There is an oft repeated story that Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas, and that, as a result, it is actually illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day anywhere in England.
But, how true is this?
In this video - featuring the irrepressible Colin from finance - you will be spirited back through the foggy mists of time to arrive in England in the early 1640s, when the Puritans are starting to show their displeasure at the antics of their their neighbours to whom Christmas is nothing less than a twelve day binge of feasting, drinking, and general misrule.
We will examine how the Puritans, once they started gaining power in Parliament around this time, began to wage war on the celebration of Christmas, and even went so far as to abolish the festival.
But did they, as is often stated, make eating mince pies illegal?
All will be revealed as we explore the customs and celebrations of a traditional Christmas, and peek into the battle between the puritans and the non puritans, as Christmas Day was fought over.
