GSM Is GSM... MPG IS MPG.. To clarify, GSM is a standard metric of weight.. Grams per square meter it's a measurement of fabrics weight and density.. With that said for us to determine GSM we need to WEIGH the towel. Yes density plays a part as well, but again we need to WEIGH the towel to determine that.. GSM isn't the best way to determine the quality of the yarn, the overall performance of the towel or it's durability and longevity. I have used 800gsm towels that have scratched the paint and fallen apart after a few washes! Hope that helps:)

Hey Scott! I am a subscriber of yours and have watched nearly every one of your videos. I have learned a great deal from you. I am 63, retired and on Social Security Disability due to extreme degenerative Arthritis and other health issues. Nonetheless, I am ODC; therefore I can't help myself from being as active as I can ;-) I was a professional artist making a good living painting heirloom portraits. When I was young my parents and grandparents taught me "a job worth doing is worth doing right!" I kept my bicycles in perfect shape; over the years I've done the same with my cars and motorcycles. I currently have three older Mercedes; my favorite is a 2005 E320, Silver with Black leather interior. I work at keeping it in Showroom condition. All this rambling (like you?) to ask if you've ever tried Rain Drops Detailing Supply products? I think it was on a couple of Apex Detailing videos. I like how the glass Rain Drops glass products appear to work. I would love your opinion regarding this. By the way, I have four children; one son named Scott. (Pretty good name, huh?)

just for general-purpose microfiber towels that I use for anything from taking polish off a car cleaning windows are the towels from Costco I don't know who makes them I just know that the GSM is 300 and you get 36 of them for like $20 I mean it's really hard to beat and they're so affordable that you get a good couple of washers out of them and use them for like picking up oil or something like that doing an oil change and then you throw them away some people spend ridiculous amounts of money on these towels but if you're using towels for drying any what's better waffle weave or regular towels that's Up For Debate to using a blower obviously would be best but some people don't have those.

Agree on most of your points, however, there's one flaw in your logic. 😊 GSM is GSM. Size of the towel is irrelevant. 300 GSM on a square meter towel will still be fraction of 300 GSM on a 16"x16" towel or any other size. It's just a measurement of weight on a certain surface area, which happens to be measured per square meter, so for any given towel (regardless of size) a 600 GSM towel will be twice as heavy as a 300 GSM. - Cheers!

Unfortunately that's not true..there is a margin of error when trying to find the true gsm.. I will show in future videos of towels that are supposedly 350gsm vs another towel that's 500gsm, the towels Many many times will weigh the same in weight.. I honor your perspective but it's not actually true and some resellers of microfiber towels here in the states have discussed this at length.. We will always have a degree of error when it comes to gsm:) Thanks for your comment

GSM is a standard like PSI or MPG. If a company sells a towel quoting a specific GSM and that's not what you get when you receive the towel, then they are false advertising.
@twsxc700
@twsxc700 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your videos. I enjoy watching and learning. Neur0bit is correct in that gsm is gsm. The material that the towel is made of is what is assigned the grams per square meter (gsm) number. If you assume you have a bolt of material with a rating of 350 gsm and you cut a 16" x 16" piece to make a hand towel from that bolt, it will be 350 gsm. If you cut a beach towel (say 2.5' x 7') out of that same bolt it will also the same gsm as the 16" x 16" towel. The gsm is calculated for the entire bolt. The size the material is cut into is irrelevant. All towels cut from that bolt will have the same gsm. Hope this helps.
@luxurymicrofiber419
@luxurymicrofiber419 5 жыл бұрын
@@RAMII19780529 your point is valid, GSM is a standard metric, but when applied in different applications, in this case the size of the towel, the numbers don't truly reflect similar level of weight (it should in theory). We use a term called shrinkage in the industry, if you cut up 1sq meter into 100 pieces and weight them all, you will lose some weight in the process, hence making it difficult to measure. I think Scott's point is valid in the sense, don't get hung up on GSM alone, it's just one measure.

