For those wanting the full story right up front my monthly cost of ownership is about $1200 a month to run and own my skeeter zx250. This is part of a series for new boat owners and those trying to decide what to buy and when to buy. I love my boat and this is what I want in life!

Thank you for the series. Recreational fishing is also expensive. I bought a boat that was provided to a pro as advertisement for a dealer. The price was reasonable but the additional equipment needed for family use was salty. Going to boat shows was the best way for me to see various boats and their capabilities. Also the best way to see what my dream boat looks like! Not that I could get it, but I can dream.

Not only does paying more each month build equity it lowers your interest rate along with saving you $$$ overall. As you know that works with any loan. For those that want to see how much doing this can save a person just run 2 amortization charts. One at regular payments one with the extra monthly payment. Also having all your insurance (home, auto, boat etc.) with the same company will qualify one for a discount. Great video!! Happy fishing!!

Cool man thanks for putting it out in a very honest manner. So many people I think just look at the monthly finance payment to judge their budget and not the total cost of owning/operating. Very well done!

Unless you have a large family that likes to go fishing, one doesn't need anything more than a 16.5' aluminum fishing boat. You will need a larger boat if you plan on going out to the Great Lakes, Lake Winnipeg or any other body of water with huge waves. The nice thing about smaller aluminum boat or just aluminum boats in general is that you don't need a large diesel, or a pickup truck. I tow my 16.5' aluminum tiller with a Toyota Highlander. You can find some nice boats that are used and much cheaper than buying brand new.

about the same I was spending when I had my 20ft triton. One thing you forgot to mention was break downs (warranty expired) and Maintenance cost and upkeep on the boat, trailer, and motor. All the reason I sold my boat and now only kayak fish/Tournament fish. Great video and great info on this video! I think you're the only one so far I've seen put this information out.

Boys bass fishing is what you make of it I've been doing it for 30 plus years, I've had had 5 boats in that time first boat an express flat bottom for 7 grand a skeeter strata for 10 grand a ranger 354 for 25 grand a basscat Pantera 2 used for 15 grand and askeeterzx250 used for 20 grand . That's not counting the thousand worth of rods reels and tackle gone threw in all those years. Current boat is in the shop more than I use it and have spent close to five grand on redoing trailer having boat polished and shined new pumps threw out new water pump and now some kinda dam oil leak on my 250 hpdi. I'm not a tournament fisher but just like to bass fish when I can, paying 60 and 70 grand for a bass boat is crazy and I can't believe manufacturers are building and charging so much for one. It's just like everything else to do with outdoors stuff it's expensive and getting more so and for folks that do it for enjoyment are gonna be left out thanks to the big boys with deep pockets. Thay at one time made moderately priced boats for the weekend angler and the family man, but it seems that thay dont care about those type of people anymore. Most dealers won't even come out to talk to you unless you pull up in a 70 grand truck.

I liked that you said your boat was in the shop more than you use it...good honest comment. That was why i went new...stinks it cost so much...but it aint the deep pockets of people buying....things naturally inflate over time as a result of other economic factors...salaries and component cost....cost are the costs i just go with it same with a lambo or ferrari...if i truly wanted one i would get one...but i cant afford that!

Something people should be aware of is the cost of property insurance if the state they live charges yearly tax. For that brand new skeeter it would be about 1800.00 for the first year and by the 10th year of ownership it would drop to 500.00 per year.

"Hey buddy, take me fishing on your boat, (pick me up and drop me off at my door), what did you bring to eat/drink?, aww man I don't have those kind of lures/bait, let me borrow one, ($10.00 now stuck in a tree), then complains about the "big fish" you DIDN'T find that day, and doesn't even offer to help with the expense... because you know... you own a boat, so you must be rich... I bought my first boat new in 1994. I really wanted a glass boat but could not afford it then (top of the line glass then was going for 28k) I settled for aluminum for 13k. Looking at glass prices today(70k), sometimes I regret not getting the glass in 1994.

Pro tip: if you put gas in your diesel pickup, it will cost you more than the price of the tank of fuel to fix it. Don’t do that, gasoline and diesel fuel are not the same thing. 4 additional tanks of fuel per month for the truck is a lot of extra fuel pulling a bass boat, definitely getting your time in on the boat.

