That's half-true, I think. We've learned that today's society does not patronize those who are willing to damage their own families on a global stage. They generally won't patronize those caught lying or caught grossly exaggerating, either. Society in this way can set healthy boundaries and teach lessons. I think the problem that Harry had was trying to make the public his "therapist". He saw his mother try it, and it was successful for her in terms of great public support. But this is the age of social media. If Diana did the same today, people would confront her about traumatizing her children by airing her husband's sins to the world. They would ask how she could expose them to gossip, expose them to taunting in school, and to risk fracturing an emotional bond with their father. They would question why she was putting her emotional needs first, at the expense of her children's. Voices would bring tough love, as well as support, hate, craziness from the human family. Harry is receiving the overwhelming realities of the world that she did not. And hopefully, he'll come to accept responsibility for inviting it all in.

Not just a prince. Would you go to a priest that was a sinner, or tune into a newsreader that didn't read the news, watch a footballer that played tennis instead of football? It's fine if a person wants to change their position in life. Harry, however, wanted to be treated and rewarded with the gilded gloves with which a prince is treated but doesn't want the role. Not just him but all around the world, you don't get both. The money or the bag? The chicken or the egg? When he chose to step away, that's fine. But to chose to step away and then get ratty because you haven't got a house being kept for you here, staff paid for here, clothes there, security everywhere, and the cherry on top "my father has cut us off financially ", 5 million a year to tide you over! Again, no one pays the newsreader who doesn't read the news. Harry had audacious expectations while simultaneously saying, "I never asked to be a prince, but reward me as if I am one forever more."

It takes a lot of courage to do that and I sense that he genuinely wants to help people by sharing his story. He's definitely helped me. I was silent about my trauma for way too long. When high profile speak out about what they have been through they inspire others to do the same and help us know that we are not the only one. I really admire famous people who use their fame to help others. I recommend the series he did with Oprah called The Me You Can't See for anyone who hasn't seen it. I noticed that Rangan mentioned “friction” in his family. He did not go into detail because he is mature and has wisdom. They worked it out as a family and are closer now. Once betrayal and mistrust takes place within a family, it is often never recovered.

Thank you for saying this. I have been sympathetic to Harry since he left the royal family and I eagerly bought Spare the same week it was released. It almost feels like I read a different book to the one Dr. Mate read. Nothing about the man in Spare says "mentally healthy, an example of someone doing the hard work to overcome struggles and trauma." His worst and pettiest attacks are saved for his brother, who went through exactly the same trauma Harry did and who is not responsible (neither is Harry) for the dysfunctional family he comes from. When he had the chance to show grace in the book, he did not. When he had the chance to take responsibility for some of his mistakes, he shied away. Honestly the book made me dislike him. Working through trauma is one thing. Blaming everyone around you (for money, no less) is another. I'm genuinely shocked that Gabor Mate, whose work I feel is very important, seems to have bought it so thoroughly. If others had treated Harry the way he treats them in Spare, everyone would see how terrible it is. But because he's Prince Harry it's OK? I don't get it.

I agree with you. Harry is extremely self-entitled and shows arrested development; he’s making a public spectacle of airing his dirty laundry. It’s sad that his father didn’t give him enough attention to get him some mental health help when he needed it as a teen, but Harry is almost a middle-aged man, there’s no excuse at this point for him to behave so immaturely at this point.

A lot of people have trauma but it’s how we deal with it that matters. We can either learn from it and become stronger or we can forever play the victim… Edit: I respect that people have differing opinions, but if you disagree then you can choose to scroll on and comment elsewhere. I don’t think it’s necessary to get personal. After all, you don’t know me or my background. Just to clarify my original comment… I don’t talk about myself often, but I’m about the same age as Harry and I suffer from PTSD from my childhood (both my parents are narcs, histrionic too). My trauma was the result of events like the suicide of my biological father and constant physical and psychological abuse until I left home at the age of 18, so it’s safe to say that I understand triggers, trauma and the fight or flight response. I’ve been in and out of different therapies over the course of my life and I’ve also seen how my siblings live with their own trauma and the different paths we’ve all taken. So my comment was based on my personal experiences, it’s also my opinion, so as I said earlier, you can choose just to scroll on without responding.

