While painting the first of his 6-panel Woldgate Woods series, David contemplates a reproduction of The Tunnel, the very first of his 6-panel pictures, which he’d made a month earlier. Cut to the Annely Juda Gallery in September where The Tunnel is on display. Now the panels are pushed together to make a single field. For much of that year David had preferred breaking up the panels with a border, like his Polaroid Joiners, to provide an anti-perspectival Cubist disjunction to the image. Exactly the same process of smoothing the image was to happen in the evolution of the multi-camera videos, where the timing of each video screen was altered to produce a more unified time signature.