Ran across one of your videos again good info although I don't finance I told you about the skeeter I bought cash money. I do need to shop for insurance for it though and I rarely ever spend a $100 to go fishing but I could care less to fish tournaments and get into racing other boats on lake fork to throw a worm at the same fish every 5 minutes just to burn off and watch another boat do the same thing. Fishing shouldn't cost everyone a mortgage to get into it every month it's all about how you handle it being simple has always worked.

Here's my boat story. 4 years ago I find a 01 Triton TR21 with just over 100 hours on the Mercury 225efi. $13,500 what a bargain. Garage kept looks brand new. My kid college bass fishes. 1st tournament the trolling motor craps out in practice. Run to Bass Pro, $1000. 1st day of tournament lower unit blows up, mechanic says casting flaw in pinion gear caused it, $2900. 13 months later lower unit blows up again, mechanic doesn't know what caused it. Put SEI lower on(big mistake) put 3 on in 1 year, finally get refunded from SEI(very hard to do). Put new OEM lower back on $2900. 1 month later(200 hours on motor, crank shaft broke) new power head and labor, $6000. 13 months later, motor out of warranty by 1 month, sticks the #6 piston(rings broke). I say piss on it I'm not spending another $6000 on an out dated motor. Brand new 250 Pro XS, $18,000, but at least I have a 5 year warranty. I have owned 6 boats and never experienced anything like this last one, but hey, at least the kid gets to college bass fish, lol. It's kind of like paying double for college tuition.

I guess you meant the cost of tournament fishing. We both bought Skeeters at about the same time. I suspect we fish the same amount of time. However your cost is enough to make any normal person fish from the bank. So the true cost between a tournament trail and a weekend hobby is night and day. Nothing wrong with that you earned and worked hard to be able to do this. Insurance differs from company to coverages to state. I'm with State Auto at $560 a year. $250 deductible and no short cuts in coverage. Mine even has road damage in case the trailer can not be towed. Fishing three days a week my cost for everything is around $500 a month. The only extras you have that I don't have is tournament fees and hotel. However those difference are what you would expect between a tournament and normal everyday fisherman. Hey good luck and I wish you success. I am very excited for you that you can do the things you are doing. You earned that right by hard work.

John Oleskey very good comment are your lakes local? I have to haul 40 mins minimum to get to my nearest fish able body of water.....what is your payment?....im curious how your operating expense is so low? If you paid all cash I would say you are losing money that would need to be depreciated and the loss of what your money could have earned is also a loss....are you only using the trolling motor?.....I'm a normal person, I just track things very closely for business purposes. Thanks for the comment bud!

@@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors I fish the Yough about a 45 min drive, Raytown just over a hour, 10 mile on the Mon about an little over an hour. Then the Loyalhanna about 45 mins. My problem is getting fresh gas in the boat tanks. Neither lake have long runs. Well maybe Raystown does. I spend much,more time fishing than running, but I guess that comes with knowing the lakes. I don't have to map them. Driving is mostly 4 lanes with a Grand Cherokee. Maybe two full tanks a month for the Jeep. However that includes some run around mileage too. My boat cost half of what you paid with 200hrs on the motor. And I have the fx20 but even used you would never know if. Again that is a choice neither is wrong. Remember I'm not earning a living fishing. So no tax breaks etc. Could I have made more investing and borrowing? Maybe over the past year. Let's just say the small amount of return on that money is not worth the worry. So where did my money come from? You don't want it the way I got mine. AFLACK, my wife has breast cancer. In fact my boat is redone in pink and special decals for her. But the point is I still would not tie up a loan on a non investment that drops like a rock. Make a trip up I will teach you how to fish deep water lakes.

You know what though......Sliding into the water and going out on the ocean with friends for a day of high fives and fish is a great feeling Can't put a price on that. I get tired of having to answer to people everyday. You don't have to worry about turn signals, stop lights, traffic, lanes, etc. You just push the throttle forward and go. My total monthly cost to own my 2018 center console is about $600. That's including storage unlike him. You don't have to buy a 70k boat to get on the water in a nice boat. My fastest accumulating expense is gas for the truck. If you get a new motor, it'll be incredibly efficient.

