This was so informative. I’d been struggling over what my hair needs for years. And stylists have told me curly hair needs moisture. So I went all moisture. But my hair was frizzy, breaking and not holding curl. So I kept changing product lines looking for the one that worked for my hair. Finally I’d done a rice water rinse and my curls looked better. Now I’m incorporating protein in my hair regularly-weekly at first, then stretching the treatments out. And these are light treatments (protein ingredients are halfway through the ingredients list). Thank you for this video.

That's a great way to explain it! I've noticed most people - including myself - that say their hair loves protein, also have hair that gets easily over moisturized. I've noticed my hair seems to have no limit on how many protein stylers I put on it - but that's what balances my own hair personally. I use a moisturizing conditioner followed by protein stylers.

Just like my hair! That's your balance and it's great that you figured it out. And yeah, that's a good observation about people with hair that gets easily over moisturized. They just need less moisture.

@@HolisticEnchilada Yes i have very similar hair as you! Roughly tge sane length, Fine, low-ish density. Only real difference is my hair is more in the medium porosity range. It's hard to find other people with fine, low density, loose curls that also have some length, most on here have above the shoulder hair - and I feel like that does matter, because we're going to be more easily weighed down due to length.

First off all, your videos are wonderful, and your hair looks great. However, If the symptoms of protein overload and moisture overload are the same, how on earth do you know what to do? My hair doesn’t stretch at all, but it also doesn’t break. When I leave the hair salon, my girls look great. For about two days. Then it’s a mess. I have been doing this for two years, I have dozens of products, I can’t afford this anymore. Everyone says to be patient, but my patience is gone. For any curlies out there who have figured this out, congratulations!personally, I give up.

Your hair is probably balanced when it comes to moisture protein and are having a problem with something else. Buildup, weather changes, hard water, humectants, product amount, improper application... I know it's hard to be patient, especially after so long. I wish you luck! ❤

Is it safe to say that in order to find out what is causing the symptoms of your hair is to look at the product ingredients that you are using. If you are getting frizzy hair but your products contain no protein then it’s safe to say you need to incorporate protein. If you have frizzy hair and you look at the ingredients in your products and they have lots of proteins, then most likely you’re not incorporating enough moisture. As Delilah said, we need a balance. Or at least we will learn with trial, that your hair does best with either, for example, 60%moisture and 40% protein. Or vice versa for someone else. I’ve been logging my wash days for some time now, and documenting what products I used, a treatment I may have done, and then comment on the results. This is going to take more time. I’m 56 years old. Do you really think I want to do this? Lol. But it’s helping! Good luck!

Thanks for this video. I get confused with protein moisture balance. I’ve read online that a lack of elasticity is also a sign of a lack of protein. How do I know if my hair doesn’t stretch because it’s lacking moisture or protein or both? My hair is fine and doesn’t tolerate moisture. If I use a leave in my curls don’t hold very well and my hair gets curlier over the days following as the moisture is released. Thanks

If it's not stretching it needs moisture. If it stretches too much you need to cut back on moisture. I would do reverse washing with a deep conditioner before shampoo, then rinse out regular lightweight conditioner, and style. This way you get moisture in but not too much. Use a deep conditioner that has some protein in it.

@@HolisticEnchilada thank you replying back. Actually, I believe my hair is not acting right because it’s stripped of its natural oils and moisture from a sulfate shampoo I used so I don’t think I can do that again. I have type 4 coily hair which is really fragile and I’m trying to replenish the moisture in my strands without using more harsh things.

My hair is low pro 3c, I over did it with rice water and left it on my hair in braids for days at a time and now I have BREAKAGAE. My hair snaps easily so I would say it is brittle, I have been deep conditioning, avoiding proteins like the plague and doing apple cider/clay masks but I am still getting breakage 2 months on. Any suggestions would be soooooooo appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

I would focus on hydrating methods like the bowl method and wet plopping. Cut out any diy stuff as well. If you don't see progress then consult a stylist.

Are all proteins water soluble and does that mean they rinse out with each use? I bought an organic spray in protein that says it’s water soluble and can be used everyday. I am leery of using everyday. I also use a leave in conditioner.

Help! I think I have had protein overload for 3 weeks! I used an Aphogee 2 Step Treatment ONE TIME so have been trying to clarify and deep condition but just realized my curl cream (Cantu) has a small about of protein :( my hair feels so dry and the highlighted pieces are breaking off.

Sorry to hear! Has it gotten better? I would focus on moisture right now and ditch all protein. Make sure you're using a strong clarifier, something with sulfates.
