Dark academia is a new favorite genre for me. Just listening to the plot, makes me fume with anger and that means I will add it to my TBR. The direct exposition with info-dump might work me. But the way you explain it, the magic system sounds quite interesting. I think the extremly driven people, tend to be self-absorbed. So, looks like her character is written close to reality. "Blood Over Bright Haven" was one of my favorite reading experiences of 2023. I also re-read "The Sword of Kaigen". If the first time I loved it, this time I absolutelly adored it.

I loved Blood Over Bright Haven as well! The magic system was fascinating and I loved learning it along with Thomil. The sexism and racism were a bit heavy handed but overall another incredible novel by M L Wang!

I just found out she wrote another book! I immediately thought - I wonder if Leslie has read this book...I got as far as "worth the wait". I stopped watching after that because I want to know as little as possible going in. Cya again when I finish it :) Hope all is well!

When a book gets Lezlie's seal of approval, I am buying it immediately. The magic system sounds soooo fascinating and I love a good dark academia and mystery vibe within my fantasy, so this should be right up my alley! Great review 🤩

Thank you!! I liked Thomil WAY morning than Seona...but she was pretty stellar as far as her purpose in this story!

I loved The Sword of Kaigen as I felt Wang's portrayal of her characters was complex and nuanced. Would you say it was the same in that book by the end? I'm very curious as a mainly character-driven reader, though I do find it much more compelling personally when magic systems have actual consequences as well! Thanks for that detailed review, I'll sure pick it up at some point! ☺️

Yes, her character development and growth over the course of events throughout was stunning, just as in Sword of Kaigen. That was the one thing that I found to have in common with SoK - I thought I'd mentioned it, but that might have been in my written review, lol. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it!!
