You can be #rich.
Don’t roll your eyes. This is not what you think.
This episode today is so digestible. So counterintuitive. And one of the most enlightening conversations I’ve had with anybody.
Most of us have been thinking about money all wrong.
It turns out that the amount of money you have in the bank (or don’t) is only a small part of your relationship with money.
Ramit Sethi (@ramitsethi) is a NYT best-selling author and #finance advisor with a brand new, top-ranked Netflix series called How to Be Rich, where he coaches real people about how to take control of their financial lives.
He says you’ve been thinking about #money all wrong.
If you were told that you need to create a budget and stick to it, Ramit calls BS.
Instead, you’ll learn about your money dials, the only four numbers that matter, the 85% Rule, why the 10 Year Bucket List is so important, the one thing you should NEVER say about yourself, and best of all, what it means to live a Rich Life.
Today’s episode is going to change the way you SEE money, because when you see it differently, you’ll treat it differently.
And if you’re looking for another zero-cost resource to help you change your mindset around finances, sign up for my free training called Take Control with Mel Robbins - www.melrobbins.com/takecontrol
And if you're ready to start living your rich life with more confidence and no regrets, sign up for my exclusive signature course, Launch with Mel Robbins. Learn all the exciting details here: www.melrobbins.com/launch
Xo Mel
In this episode, you'll learn:
00:00 Intro
07:44 Just like me, Ramit has his own story of big-time money loss.
11:20 Assignment #1: Think back to your 20’s and ask yourself this question.
14:17 How do your childhood influences impact your beliefs around money?
22:23 If you want to live a rich life, you need to do two things.
26:23 Wondering what most people love to spend money on?
30:32 Why is it important to come up with a fun vision around money?
34:38 How do you define your “rich life”?
37:36 I think everyone listening needs to do this fun activity.
41:02 Especially if life is hard right now, THIS is what you have to do..
45:27 Here’s how you step your way closer to your rich life.
47:00 How can you feel in control of something if you don’t understand the details?
50:18 The four numbers everyone should know to stop feeling overwhelmed by money.
58:12 NEVER say this about yourself because it will create your reality.
1:06:30 The two areas most people spend too much money on.
1:10:37 Ramit lays down the bottom line about changing your mindset around money.
1:12:23 Here’s your new money mantra to play on repeat.

Mel, I think it would be helpful if you include a picture of the person you're interviewing in your thumbnail. For one, it visually differentiates each video a bit more. Secondly, on the off-chance that someone doesn't follow you but they follow your guest, you've got a new listener/subscriber when your video pops up in their feed. It would also help to put their name in the title. All this to say, I really appreciate & enJOY your podcast!

My first experience of feeling this was when I bought clothes for my kids at Target for the first time with my own paycheck. We had been living for so long off the generosity of others, which was such a blessing, but the feeling of being able to buy new clothes for my kids is a feeling I will never ever forget.

I can tell you that psychology of money is so real. When I was little our neighbor put in a beautiful pool and frequent outdoor parties that we did not attend, so I asked my mom if we could put a pool in. She told me the only reason they put that pool in was because her dad died and the life insurance paid for it. Not sure whether that was the truth or not, but ever since my subconscious told me that to have a rich life, unfortunate events needed to happen. Later, as an adult when my own father died the inherentance was used for a down payment. Subconsciously I felt so undeserving of that house that circumstances caused me to foreclose within 5 years. My whole life has been one financial struggle after another. I am grateful for this podcast episode.

Most people don't understand the power of compound interest or are just impatient. However, I think it's better for the average person to invest in the S&P 500 and wait, which is reliable, albeit extremely long: many years, or just hire an investment advisor and accelerate wealth accumulation. Most people underestimate the power of the latter.