If you're using a microfiber towel on an engine compartment, look it up in his prior video he has discussed that. If you're using it to remove wax, on the inside of your vehicle on plastic trim, on leather, on fabric,... All has been discussed on a Prior video... By the way you'll find that he has no all purpose microfiber towel to recommend that is best on all surfaces if you watch the videos that cover different aspects of what you would use a microfiber towel on... I know this does not answer your question directly, but then again it would take just as long to answer your question as it would be for you to look up these videos and watch them. Happy searching, I know you'll find other videos on other aspects of detailing while searching for this information that you will be happy that you started searching...

Dallas Paint Correction & Auto Detailing Thanks Scott, Lol, I agree but I have hundreds more towels including the Eagle Edgeless and they all work perfect and my cars are new with perfect paint. I am as meticulous as anyone. It is these 10 only. TRC replied back to me moments ago and suggest soaking in detergent (appropriate) and white vinegar, then washing and drying them again. Since the fibers are breaking off, this probably won't work but I will try out of curiosity. Not the end of the world but this caused me to rethink my towels. I had bought towels from Matt at OG and like them better than the Eagle Edgeless for most uses and am now switching. I think too soft is not necessarily always better at least for me. I became a victim of 1100 gsm is better than 500. 500 is better than 420 etc... These high pile towels are nice but somewhat of a gimmick for most things. Scott, GSM is not a measure of weight, it's a measure of weight divided by a unit of surface area. The size of the towel is totally irrelevant. Density is a measure of weight divided by unit of volume, which would be surface area times the thickness. GSM, therefore, is a function of thickness. The density of water is 8.34 pounds per gallon. It doesn't matter if I'm measuring one gallon or ten gallons, the density is exactly the same. There is no margin of error. I hope this helps. We love you all, Scott.

GSM stands for grams per square meter and it's a measurement of the fabrics weight and density.. The only way we can determine GSM and density is to WEIGH the towel.. How else would you do it? At the end of the day a weight scale will be needed:) Many confuse this simple fact and like to split hairs on how to determine GSM or what it means but at some point we are going to need a weight scale..... You are correct that we have to weigh the towel, but the size of the towel is irrelevant because the weight is being DIVIDED by a unit of surface area. It doesn't matter how big the towel is, because the total weight is being divided by the total amount of surface area. Are you saying that if I weigh one gallon of water and then weigh ten gallons of water there will be a difference in density because there is a margin of error due to the difference in the size of the samples that I measured?

Back in the mid-70's I worked for many years in the research department for a technical textile manufacturer and can only begin to imagine how the technical aspect of it has changed since then. Fabric weight has some bearing on how it may be used but there is much more to it. A towel and a scouring pad can have the same GSM and even be made from the same general type (polyester, nylon, etc.) of fiber but have very different uses. You can have fabrics made from the same fiber mix, size, etc, with the same GSM but have a different feel depending on how it is constructed. It was not unusual for one of our marketing people to bring in a 6 inch square (or less) of a fabric and want to know the weight, fiber type, fiber composition and many other qualities from this small piece. Although we could easily determine the GSM, fiber chemical percentages, it required much more work to be specific on the fiber type. Fibers have denier (cross sectional size), crimp, length, surface finish (actually part of the fiber), and other attributes. You could have one lot (tons) of fibers that were supposedly the same as the next lot, but performed slightly differently and that was in the 70's. I can't even begin to imagine the differences today. What will help the beginning detailer and weekend warrior is to explain the differences in types and quality of towels. What qualities to look for, what qualities to avoid, which ones you use and why. You do that so well with many of products that you showcase and we greatly appreciate it. I couldn't figure out where you were headed in this video. A 100 GSM towel will be 100 GSM whether it is a square meter (100 grams), a quarter of a square meter (25 grams) or a tenth of a square meter (10 grams). What makes a difference is how it is constructed and what it is constructed with, what makes a difference to us, the user, is how it actually performs. I'm sure most users care more about - can it scratch, how absorbent is it, does it lint, how long does it last, which one gives me the most bang for my buck. Scott, we sincerely thank you for all you do, keep up the good work.

I have discussed towels I like and use and why.. This video wasn't only about GSM but a discussion about blend and origin of towel and how that's used in marketing... I appreciate your comment and yes as I said in the video I will have more videos in the future about microfiber towels...

