settle down after 3years of age - that's when you can officially say they are an adult bird. My Kermit says 'love you and I love you, kermit, keeeerrrrrmmit, morning, sweet dreams, kiss kiss, mwwwwaaahh, hi Kermit, coming, step up and nuh (his way of saying no). he honks when he copies me laughing, he dances and sings to Gangnam style and rock lobster, he says my boyfriend's name - because I spent time and gave him loads of affection and engaged him in my life and didn't just leave him in the cage all the time. I also copy his whistles and bird sounds - so he knows it's a two way street in our relationship. And welcome to the parrot world - parrots are messy - wild birds are messy - all birds are messy.... 🤨 Get a cage with side trays so it contains the mess. And my GCC bonded with both me and my boyfriend even though we don't live together - when my boyfriend comes over - Kermit is happy to spend time with us both or some days prefers one person or the other because I made sure when I first had him that we came as a pair in his new flock by leaving Kermit with my boyfriend and going up the road to do some shopping and giving my boyfriend treats to share with Kermit and Kermit loves baths and showers so I made sure that Kermit got to do this all with my boyfriend when he comes over. Sometimes Kermit will accidentally poo on us and we will say oohhh Kermit gently and calmly but when he does poos off the side of the furniture onto the floor - we rewarded him with saying good boy - kiss kiss and at the beginning we used to give him a sunflower seed too. Now I barely have to say good boy because he does poos properly 95% of the time. If your GCC bites - don't react with an ouch, yell or sound - don't yank your finger away - just put them on the other side of the room onto a perch, onto the floor calmly - they will eventually learn not to bite so hard and if your GCC gives you little nibbles that are gentle then let them do so that when they do bite hard next time and you redirect it - they learn the difference of their own behaviour. GCCs need at least 2-3 hours of out of cage time each day - if you're not doing that then it's most likely the reason why he screams alot - and make sure you have an abundance of toys and millet so he can be entertained in the cage and not bored and lonely. Don't keep mirrors in the cage as they will think it's another bird and become more territorial over the cage. Don't give him heaps of fruit because sugars make a male bird aggressive and hormonal - give him more veggies then fruit for vitamins. I brought a pak-o-bird carrier and Kermit gets to go for walks with us and also visits my mum's in it. We take him in the car for trips through drive through or when we get takeaways from the local cafe - these are all activities you can do with your GCC and he will love it. I cannot believe you went and brought a caique - I truly hope you don't get any other birds until you can be bothered to be a true and active parrot owner - there is saying about conures - you don't welcome them into your flock - they welcome you into their's - because they are a huge bird in a tiny body. I cannot imagine my life without my GCC - he is such a sweet, affectionate, funny, bossy, unique and adorable little man! He also will comfort me when I cry by cuddling up to my cheek and giving me kisses in my ear and lips- you are missing out on so much because you are not doing the right things!

Oh and I know you're young and a little naive, but when you post a KZfaq video you are inviting "judgement". Just saying....

1-If you want to help with being territorial give him a second play area so he doesn’t feel like his cage is his only safe place. 2-yes they’re messy but what did you expect? I have a parrotlet (a third the size of a conure) and she’s messy too. 3- if he’s so destructive he’s bored. Give him new toys/more to do 4-He May just not want the treats you’re offering. Also it takes time and lots of practice. You can’t do it once then give it up. Something to note-between the age of 1-3 all birds mature. This means most will become very aggressive, start biting and not following rules you put in place. This can last anywhere from 3 months to 3 years if you don’t train them not to. Once this passes you will usually get a much nicer kinder bird. Hope this helps!

A lot of the things listed in the video are just parrot behaviors. If you can't handle these, you are not ready for a parrot. Parrots are messy, destructive, and most are pretty loud. Thank you for the statement in the beginning of the video. Too many parrots are bought by uneducated people and dumped in shelters. It's truly awful the things some birbs have to go through.

It takes awhile to train your bird properly, also your conure needs to RESPECT and TRUST you. If he doesn’t trust nor respect you it will be extremely hard trying to train him. He’s not dumb, he just might not respect you. Don’t compare your bird to your friends, he may have just bonded with her faster or respects her. All birds have different personalities, they’re also all messy :)

This video makes me a bit upset on how she pretends to know everything about birds. You can't get a parrot thinking they'll behave like a parakeet. Parakeets are birds for show, conures (sub section of parrots) need love and attention like many parrots. She can't put it into it's cage thinking that will teach it to behave better. My conure had a biting problem to strangers when I first got him, but by showing him to other people he learned not to be scared of them. Your conure will bite and not be trainable if you don't try, maybe don't discourage people who want a beautiful loving breed of bird because of the fact you aren't willing to put in enough time with yours.

