A school is a school. There are very few instances where the school you went to matters. If you're a STEM major, you'll be fine no matter where you come from as long as it's accredited properly. Stop taking on massive debt for a Bachelor's degree because no one really cares for more than three seconds what school you went to. Go to a place that's comfortable, has the major you want, and looks nice.

Can't speak on the Harvard experience specifically, but I am an Ivy League student (Dartmouth) and this so-called "massive debt" simply doesn't apply to prestigious schools. Dartmouth (and also Harvard) give a freakishly large amount of financial aid such that anyone whose family makes under 60k per year don't pay a single penny. My family makes a little over 100k per year and after financial aid (none of which is loans), we contribute 10k per year. In fact, Dartmouth is so certain about giving you exactly how much you need that they adjust their financial aid based on the amount of outside scholarships you get (which is a whole different issue). But yeah. A world class education has its perks, and the financial aid is incredible. Even if I chose my school based on cost alone, it STILL would have been Dartmouth, which was cheaper after aid than all of the in-state public schools I applied to. People assume Ivies are expensive, but they only are if you are rich. I understand that your advice comes from a place of empathy, but for 99% of people it's not great advice. I would still recommend anyone qualified to apply to Ivies that they like and just look at their financial aid package before throwing out the idea of going to such fabulous schools.

@@sorry9861 Everything you said made sense. I also wasn't talking about ivy league schools only either, it was in general. I think if you're $70k in debt from a bachelor's it's ridiculous. I also want saying people should go to the best school available to them. I was more specifically talking about the notion that school prestige matters when in most cases it doesn't.

Somewhat, you’re right. Almost every single GED class is the same every school. Psych 101 is the same at Harvard as it is at your state college. The difference is the professors and the equipment at Harvard. You’re being taught by people high in their field, very respected scholars. Harvard and other similar colleges will have amazing research facilities. This is why you need to look into what YOU want out of college and not just the name of the school. Don’t go to school just because of the name, go to the school because they excel in the field that you want to be in. Some colleges are known for certain programs, like my school is very well known for their business program and a lot of people go there just for that. Harvard is well well known for their medical school, law school, and MBA program, which are all amazing programs that probably have extra funding or better resources than other colleges would have. You’re paying in extorted price because of the resources that are given to you in the opportunities that you can get from the school.

Harvard was forced into changing their criteria for acceptance. Since then they have pulled massive amounts of money from the maintenance and development of student housing. I'm glad they suffer just like us at State School suffered. I was in a somewhat older dorm but not really one of the older ones but mine didn't have AC and my freshman year are heat was broken in the room but everybody else was complaining that their rooms were too hot so I convinced my roommate to not tell the front desk and let me sneak in a heater. I lived in that same dorm for my freshman and sophomore years and the fire alarm in the building is notoriously broken, so it was very common to have to get up at 3 in the morning and stand outside for 15 minutes. We were also warned at the beginning of the year that certain air fresheners were enough to set off the fire alarm. It created a kind of "Boy Who Cried Wolf" situation once when the alarm actually went off because a pipe had burst in the building and hot steaming water was flooding one of the floors and a ton of people got in trouble because they thought it was a regular fire alarm and didn't want to bother getting up, especially because it was the middle of a very freezing cold winter. I'd be curious to know if anybody could guess what school I went to and what dorm I lived in. I wasn't even sure if it was Notorious across campus or just kind of amongst kids in the Departments that tended to live there.