Scott I have watched most of your videos and realize this however newer viewers may not. I just wanted to add a bit more background to show there is a lot more to these towels than the hype some sellers are presenting. It is through people like you that we learn the real useful truth about products. God bless you and keep the faith.

I get all of my microfiber towels from Dollar Tree 🌲 $1.25 for a two pack or a single large soft towel. Great quality especially for the price. Not sure where in the hell they are made or their blend but they perform. And that’s all that counts.

Just a note, the most important thing when using microfiber on paint, be gental and don't think you clean or wipe your kitchen, else you'll see swirls.

I have learned and do my best to practice ' K.I.S.S.' in many ways for different things. I do my studies and if I should become attracted , at a price I'm willing to pay and seemingly should suit the needs, I will bite. A great many have worked out just fine while of course others have not. Your bummed for a bit from the waste but in the end I just move on.

Steel wool is abrasive. If is spun thin enough it can be used to "polish" things like remove rust from bumpers. But even OOOO steel wool scratches paint. No matter what "quality" of polyester, it is supper hard...almost on par with steel. So how has everyone jumped on the bandwagon of using super hard polyester on painted or polished surfaces? some manufactures even vaguely say to not use the on painted surfaces. How has the lie of numbers been glossed over that no one sees this super hard material is just really fine steel wool?

Oh, come on. GSM, blend, and weave are objective measures that indicate the quality of the towel, all other things being equal. If we have a reliable supplier, we don't have to measure this, given that the supplier can tell us these things. China has a relatively freewheeling market that has been known to substitute melamine for wheat gluten and the like, so China vs. Korea may be seen by consumers as a measure of the reliability of the suppliers. Of course there's the chance for them to lie, but we aren't likely to buy every kind of towel in the universe to try them out and find which are good, and thus, we use these proxy measures to estimate the quality of the towel.

What's the deal with the chip on your shoulder, Scott? You seem to universally demonize those who sell products 'in your industry' indiscriminately. I'm sure, like anything, there are good and bad actors. I question how much more helpful this content would be if you could lighten up on the 'everybody's out to get you're rhetoric. You deliver a lot great content and this takes away from it for me - the weekend warrior and seemingly the target audience?

What else should I do?? I will continue to help all I can and I have many videos to come.. Having an opinion about me as having a chip on my shoulder because of a few videos is kind of silly:) Much love my friend It's not all peaches and cream, welcome to the planet.. @@dallaspaintcorrectionautod8343 I believe it was President Ronald Reagan who said it best; "Trust but verify". This seems to me that this would be a fair rough nutshell of your own overall theory of products and techniques which you espouse. In my head this also translates metaphorically into " do a test spot on everything". There are a new generation of quite young detailers who unbeknownst to them are the perfect product of the liberal public educational system which has NOT taught them how to critically think anymore but instead WHAT to think and therefore fall for pretty bottles and cool sounding hyperbole. These types of unvarnished vids are as you say "welcome to the planet" wake ups they absolutely need. Not just to stop getting suckered by advertising firms but also to quite getting sucker punched by by certain " forward thinking" authoritarian bodies that are praying they don't ever wake up. Sir; your advice is more than great for them. ..I would easily call it essential and critical but never overly negative. I've never seen you respond to shoddy products or techniques you are trying out in a hateful fashion; just honest and critical. My impression of most folks perceiving you as negative are they have been taught to get along at any cost rather than to figure out that the "line in the sand" needs to be much further away from them as a safety buffer and only so much bullshit actually needs to be tolerated. Sir I believe that you are doing a far greater service than JUST teaching folks how to maid service a vehicle. I say it like that on purpose because among the things you are bringing to the table honestly that is the least important of the lessons you are teaching. Thank you.

Dam Scott keep it up. Great work!! Looking forward to your MF Towel report. Your are exposing the under belly of the Auto detailing as it's 90% marketing, maybe 1 of the worst industries around sad to say. Just learning that a wax or sealant that gives great beading is NOT what you want as it causes water spots when it rains! You want a wax or sealant that sheets the water so it almost eliminates the water spots, but marketing says customers wants the beading effect to show off, but really don't understand the problem. Keep it up Scott!
