Outdoor vitals any good? Should I buy from outdoor vitals hiking and backpacking ultralight gear in 2021 or 2022? Camping gear. What to buy for a backpacking trip?

About time you joined the club! I have their Ventus, waiting on the Nova Pro to arrive, the Shadow Light, their hiking slacks, balaclava, their 15’ quilt and the pad. I have no complaints other than the pad being to slippery. I am am 64 yr old and have backpacked since I was 16 so I know quality when I use it. Looking forward to my 2022 trip on the CDT.

I adventure in my old SUV that I pulled the rear seats out of, built a small bed in the back, and loaded up with gear for mountain biking/hiking/kayaking. I know Outdoor Vitals is for ultralight hiking, but space and weight are just as valuable in my rig as my pack. My OV quilt was great in the summer and just kept me warm in the 30's in Oak Creek Canyon. My OV puffy jacket fits in the door cubby and keeps me totally warm at night around the campfire. I got in on the Kickstarter for the Ventus hoody and it was perfect for hiking West Clear Creek in the funky warm then cold canyon. I could go on. And the $10 a month "membership" is basically a savings account for high-quality gear. Love their gear.

Outdoor vitals has really come into their own, their quilts and bags are awesome from experience.. their ability to perform besides and outperform much more expensive gear really shows their appreciation for the the sport and for the people that are in it and looking to get into it. All without draining their savings, you can probably kit out your big three and clothes for less than 2/3rds probably 50-60% the cost without losing any performance. Great job!

The problem with any start-up company is that they are going to pass a lot of issues onto the buyer. This happens with established companies too as they introduce new products. You will see OV reviews talking about fit issues, material issues, etc. It is very important to note the year that the review came out, OV of today is not OV of 3 years ago. OV does seem to address these as they come up and are always trying to better themselves. This means that start-up companies are more likely to hear what their customers are saying compared to the established big brand names. OV would make for an interesting marketing study as they are being very innovative at a lower price point than typical ultralight cottage companies, bringing ultralight gear to a larger audience.
@randyholloway920
@randyholloway920 2 жыл бұрын
@Canda free. OV is NOT ultralight. Their gear is much heavier and lands squarely in the lightweight category. It’s one of the reason they aren’t growing faster since they aren’t innovating in the direction of market demand.

Yup. I was a Ventus kickstarter pledge, so I've had mine for a few months, and it's probably the only synthetic layer I own that I truly love. It has a MASSIVE comfort range of temperatures and it's very light and packs down really well. Big win on the Ventus.

I have a handful of product from them. I bought the new Shadowlight backpack 60L for my son in the first run during their first run of the product. We used if for a 260 mile thru hike in the Sierra which included the entire John Muir Trail. My son fell in love with this pack (he has a ton backpacking experience). We ware the same size pack so I carried if for several months one day. The pack carry’s weight nicely. We had 8 days of food to carry at one point plus the bearvault 500…. No troubles at all! Very comfortable AND the pockets allow for some fantastic organization on trail.

The LofTtek jacket is easily one of the best purchases I have ever made. It is incredibly warm even in frigid weather. I have used it in Northern IL/WI winter (temps around -20 at some points) and I would recommend it 10/10. Super light weight, super comfortable, versatile, etc. However, the branding a year or two ago was a struggle. The new Owl branding is so much better.

I recently bought the OV LoftTek jacket for $112. I have to say I was disappointed. The price was right, the quality and design are good, and it is very packable, but there is essentially no loft. LoftTek might perform on par with down, but you still need to put some of it in the jacket. This is a cool, but not cold, weather jacket. I am quite comfortable wearing the LoftTek jacket zipped up while in my house at 65 degrees. The REI Magma 850 Down Hoodie 2.0 easily has 2-3 times the loft of the LoftTek jacket.
@matthewpershing5128
@matthewpershing5128 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBigBlueMarble The importance of loft with synthetic insulation is much less than with down. Synthetic insulation can "flatten" with much less impact on the actual performance. I'd go try it out if I were you

@@TheBigBlueMarble at first glance I thought the same thing but after using it deer hunting in the rain and below freezing, it was a game changer. Staying warm when wet instead of getting cold and soggy on me was awesome. I use it with dragon wool base layer, Ventus hoodie and then lofttek jacket. It’s now my go to for cold and wet weather outdoor activities. It’s not a rain coat and it’s not the puffiest puffer coat but the best blend between them I’ve found.
@Dave_Outside

@@TheBigBlueMarble you are talking about the Loftek Adventure jacket? It’s supposed to be a lightweight jacket, not midweight like that REI jacket. The loftek is along the lines of a Patagonia Nano Puff jacket. So no it doesn’t have a lot of loft because it’s not supposed to, otherwise it wouldn’t be a lightweight jacket lol. But it is still warm and very useful.

Yes, the non-sewnthrough puffy design is a big thing now. OV had joined MH and Eddie Bauer, and there's probably others doing this. A couple manufacturers are also using stretch fabric to minimize the pump action that brings in cold air as you move and retains the air your body has already warmed. There's one sleeping bag maker I seen using stretch material, too, this may become a bigger trend of it works well. I do like the pit zips on the OV design, great idea. I need to check out the Ventus hoody, sounds like a great idea for our wet PNW climate and an alternative to fleece or wool.

