The only hate I’ve seen is purely due to people not wanting to actually take the time, adjust settings, and find the right build of the emulators. Even on PC you’re downloading dolphin and adjusting settings, not a plug in play even with a i9 w/rtx4090, why would it be any different on an even less versatile device?

I can see that. I don't have RP4 but I do have Steam Deck and lately I've been ignoring it because every time I turn it on it's gotta do a million updates to all the games I have on it, plus I never take it away from home when I'm only getting a couple hours of game play on AAA titles. I have my computer, I can just use that to play Steam games. I would take the RP4 with me wherever I went though since it looks more portable.

@@Cyko.. Yeah I think it's due to portability. It's so small and much cheaper than steam deck that I don't mind taking it out of the house. Plus the steam deck is rather big and I don't want to drop and break that pricey thing. I do wish the rp4 had a bigger screen with at least 1080p resolution.

Dude this thing is awesome. I have been holding out since SNES capable handhelds. This thing is great for GC and high end Android games. The fact it can do PS2 and some Switch games is crazy

The retroid 2s is still my favourite handheld from them. This looks like a great device but I really want a decent 4:3 ratio screen.

I wish they could have crammed a 4.5 inch screen in there though. like I have the RG405m but the sticks kind of suck. I do like the larger screen though so if those two had a baby I'd buy it in an instant. all these 16:9 handhelds are just slightly too big for my liking and IMO 4:3 just makes way more sense.

My biggest pro for the RP4P is that I can actually put it in my pocket and it's no different than a phone. At home, I throw the grip on or dock it to the tv since it has 1080p output from the usbc charging port, and charges as it casts. It covers all bases for me and that means everything.

RP4Pro but with OLED screen would be my perfect console. Still the best choice for the retro gaming if we talking about modern screens. Can't wait to see RP5 or perhaps even RP Flip 2

They need to utilize samsung Amoled screens, it's much cheaper than oled and they have lots of old screens retroid could bum off of lol

Genuinely tempted to sell my RP Flip for the Pocket 4 Pro. Its so much more practical for PS2, and the pocketability might honestly be better.

I already got a steam deck oled so I ended up getting the anbernic rg35xx plus which is perfect for me. I can’t justify getting this when the deck already does this and more. But for its price for someone wanting ps2 emulation this would be the best option

I got an RP3 for Christmas and i adore it. The display is super nice. Can play everything up to an including dreamcast. That's good enough for me for now. My modded original xbox has been my retro emulation machine for 20 years. Had to go portable.

My right trigger broke after 1 week of use but I opened mine up and found it was just the spring that broke and replaced it with one on my retro pocket flip. Not ideal but works really well, retroid got back with me asking what was wrong and told them I fixed it but will need a new spring or two, but have not received this and don’t think I will

From what I hear they just send you a whole back with the shoulder buttons attached. When you asked for springs, you probably confused and scared them lol

I got my retroid pocket 4 pro like a day before i went into the hospital for something and i was in there for around 5 days and man am i lucky lol no complaints other than holding it for long makes my right fingers numb after a long while of playing. that being said i recently bought like one of those 3d printed controller grip addons for it and it is now not really a problem anymore and that was my only complaint. the thumbsticks feel SO good uhh it emulates games reallly well. never really had a problem with running most stuff except for a couple games like battlefield 2 on ps2. but with some optimization it isn't too bad. also i love how loud the speakers are. My RP4 is literally my designated alarm clock now too. lol. nothing but good things here. I absolutely love mine. such a cool device in many aspects.

It can be, but the good news is the Pro rarely needs to be in performance mode to use it.

I've loved setting up the rpr4 as my first emulation device. Could you share what you're set up is for ps2 because I've had issues with a couple games running horribly. It may just be those games but I'm not sure.

For any PS2 games that struggle I play with these settings: Change GPU render OpenGL/Vulkan Change underclock settings 75% and anywhere from mild to maximum

I have a suggestion. Try experimenting with the hardware download mode. Not a lot of games use that function and it's very costly to compute, so it'll give you a big boost. I tend to have it disabled by default because of that.

@ChronikSpartan Thanks for the advice. To be honest, I have no idea what underclocking is or what it does, so I'll try out those settings and see how it works. The two games I've noticed struggling so far are shadows of the Colossus and jack II

@@bobbymiller7242 It lowers the clock speed of the emulated CPU, which makes it easier for your system to emulate. Don't forget what I said about hardware download mode though. It's under graphics settings and you might not even need to underclock if you have it turned off.

What about the left stick location below D-pad? Is it fine as is, or you'd rather have it on top?

Personally i like this placement more, if you’re playing retro, d-pad centric all the way. If it was flipped it would drive me crazy playing anything before n64. Have the rp3+, stick placement even playing n64 and some ps2 didn’t cause me any issues. I think some people just handle the console weird. Like go play on a PSP or 3DS and tell me if that’s comfy. If you think yes, this is fine

Whenever your device has the power to play Gamecube and Dreamcast, your joystick should be up top. If you disagree, your device is overpowered for your needs. This is the reason that most pc handhelds have the joystick up top like a traditional modern game controller.

Price and portability are the main reasons to choose the 2s over the 4 pro. Some people also don't care about the extra power and only want to play old consoles on it, so they don't justify the 4 pro.

I was going to get one of these until I heard about the shoulder buttons breaking and the loud fan noise and the screen being kind of crappy. PS2 in my pockets would be great though.