My advice. 1. Buy a boat you can pay off in cash on day one. No payments. 2. Get a boat with low hours 3. Only get what you can afford comfortably THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS TO STRETCH YOUR BUDGET TO BUY A LARGE BOAT THAT IS WORN OUT! You gotta keep fishing fun and the way to do that is to buy a boat that doesn't put a dent in your finances and one that is low hours so it has less problems. Even with brand new boats you will have a lot of maintenance and upkeep, so the last thing your want is a worn out boat with problems. I tell a lot of my friends who want to get into fishing to buy a large stable aluminum jon boat and slap on a brand new outboard and trolling motor. You'll have a simplistic worry free boat that you can fish for the next 5-10 years easily with no problems. That gives you time try out the sport, purchase more rods and reels, and save for your next big boat in the future if you decide to get one. If you have a bigger budget I would recommend a Ranger RT188 or similar style boat that you can get new in the mid 20's. Great boats that do damn near everything that a larger fiberglass boat does. TLDR: Spend more time fishing and less time trying to pay off your boat.

somebody asked the question i was thinking . I'M not hating mind you , i'm glad you can afford something that you want and do something you love to do . But , how do you afford all of this , you sir are talking alot of money not only that but taking time off work to travel and fish tournaments , which cost a alot of money . Where can i apply to work where you work ? I work as a paramedic making around 45, 000 dollars a year before taxes and there is no way i could afford a boat nowhere close to what you have plus i work 24 hour shifts with 2 days off so i would'nt have time to use a 115,000 dollar boat . So with all that being said , trickle down economics are not working for the lower class , if you have the money like this guy seems to have enjoy and the poor fishermen like myself will wave at you from the shore and think , where do they get their money and what am i doing wrong ?

Good video. How many people thought it would cost $1,200 to $1,500 per month to operate? That is some people's mortgage payment. If you have mechanical issues, that's when it gets really expensive. You thought your monthly car payment was expensive huh? Now you know why they call boats money pits. They are not easy to sell and rarely hold their value...in fact you will lose thousands on a mint condition boat. Nothing about a boat is cheap. They are luxury items and about the worst financial investment you can make. And get this, when you drive around in a 50K to 80K bass boat, you are absolutely terrified of scratching it...which takes the fun out of it. That's why it's best to buy a smaller boat...like a Ranger Z185 with 150hp for 35K. It's all most need and still gives you high quality at an affordable price.

@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
well man everyones costs are gonna be different. Area codes matter too, how far you trailer the boat matters. people often neglect simple things that are associated with ownership. Cut costs where you can, buy a cheaper boat....but you can't say a 55k-80k boat payment is $140....and pros will spend $100 on oil for two strokes......So its not way off for me....for you yes....but for anyone looking to get into the same caliber of boat and do everything I do (finance/tournament/etc) thats what its gonna run.
@ericulry4743
@ericulry4743 6 жыл бұрын
Beyond The Bounds it is very true! I think that it definitely depends where you fish. For me I live right by 4 nice lakes so I don't have to go too far. As far as tournaments go, travel costs definitely add up but don't let the number of a tournament angler deter you from getting a boat if you are planning on just recreational fishing.
@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Okay well let people know here cuz they read the comments. How much did your boat cost? how far of runs on the motor do you make? how many times a week do you fish it? i'm sure with your close proximity you can use the big motor less? If you paid cash for it depreciate that out over the ownership of the boat and add that to the monthly total. These are the simple things people don't understand about finance and the ownership of boats at different levels. The guy who owns and finances a ranger and competes in COSTA events is gonna say he wishes boat ownership cost $1200.
@ericulry4743
@ericulry4743 6 жыл бұрын
Beyond The Bounds very true man. Well I bought a 96 charger for 9000 cash. I don't think that the cost of the boat would go into the cost of running one though. When I fish I drive maybe 30 minutes on average and the usage of the big motor depends on where the wind is blowing, time of year, etc. I fish about twice a week so I'd estimate 100 bucks a month in truck gas, about the half of that for the boat running between 3 and 10 miles a trip. So $150 bucks plus oil costs would be roughly $165 a month for gas and oil. Storing a boat at about $80 bucks for indoor no heat with electric. Then you just have to add in winterizing and the oh shit fund adds maybe 40 a month. I'd say just under $300 a month without tournaments. More if I include my FLW tournaments.
