the art of guitar taught me this and helped me become real good at AH's,but he only discovered it by accident,using it like this in a controlled way as a technique is pretty cool

This was actually one of the first guitar lessons my teacher taught me. He is an insane guitarist, but we parted ways after a year, but that year was very much game-changing to me. Glad to hear reassurance about what he taught me. Just a fun memory that popped into my head. Thanks for that!

I couldn't really choke up on the pick, instead I'll hold it with my thumb and middle finger and place my index finger in front and use those together for the same effect

I still haven't mastered the thumb pinch. I use my ring finger for my pinches.

If I never had to do a pinch harmonic again I think I’d be a happy man. Honestly might try doing it this way just because I hate them so much looool. I skip over them in every song. I know how to do them I just don’t like to.

Dude so I've been playing for a while but I'm now sitting down and learning the actual stuff and not just learning songs from tabs and this is helpful for someone like me who does not have an affinity towards music what's soever

This is one of the reasons guitar is so helpful to demonstrate physics. Harmonics resonate at the frequencies they do because of how the the strings (and therefore frequencies) are divided, multiplying the frequency (same with regular pitches), and having something that can demonstrate that this easily is so helpful as a teacher

Thats how i taught myself to do it. Its just like a normal harmonic but with no frets.

That's basically what I do for finger-style pinch harmonic technique, I pluck it with my index finger while lightly touching it with my thumb immediately after, it's all one motion, I don't have this technique perfected yet though

And... you gotta find that sweet spot on the guitar.

Imagine the fretboard extending over the body of the guitar.

I saw a short on how-to do pinch harmonics. I tried and could do it effortlessly. I had never done it before. Then I mastered the technique in one hour after I got my first harmonic. I kept doing it until I could do it at will. I don't why would anyone struggle with it. its easy as hell. Barre chords are easy too. People bitch about them a lot too. On acoustic it tires your hand twice as faster but playing them for a three minute song is not hard.

I've seen someone doing this before, in fact. When I started playing electric guitar, I had a friend who already knew the basics of acoustic guitar but was also picking an electric for the first time at the same time as I was. When I found out about pinch harmonics (probably when learning "Psychosocial" lol) and was practicing it, I showed the technique to him but he couldn't do it at all with his pick and thumb at the same time, so, while experimenting, he came with the same strategy you're showing here: Pick the note and then gently place a finger over the string to achieve the sound of the pinch harmonic. We were both blown away by it lol

I remember first learning pinch harmonics and since I couldn’t get my thumb to hit the sweet spots yet in order to actually activate the harmonics, I would just pick down, and lightly move the tip of the pick back upward to use it to tap against the string to activate the harmonics. It kinda works but it sounds like shit so I brute forced the legitimate technique and finally got it right lol

Hey so I was wondering do pinch harmonics work in the same way as artificial harmonics? Like ever fret up on your fretting hand you have to move a fret up on the picking hand?

Is there an exercise or something that I can do to be able to play without needing to look at the fret board because I’m really bad at shifting from like the 2nd fret all the way to the 7th fret without looking and it’s really annoying when it’s on a song because then I’m constantly looking up and down.

Figured this out a while ago, and started doing a similar technique on my Bass, where instead i tap where the harmonic starts. Can get some crazy squeals on it, or do some really beautiful harmonies when doing it through a scale