The trigger issues have been fixed since February. They are only sending out RP4s with the new backplate on it now, so the chances of you receiving a faulty product are very low. (Besides, Retroid's customer service on their discord is great, so even if you get a faulty piece they will replace it for free within weeks.) Additionally, the ghosting issues with the screen are only apparent when scrolling through white menu screens and you need to be really looking to see it. Finally, the fan is genuinely not that loud. Tech KZfaqrs need to stop exaggerating how loud it is. If the sound of a fan running ruins your gaming experience though then maybe that would be an issue? Either way, I highly recommend getting the RP4 Pro, it is hands down the best priced console with unbelievable power. You definitely wouldn't regret the purchase.

@@debonairfawkes I got the Retroid Pocket 2+ and it was a very good handheld. It was cheap but felt of good quality. Only thing was it took 2 months to get to my door from CHINA. Does the RP4 Pro feel good and how long did it take you to get it? I used 1PX or whatever it is, not DHL, last time.

At the price, you get a pretty damn good screen and system. The Odin 2 is better, but once you're willing to spend more for this level of handheld you might aswell just get the low-end Steam Deck.

maybe if you buy from a 3rd party seller but Retroid doesn't do it because they're against piracy or some nonsense like that (pussies XD) anbernic and Miyoo don't have such reservations but even there the rom sets are kind of shit, like no mario games?! so in the end it's best to "aquire" some roms of your own.....

Im planning on getting the arbernic RG405m, i had gotten the powkiddyx55 and as soon as i updated it thru wifi all the games erased. And it didnt even have as much games either way

The GameCube version of Timesplitters 2 works fine so you can just play that version if the PS2 one doesn't work.

I was considering a rp4 pro but still wanted to play AAA pc games on something lighter and smaller than my legion Go. I ended up winning a bid for a loki max for $390 so I'm all set and just need to install bazzite os .

@@heavenlypath1065 lol what are you talking about this isn't the Loki zero or Loki mini pro this is the loki max with the ryzen 6800U and 16GB of ram at 6400mhz same power as all of the 2022 handhelds ( ayaneo 2 which I use to own ,onexplayer mini pro, aokzoeA1 it's around 10-15% less power then the ally and legion go so triple A games aren't a problem there's plenty of comparisons of the z1 extreme vs the 6800U.

@@heavenlypath1065 why would I buy the ally when I already own a legion go 😂? . I wanted a 2nd handheld for bazzite os that's light and small and can out put around 85% of the z1 extreme's power and the Loki max is the 2nd lightest 6800U device so it checks all the boxes and a steal for $390.

To be honest it's like apples and pears. They both offer different gaming options. Modern Nintendo first party games on the Switch and awesome PS2 and GC emulation on the RP4 Pro. But the build quality and controller inputs are much better on the RP4 Pro. Plus it can emulate some Switch games at a push.

I wish they'd make one with a 4:3 screen like the 2s but a 4.5 inch screen, that would be my perfect handheld. (well even more powerful would be nice but if it can do all ps2/gamecube I care more about form factor) a 16:9 screen just doesn't make sense IMO when 90% of what it runs is 4:3. I mean just look at this video pretty much all the gameplay has black bars taking up useless space.

@@anonymous-cy2ms can't be bothered to patch games and besides 4:3 is how i remember them and it would make the device a bit smalper so it would fit in my pocket better. Basically like a 2s with a 4.5" screen or like a RG405m form factor but with this more powerful chip and better sticks.

I had the exact same problem with the R1 button! The same week I got the 3+ it developed that issue. No click but it still registered the input. If that didn’t happen I would have loved that handheld a lot more.

Android builds can't compete with emulationstation builds as they do all the work for you setting up and updating emulators. You have to do way too much work on android.

There is ES-DE on Android so it's a bit better, but yeah Android in general is a pain in the ass. Hopefully the Android port makes the setup easy enough eventually.

I guess it depends on the kind of person you are too. I enjoy tinkering around with that kind of stuff ( feels like I'm building something) but I can totally understand most people not having an interest in that

ESDE doesn't download emulators so I didnt mention it. It's still a ton of work. Linux builds everything is done for you. I prefer to spend my time messing with the theme and shaders. Plus all saves are in the saves folder not scattered throughout android file system. I bring my saves over from other batocera devices. It's great to get up and running so quickly. I stopped using BigBox because it's just too much work and I would have never known about fantasy consoles and some are pretty good

Nothing missing? Oled and 1080p screen for starters. The RG 556 has those in a similar form factor so why bother with the RP4? The RG 556 is 20 quid or dollars less expensive to boot.

The RG556 just can't compete on power. The screen of course is better on the 556 but it's just a nice extra, not essential in my eyes.

4:10 took the eaxct words out of my mouth when i compair the rp4pro to my 556 i got this and the anbernic 556 and i dont touch the rp4 pro no more the 556 looks so muuch better the oled and the rp4 pro screen is just alitttle to small for me and it litteraly hurts to hold for mor then 20 min the anbernic feeels so good tbh i sometiems just put it in my hands grip it and go to sleep with it thats how comfortable it feeels and biggeer screen on it make games that normally would be huge on a TV better on a hand held the problem with rp4 pro is these are games that used to be played in the living room on a huge TV they arent made to be plaid with tiny phone screen so the 5.5' screen is perfect for that u can read text and the picture is bigger and more normal on the small 4.7 inch screen retro had its just almost impossible to read ur health bar or text on screen kinda ruins older games imo

Everything about the RP4 Pro looks great apart from the screen, especially against the RG556. I’m honestly surprised they stuck with the old 4.7” 750p iPhone screen this time around. For 4:3 retro games it’s just a bit too small for a 16:9 display.

Both screens are too small for big screen content. That's why I hook my rp4pro up to an external screen during travel (13.3 inches) and to the TV in the hotel room. Then an 8bitdo controller and it's perfect). That way the extra power counts as I mainly play GameCube and ps2.