I’ve gotten some of their gear recently. Dragonwool Hoodie - excellent piece of gear. I’d say it’s a tad overpriced for what it is, but I got it off the Kickstarter, so well worth that price. Also, the sale prices for it, definitely worth it. Great level of warmth for a baselayer or an early autumn/late spring for most people. Shadowlight - I got it as a 45L pack, I think this is really where this pack should live. I’d compare it to a slightly lower quality Gossamer Gear Mariposa, but the Mariposa is just too big at 60l for targeting the UL market. I think some of the design choices for the Shadowlight are more made just to be different/flashy, instead of keeping it 100% function. I think it’s a mix of a few ideas and doesn’t all flow as well as it could. Still a good bag and a perfect size to weight ratio.

Dan, noob question here: What do you wear to sleep in? Went on a November backpack trip w/ my son's boyscout troop. I had a sleeping bag rated to 20*, which I now realize only means survival and not comfort. But I froze my butt off. Do you carry separate sleep gear or how do you handle it? I mean, other than investing in a more expensive sleeping bag.

I have their inflatable pillow. I've tried it a few times and don't care for it. The round (kidney) shape of it doesn't fit well with me. I'm used to a squared off pillow when sleeping at home. Then trying to use something that's a totally different shape while out on the trail doesn't do me well. A square inflatable pillow does me well. It does seem to be built and designed well. The air valve is better designed than my other inflatable pillow.

Bummer with their redesigns, only kidding sort of. I have the dragoon wool, Ventus , 60L Shadowlight, Neck Gaiter and have the KotaUL on order. Love the Ventus the only thing that would make it better is that if I lost my belly. Great video Dan

I mean, they gave you a bunch of free gear right? Just saying. I think the line between sponsorship is blurry on KZfaq but I definitely believe that you are real about your suggestions. Although, Moore budget great please

How would you compare OV's latest sleeping bags to Cumulus bags of similar warmth ratings?

As always Dan great video! I’m a bit of a noob to backpacking and I’m really considering purchasing this new top quilt. Up in the air on getting either the 0 or 15* version but would like to ask you or anyone that would comment on what’s your going to bed attire? I don’t really hear anyone speaking about this? I’m mostly a car camper and my sleeping bags are supper toasty and I’m in shorts and a T-shirt when it’s 25* but I’m thinking obviously that can’t be the case here in say 30* temps with a UL top quilt can it? ( aside from freezing my nads off in the morning when I get out of this.) is just a base layer Sufficient or is it Required to obtain that listed comfort level of the top quilt or any UL sleep system? Love the videos!! You’ve been supper insightful, informative, and fun to watch! Keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll keep watching!! Thanks!

Hey Herman! Really appreciate the encouragement. Don’t hesitate about buying this quilt. It’s honestly the best one I’ve ever used. Not the lightest out there and there are ones that have even more customization but this one keeps me super warm at its rated temperature and does not have any drafts as long as you use the pad straps with it. As far as attire for sleeping… That totally depends on you. Start off with some layers and take them off as you get warm throughout the night. Just keep in mind that quilts are a learned experience. It may take a few nights before you figure it out as it seems you’re used to a sleeping bag. Check out this video I made on quilts and sleeping bags… kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsuHeqt4x7i-nIE.html

Ventura’s Hoodie….. quite honestly, its a home run. I’m not easily impressed. I have some high end puffies that cost serious $$$. The Ventus is surprisingly warm for the weight and is extremely versatile. I use it for backpacking, winter fly fishing in the NE and even running on cold days…. One of the best purchases I’ve made in three years… and I have a lot of high end gear.

As far as the smaller upper pocket, can’t you simply not use it and then you’d be able to fit trekking poles or tent poles?

Love my Ventus Hoodie. Also Love my Dragon Wool Hoodie but wish they came in women’s sizing because the men’s sizing sleeves are too long. I’m waiting on my NOVAUL jacket. Dan can you do a review on that jacket too? I agree with you Outdoor Vitals has some great gear at very reasonable prices.

I always wonder why OV gear is never listed in any of the best of lists, not even as a reference point. Like "we've tried this and this is why we didn't like it."

I bought their backpack when it first came out and thought I would give it a try: The divided front pocket for me is a deal killer. (I thought I could make it work but in the end it was no go.) The other thing that I did not like about the pack was the two upper side pockets are not stretchy. They are made of the same material as the pack itself and do not stretch. If outdoor vitals would fix these "two problems", I would definitely buy the pack again (Yes, I gave it away to someone else) and use it. Pass it on......

I know this video was done a while ago, but I had a couple of questions. Buying their nova pro jacket and Ventura hoodie. I’m 5’8” and weight 165lbs. Athletic. What size should I get in these? I normally wear a large in tshirts and sometimes large jackets look like I’m swimming in them. Considering I’ll be layering, just wanna make sure I get the correct size. Was thinking large? Thanks ahead of time. Josh

One thing is for sure, those gears are hideous. And the bag is just a piss poor copy of the Mariposa, while the insulated jacket is a copy of the Patagonia Micro Puff.
Why would Outdoor Vitals do this to me?! NOT COOL
