I've been mixing on DT1990s for the first time in the past month and have been loving it. I'm curious about your comment about "depth" being a place to pay attention when using headphones and trying to get it right. I understand depth to mean cutting ultra-high freqs (15k-20k) so that sounds layer appropriately and fall behind each other at the right distances, until you arrive at your quietest layer in the dynamic range, is that right? If so, I wonder how depth is more of a challenge in headphones. Is it because some headphones (like mine haha) have a slight brightness to them that obscures the micro-positions in adding depth?

@@LokeyeMC Your headphones are really good with solid flat low end , but like mine have a huge bump at 10k - this is more so that the 4-5k doesn't tire out your ears easily and you can keep the perceived clarity while mixing. You are right because the micro-positions the 0.1 db can play a huge difference when it comes to spacing and placing things in the mix and when you mix on headphones and a little louder, things can be perceived as much closer than it should be. This is the reason why so many people have their kicks sticking out of the mix because you may want more thump - but it's actually your 10k bump that is making the transient stick out more thus clouding your judgement. Same is for example hi hatz - you may feel you've placed them nicely in the mix and you hear the crisp of them - but when you play it back on monitors that have a more flat high end , the hats might sound much more more muddy or just too crispy , depending on the sample of the hats of course. The mid range is the hardest thing to get right on headphones IMO as everything can sound pretty muddy if you listen loudly. It's all about separation in the mix and the biggest advantage monitors have over headphones is just that micro placement that can make or break a mix. Cheers brother

@@nuellebeats1774 The NS10's literally have no low end and that's why the music in the 80's sounded very hollow and reverby. I've referenced tracks on them simply because I know how they sound but I wouldn't recommend it to the beginners

@Streaky Agreed. For a smaller option check out the *Little Labs Monotor* For any of the Planar Magnetic headphones, such as the Audeze LCD-series, people will want to use a good, powerful headphone amp.

@Xstatic In this video, STREAKY suggested *Goodhertz CanOpener Studio* which has controls to add in "Crossfeed", which simulates what you hear when listening to stereo speakers. There are also dedicated headphone amplifiers that have this adjustable "Crossfeed" feature, such as the SPL Phonitor II, and I would also highly recommend the *Little Labs Monotor* headphone amplifier. For any of the Planar Magnetic headphones that STREAKY suggested, such as the AUDEZE LCD-series, a standard headphone output might not have enough voltage and current to drive them properly (especially for the low end), so you'll probably want a standalone headphone amplifier or a DAC/HP amp combo. Fortunately, these newer MM-500, along with the flagship Audeze LCD-5, are very efficient and have a lowish impedance that is easier to drive than previous models.

NO! however they are Standard kit on most correction software. have replaceable cord(mini xlr).And when combined with a decent set of ref Mon's absolutely fit for purpose. Mind you I do very little high end mixing for customers. I do production, editing, composition, voice over, foley and commercials. So most times if it's mixed here its at least mastered out of house if critical . Hope this helps

Sounds like a great combination to me! I use can opener with Sennheiser HD 600's works great. I use sonarworks for analysis and EQ myself, I find sonarworks quite phasy.

@Brain Washer The new Audeze MM-500 are quite efficient at 100dB SPL and also have a lowish 18-ohm impedance, which makes them fairly easy to drive even out of a typical audio interface, laptop, or smartphone headphone jack. Having said that, I would check out the *Little Labs Monotor* which is ultra clean & neutral and includes some other non-standard features that can come in handy for checking your mixes, and definitely has the extra power to properly drive the low end as well as transients/dynamics. To add "Crossfade" (to simulate listening to monitor speakers where both of your ears here some of both the Left & Right channel information), you can use the *Goodhertz CanOpener Studio* that Streaky suggested in this video.

@Brain Washer If you want something portable and inexpensive but EXCELLENT for on the go (or in the studio as well), check out the *Hidzs S9 PRO* USB Dongle DAC/Headphone amp. It will work as a USB audio device and also with iPhone/iPad and Android devices (with the appropriate cable). It has both Single-Ended and Balanced headphone outputs which are both very powerful, especially for its size. It's been tested on an AudioPrecision APX-555 analyzer and is better than the similar but more expensive AudioQuest Dragonfly models...though most people say the Cobalt version and the S9 Pro are very similar/on the same level. There is also the RME ADI-2/-2 FS/PRO that are highly regarded and have an excellent clean/strong headphone output. The original version has AKM AD/DA and the others have the ESS Sabre. Look up the recent Andrew Masters YT channel about Mastering with Headphones. Cheers!

@Samuel LE TONQUEZE The vast majority of headphones that are available are FAR FROM FLAT...or I should say NEUTRAL...and/or far from the more ideal Harman Target Curve...and that includes the DT-880. I've owned the Beyerdynamic DT-880 250-ohm version as well as the original Beyerdynamic T1 Tesla for many years, but I've moved on and gladly sold both of them. These Audeze MM-500 *BLOW* both of those headphones away in every regard. While the DT-880's might be pleasant to listen to, their Spectral Balance is far from ideal and that alone will mask A LOT of important details when trying to evaluate your mix. You really do need to adjust or modify the tonality/spectral balance of nearly every headphone to a more "neutral" target curve...IOW, close to the Harman/JBL headphone Target Curve. Besides trying to achieve a good, well-balanced tonality in the mix, it's important that the headphones (or studio monitors) be Neutral in order to properly place all of the various elements of the mix in regards to Depth & Layering, where even a very small difference in the combination of the Levels and the High-Frequency Roll-off will drastically change the position of the instruments or vocal(s) in 3D space. If you get a chance to demo the Audeze MM-500, they will be a huge revelation coming from the Beyer DT-880! The DT-880's are like having your ears stuffed with cotton compared to the MM-500. ;-) But I did like the overall comfort of the DT-880's, though they would get a bit warm on my ears after a while due to the micro-velour earpads. The MM-500 are very comfortable as well, and not harsh or fatiguing in the high end even though they resolve way more detail than the DT-880.

Bb foto might be right. From Beyerdynamics I only saw DT-150 and DT-770 recommened for mixing among people, and not even Sennheiser HD800, but rather 560 and 600. But they probably still won't be enough on their own anyway.

yes! I struggle with this... neutral headphones sound like no other speaker someone would use as a listener.

But that's also a way to get your ears less fatigued. But... Maybe the ears fatigue is not the issue here but the fact we faster accommodate to the sound on headphones (still, might be the ears fatigued). Anyway, the idea of taking breaks to reset your ears/brain to get fresh perspective on your mix works in my case, that's not invalid approach.

Breaks for fresh perspective should be done CONSTANTLY in every facet of mixing, mastering and producing. So i definitely do agree to that. But the fresh perspective was not really what i was addressing. I have sever tinnitus in both ears and have always found it softer to work with headphones. The last 5 years I have had a Genelec system. And all I can say is that the monitor system, tho fair and giving an accurate representation of the sound, absolutely annihilates my ears, and aggravates my tinnitus, after just a few minutes of louder mixing. And since they are so fair in their frequency response its almost like u wanna turn them up to get INSIDE of the mix. But with headphones you can get inside the mix with out turning the volume up. Id imagine that is because the headphones being closer to the ear. Which is a definite positive for my messed up ears. Ps. I literally wrote this while taking a break from mixing/producing.