I don’t follow stories about Harry, but I do read and listen to Gabor Mate. I can certainly relate to the difficulties that a family member can experience when they stop participating in the dysfunction. It is very difficult to remain connected to people who are stuck in denial and refuse to recognise the ‘love’ they are offering is actually very damaging. If you care for a person, you make an effort to understand them. When you understand that your treatment of them is harmful, you make a commitment to change. When you prioritise your love for a person, it is easy to change. But when you have other, higher priorities, you will sacrifice the person who is highlighting the problem. You will sacrifice them and you will claim that they are the problem. Harry is a scapegoat. The scapegoat is not the problem. The problem is the problem.

Whether or not publicising his pain is helping Harry heal is something that only time will tell. The one thing we can say about members of the Royal Family - with all its quirks - is that they have lived very long lives, and generally over a period of time found themselves. If stress and lack of love kills, it is certainly not killing any of them. It is to be seen whether Harry achieves the same outcome or he crashes and burns. My life experience tells me that trying to resolve trauma in public only exacerbates it and turns it into entertainment. Whether Dr Mate helped Harry or turned him into a spectacle is something that we will only know in 10 years time.

I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to grow up in an institution like the RF. I would say a rarefied environment like that lacked expressions of love and warmth. The focus is more on public duty and service. If the RF and the people around them identified with their roles very seriously, it would be a very surreal experience to deal with so much formality, protocol, masks and personas. I’d say “gilded cage” is apt. But also utterly surreal like puppets in a theatre On top of that the relationship with the public is disturbing from my point of view, where they are treated as Icons- venerated and separate to, but also a sense of ownership by, the general public. People projecting their own selves, ideals, devotion and love or hate on to them all the time. I’m saying it’s disturbing to be having that kind of experience and relationship with the world I’m obviously speaking from my perspective as an outsider. Imagine being born into that, it’s all normalised. But you’d know something wasn’t right, something is missing. How can any of us judge Harry really, we have no idea. It was/is a different reality he was born into A lot of anger and venom is directed at him for speaking out against his family. I haven’t followed this much or read his book…but I’ve read a fair few comments here and elsewhere about Harry hurting his “loving family”. This is quite complex as there seems to be a lot of projection and idealisation going because they are the/ “our” ROYAL family. “How dare he!?” Not saying they weren’t loving in the best way they could, you could actually say that about every family. But of course they nonetheless can cause a huge amount of damage and pass on generational trauma. I understand I’m going to be lacking nuance about the queen saying they can’t be half in/ half out. However that is also a common pattern in dysfunctional families. You will be scapegoated and cut off if you don’t tow the family line. If Harry’s behaviour is a little worrying at times as I’ve heard people say, I wouldn’t be surprised. I’d say he’s having a colossal culture shock having so much freedom, and adjusting to “normal” life as a civilian. He’s also had a monumental loss with being effectively cut off from his family and the RF institution. He could be having an identity crisis, as anyone would who has gone though so much change. Especially difficult in a public facing role where there is so much judgment directed at him. I’d say give him some time and he’ll find himself. He’ll gather up his true inner strength and power, beyond anything he had when in the RF. I believe he’s got a VERY big role, yet to be played out. He is an instigator of change. And that is always going to be messy, chaotic and met with resistance, especially so when going against the force of the monarchy. But I do believe ultimately change is inevitable, and also needed. And Harry is still playing a big part in the monarchy, whether he is recognised as a member of it or not. He is really spotlighting the monarchy for our attention. Whether the monarchy will ultimately survive is the question, but it will definitely need to evolve and adapt.

A question I ask adults as well as teenagers is if you could describe in 4 words what it was like growing up as a child in your environment with your caregivers/parents what words would you use to describe your experience? Very eye opening the words that come up. Part of my long drawn out healing (continued) process in understanding my own life with what the environment looked like for me growing up with my parents was not a very loving environment as a child. The world will ask you to ‘be strong’ and after years or carrying on In strength, weakness must take place and tied strings must be cut in the process. I realized the triggers in my life that were repeatedly perpetuating the inflammation taking shape in my body that would become chronic. I eventually became sick and realize that if I don’t continue to remove distractions that effect me negatively out of my life in order to preserve myself for as long as my energy and time left on earth will permit me, my life expectancy will shorten further for the heartache I’ve endured in suffering for in the deck of cards I was dealt. As humans, let us not walk around earth in auto-pilot mode. What we see in others is what we see in our self. Reflections. That is if you consider yourself to be human. Any kind will do.