Your bird is not stupid, and it made me sad to hear you say that :( Bird Tricks does consultations if you really need help with your birds. I would suggest training videos and using a clicker if you haven't tried so already.

I adore my GCC, Amigo. In fact I'm planning on adding another larger Conure, a Blue Crown. Everybird is different. A lot hasto do with your energy. Also you said he's a baby and it will just get worse. That is unfair and actually not true. (Unless you're projecting & manifesting that anticipation. If you believe that will happen, sadly it probably will!) If he's a baby he may also be going through his first molt which makes them moody. Conures (especially green cheeks, are known to be some of the friendliest and easiest parrots to have as companions. If you can't handle a sweet little GCC I would suggest birds are simply not for you and wouldn't ever recommend getting another. Hopefully you stick it out with your GCC, he's so cute! And doesn't deserve this negative video. Maybe have a change in your attitude towards him will help along with better educating yourself on his care. #birdtricks is a really helpful KZfaq channel to check out.

I have owned parrots for years and most of these are normal things. If they bite you train them not to you just need patience. I would recommend them if people were to by one

This literally just irritated me so much. Every bird has a personality of its own but that doesn't mean you can't teach the bird basic mannerisms.

“They’re not smart?” I believe they’re smart. Maybe your bird understands but just wants to give you hell. Mines is pretty smart, he can drink out of water bottles, knows to step up, recall, and knows sign language.

I think why there's so much hate towards this video is because of how you handled your reasoning. Any pet has pros and cons not just conures. You most likely missed the signs that your conure was trying to tell you and that may be the reason for its biting. By the sounds of you getting frustrated with its behavior and giving up by putting your bird in the cage gives the impression that you weren't ready for a conure. You seem comfortable with the breed you are used to caring for. Bonding with a pet can take time and not dedicating to it can result misunderstandings. Conures have the trait of bonding to one person. So the bird behaving that way is normal. Your young, but you need to put more effort with your bird. Saying that you had it for 10 months shouldn't be an excuse. Your bird probably isn't as tamed as others because you give up and put it away. I don't mean to put it as rude, but you don't give the impression of a conure expert. Just a person who tried getting a new breed and not liking it's breed's personality.

I have fallen in love with a pineapple that hatched Oct 2019. She (My intuition says she is a she..of course I'm not sure) is the sweetest little gooey bundle of love and affection. The first time I saw her she was hanging by one foot in the middle of her cage like a little monkey and scratching her head with the other foot. When I approached the cage she crawled right up and wanted me to scratch her head. Immediately stepped up and there she stayed for the next 45 minutes getting head scratches and chewing at the pearlized buttons of my plaid workman jacket. She wiggled her way into my curly hair and went to sleep in my neck. I can't stop thinking about her. I didn't want another bird, as I already own a blue Quaker parrot, but now I dont know that I can live without her.

I'm sorry you feel that way about your bird. But not all Green Cheek Conures are the same. Maybe you failed to see that fact on your research? My bird also removes keys from my laptop, but lucky for me I didn't have to pay hundreds to fix it.. I just popped them back into place. All Conures are just so cuuute!!!

Hi Briclyn! You look young and some things can only be learned through experience. And owning a GCC is one 😁. You're right - They ARE a lot of work. You now have the opportunity to learn how to care for a GCC. There are some things that will never end with a GCC so you should learn ways to deal with them. Here's a few tips that work for me: To minimize the mess down the wall - buy a piece of plywood as wide and as tall as the cage (or there about), hang a large towel (or 2 or 3) over the plywood and place it behind the cage. The mess is never going to stop but now you only have to wash the towel(s) and not the whole wall. Buy a hand vac and keep it next to the cage. When you walk by, use it to vacuum up the seeds on the floor. This will minimize the mess under the cage and it's easier to sweep up a few seeds more often than a pile of seeds once in awhile. The messy cage - well you gotta change/clean the bottom pan every day. Chewing/destructive behavior - my GCC pulled keys off my laptop too! Isn't that irritating? And chewing window sills (or other things around the house) - find something your bird doesn't like (mine hates anything bright blue). I put a bright blue towel on top of the fridge (I don't want him pooping on top of my fridge) - problem solved. Biting - buy some gloves. Don't let your bird bully you. You can't physically punish a bird so you have to be persistent. My GCC wouldn't go back in his cage sometimes. I got gloves so when I caught him he could bite and he finally figured out I wasn't going to let go. Hmmmm... the biting doesn't work so he realized going back in his cage voluntarily was the better choice. Now don't get me wrong, he still nips sometimes and if I startle him he might bite. Some GCC are very lovable, others not so much. They're all different. Dogs will adapt to you, but YOU have to adapt to a bird. You can do it! Enjoy your learning experience and good luck!