Good morning Mel…you once said on one of your podcasts that you read every comment, so I wanted to share this helpful concept as you continually strive to reach the vast in this world… I believe you, and you bringing variety to help people in many areas of their life. And many times I would love to share your content, but what I have found personally is your choice of words can be offensive to some, and because you’re audience brings all kinds , it would be so helpful if you stayed neutral with some of your language. I am a believer in Christ and I can’t forward this information to other believers because they would be hugely offended by your “F” word often. Your reaction may be it’s just language, Debbie… But I believe that words are powerful, and they have double meaning and we have to realize that our goal is to help everyone not just people who will not be offended by your language. I speak from the heart, and from a nonjudgmental Place but from one entrepreneur to another the saying, is you get more with honey than you do vinegar. From the bottom of my heart, I urge you to take that word out of your vocabulary when you’re talking to the world and you will touch more lives. ❤️🙏

When I was a child, I remember going to the beach and most of people in the restaurants were Americans. Me and my family didn’t have money, so while I was eating my watermelon y visualized myself going to those restaurants. Few years ago I went back and I invited my best friend to eat at a nice restaurant closed to the beach. I told him, you can order whatever you want ( it’s my treat). I ended up drank and singing with the musicians. My friend said “ the money they you spent on a dinner, that’s the money I make in a whole week of work. I felt great being able to invite my friend:)).

I have to have a budget. I do not have much money after all my monthly bills. If I spend too much on one thing, it could leave me without something else. I actually budget "blow" money. I can use it for anything I want. I do not go over. It has helped me so much.

My big goal is to help my daughter walk again and use her left arm again. The rehab program for TBI that is near us costs $30,000 a month. Because she has had the injury since she was 15months old and is almost 13 years old now, 5 years of this program would be really valuable. That’s $1,800,000.

This is interesting. How does the advice work for people in their 60s or beyond who have long struggled with money, have debt, haven't saved adequately (or at all) for retirement and are scared and regretful? Is this exercise more for people in their 20s to 50s?

I guess the advice work for all age groups. Whether they're 20, 40 or 60. Linear thinking usually limits us. If we just look around more and more day after day we can change the vision.

The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

My rich life is me allowing the sun to kiss my eyelids awake daily. It's an annual vacation in Europe for 21 days and visiting my favorite countries with someone(s) I love. It's buying my son a car so that he can get to college and work without the expense of Uber. It's making homeownership possible for my son. It's funding my son's entrepreneurial dream. It's learning to play the piano on a new baby grand. It's smiling ten times more than frowning in a day. It's being excited for the day versus being afraid.

My grandmother and grandfather raised me. My memory of 💰 Money, my 2 sisters and I split $150 A month to buy clothing for our selves. My grandmother told us, we couldn’t get anything extra because she didn’t have it. She stressed Poverty. She told me I had to Work when I was 14. Therefore, my teen years were a complete nightmare. So I’m working at 14, up until today, I’m changing the way I THINK about Money. I do not believe in the system that I was unfortunately brought up in. I felt robbed. For this negative mindset as a child, this carried on in my 20s and 30s. I am well aware it’s due to the fact that I grew up in a poverty mindset house hold. This will Stop TODAY.

That Housing percentage is impossible in some places. A gross bug infested 1bed appt in my area ($1,200 in 2020) is 40% of an common office salary. Denver metro. Yeah, you can have roommates, or rent a basement for 20 years, like I did. So living in a real home paying what normal ppl pay here feels like a Swearword LUXURY. I’d love to see new percentages based on real housing costs. Ps. Been following you both for many years and I still gained an insight!

Hi, Mel! It's your new friend, Kat. I just wanted to show some love and appreciation for the content you put out into the world/universe!! I've been letting KZfaq choose which videos play next after I select one. As, I'm a new subscriber & there's so much content I want to ingest! I am 43 & finishing my BA in psychology. As it's been a life time goal that I've thus far been thwarted from achieving by allowing large obstacles to knock me off my path. I've been a healer & LMT for the past 13 years & I know I can do more. But I struggle to set these very kinds of goals for myself. As my past traumas and learned behaviors and life hardships have allowed me to become unmotivated. Well, I'm tired of listening to the *naysayers* that *currently* reside in my head. Working on those evictions hardcore this year and facing some hard truths, hard challenges but with amazing resources like KZfaq, podcasts and people like you, it's the exposure people like me need to move in more personal cheerleaders. I want to be more like you soon in my journey to also help people figure out and manifest their best!

Wow I get to know different perspectives about money from this amazing conversation. My parents passed the stress about money to me when I turned 20, like if you go to work then our family wouldn't be so stressed about money. That did not motivate me but put a burden on my shoulder and I've always tried to save as much money as possible instead of spending on things I like and really living the life I wanted. Here are some of the parts that really wow me: 20:57 The way you feel about money is highly uncorrelated to how much you've got in your bank. You have to do 2 things: know basic things in finance: interest rates, rule 72 + Work on your money mindset