Beautiful comment. I wish you much success and understanding in your healing process. I'm 72 and had things triggered several years ago about my mother, that I thought were long ago put to rest. I was recently in a women's circle where one of the gals who is my age was sharing the same things coming up for her that she thought she'd dealt with. The psyche allows understanding to come as we're ready for it. 😍

I am so furtune to listen to Gabor Maté on humanity, on childhood, on mental health...and here on Harry and how people's expectations are. To me, it's astonishing how grown-ups depende on glamour and power of king's, queen's, and princesses to represent theire own dignity and country, and point finger with disgust when theire soapbubble collapses. It seems like a hole country is collapsing when a royal member goes his own way. Strange, strange.

I put as much physical touch into my children until they didn’t want it. I have one child who didn’t want to be hugged and today she doesn’t like physical touch even when her husband puts his arm around her. I think some people just don’t need it as much or even like it. I am not one to hug much except my grandchildren. I love them up to bits but they never liked it much either. It’s so dependent on your personal love language and need.

It seems like "Harry" is more important than the rest of us peasants who grew up more emotionally deprived and with hardships much greater than "Prince Harry". Harry has the economic means to have many material posessions and and pay for all the mental health an medical care he will ever need. He's in a position to meet all kinds of people, make friends. and earn millions. I'm a person whose mother abandoned me and my sister as a child, been widowed and divorced and live in low income housing and can't afford the medical and things I need and no one is asking if they can help me so Harry has so many advantages than the majority of us peasants. Harry's not the the only child who lost a parent to violence and didn't receive the emotional support he/she needed. My god there are thousands upon thousands around the world suffering much greater than Harry.

I'm sorry for your trauma. I'm sorry for everyone's trauma. But thankfully, our personal traumas have not been played out in the public eye and compounded by media moguls, whose intrusions into our private lives have compounded and amplified our trauma purely to make money off of us. Then when we dared to say 'enough!' those same media moguls have not gone on to vilify us out of spite. Imagine your story splashed across multiple papers and news headlines, but they are effectively blaming you for all the things that have traumatized you. Then imagine that happening every single day constantly from the day your traumas began. That is what is happening still to Harry. Having a privileged life has effectively amplified his trauma, not protected him from.

This sad drama we look at it from a another country as whole British nation having a blind eye on emotional mental health issues and childhood trauma. There's no compassion or empathy from Royal family members, public or media to Harry and his family. Harry is a good example of person who went through childhood truma and still suffering mental health issues but try to empower others by his book and interview but it failed. When it comes to Crown no compassion for weak emotions and feelings. You need to be tough and brave. The duty to country come first. They forget Royal family humans with feelings. They need to have strict Occupational Health & Safety policies for Royal family on mental health issues as Public Servants. They are working royals should allowed to have stress leave. Yes trauma is trauma but there is no doubt and enough stats to show that lack of financial stabiltiy, access to decent healthcare, housing etc and the stresses of poverty are another compounded factor in any trauma. Yes Harry experienced traums as Gabor described and also the particualr traums of being in the limelight and under scrutiny which is in itself a trauma of a kind but he aslo has access to wealth and help that is totally beyond most people. Harry's circumstances are so rare and unique that for most of us it is almost unrelatable other than relating to a parent dying or unhappy marriage or dysfucntional family and lies etc.But Harrys's circumstances are so far from most peoples lives and the soliders he worked with and is supposed to be reoresenting have barely had access to housing and MH treatment.the maount of soliders who die by suicide is higher than those killed in battle. Maybe Harry needs to talk more about those he was supposed to be representing in his charity work and less about himself or if only to show how he is able to relate. It hs become a media cricus now and totally about him.
