The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Yes they should have been inducted years ago. Mark Volman turns 77 in a few weeks and Howard the same age in June and I'd like to see them inducted while they're still living.

The Turtles were among the very best bands which created the distinct "innocent" and "happy" sounds and harmonies associated with the mid-late 60s. We sure could use this music today!

I love the bass in this song. & the whole structure - Part psychedelic rock, part bubble gum, part R&R,. Pure Turtles 1960s happy.

The song becomes legendary right after the second verse, where layer upon layer of music ecstasy is utilized to the max. It was one of those, "Eat your heart out, George Martin!!!" moments of the 60s.

@@brockreynolds870 Definitely better than Ringo. I’ve never understood this. I could say, “Alan Clarke is a way better vocalist than Dwight Yokum”, but what’s the point? Kaplan was a great vocalist for what the Turtles did, but, if I want to hear a ripping and tearing rocker, I’m choosing McCartney or Lennon, hands down. And the Beatles, Lennon and McCartney in particular were great singers. Why the need for Flo and Eddie fanboys to make these comparisons? Because of all the accolades the Beatles got? So what? John and Paul wrote a treasure trove of music to boot…Kalyan on the other hand? Look, I love the Turtles, but can we please dispense with this “He was WAY better than…” It’s adolescent.

the rock and roll hal of fame is silly-- rock and rol was never meant to be in a museum - sure sign of a dead musical form. Any cool bAND WOULD NOT WANT TO BE INDUCTED . Arlo guthire said - i dont knpw where my dad would be tonight if he were alive --- but he wouldnt be here- when he was speaking at the r & r hall of fame- yuck nothing worse then seeing rock and troll being reduced to gee i hope i get on the list

At 1:58 ....... Kaylan sings "Gettin so high"... notice that Ed Sullivan didn't want Jim Morrison to sing "Girl we couldn't get much higher".... but permitted this. Just goes to show that the same lyric wrapped in a less threatening package will go down smooth as chocolate milk. Morrison's sullen, aggressive stage demeanor is what Sullivan was concerned about more than anything, obviously.

@@Copelandvideoessays That was likely done to underscore the event. Manzerek said in an interview that they had agreed to change the lyric but deliberately didn’t. They were supposed to have been banned from appearing again but I think they did appear again performing Touch Me.

@@brendencarlson5220 the Touch Me performance was on Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, they also did Wild Child earlier in the program. I do think it's more likely that Sullivan and crew wanted them to change it to "girl, there's nothing I require" considering the other notable instance of this ("let's spend some time together") fit the rhyme/phrasing of the original.

Ahh flower power still on display right after the summer of love…and weird TV camera moves , this must be 1967…😂! The Turtles were the band the the kids were excited to see including me. Now I excited just get out of bed…😂! Thanks for the video and have a great day!

The members here are: 1.) Howard Kaylan (lead vocals) 2.) Mark Volman (violin, vocals) 3.) Al Nichol (lead guitar) 4.) Jim Pons (bass) 5.) John Barbata (drums) Basically, this is the same lineup of the band from the May 14 performance earlier that year, but without rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker, who had quit a few months after that.

The second and final appearance by the Turtles on the Sullivan show. They also sang a truncated version of "Happy Together" which has also been posted. "She's My Girl" charted at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon; the team that wrote "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be with Me", the two hit records they sang on their first appearance. With this video, all of their performances have now been posted!

The Turtles won battle of the bands contests...and we're one of my all time favorites. I am 73 now, and have used their music in several of my Giff-Ideos. My tribute to clean, professional, and very intriguing music. They are still one of my favorites. Just love em. Giff-Master Originals...Thanks for your musical dedication.

💐One of my personal favourite turtle lineups!💕 They all look so good in this video, too bad they are covered by effects. Mark gets almost no camera attention, which I think is a shame. I love this song so much it was my favourite song at one point (listened to it too much) I love the turtles they are so groovy!!!💐✨

They were on a roll in 1967, bookmarked by "Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "You Know What I Mean" and ended with the hit above in the clip. "She's My Girl" was their last major hit until "Elenore" brought them back in November 1968.

They were just amazing. They had nine top 40 hits and all were classics in my book. There were eight others that did not make the 40 but some should have gotten a better chance. I was 13 in 1967 and they left great musical memories at the time.

He got back a lot many back he was 16 years old when started he was able to sign contract and maided a lot of dumb moved and still won in life helping lots of rock stars like David Bowie and T. rex and frank Zappa

@@recordguy4321 Ehhh, I thought there was a big deal with the Doors singing “You know we couldn’t get much higher” because Sullivan had requested they drop that lyric and Morrison deliberately annunciated it to be a dick. Afterward the producer said, “You’ll never do Sullivan again” to which he responded, “Man, we just did Sullivan.” Of course, they did Sullivan again when “Touch Me” came out and Morrison was all puffy because he was gaining weight and had a baggy shirt on…lol…

For all you true Turtle fans , what makes this performance unique is even though they are singing over the studio track , the awesome ending chorus is not on the record version. I don;t know if it was extended for the show from the studio track or they actually added it live at the end. What are your thoughts and any info about this ? All I know that its' a great ending and should have been on the record version.

These endings were customized for their appearance on the show. They didn't want the usual fade outs it wouldn't sound natural. It had to seem live and it was for Howard. I watched a Paul Revere and the Raiders appearance on Ed Sullivan and it too had some customized endings on Kicks, Him or Me, and Good Thing.

@@davidbussard3371 usually the custom endings on artists fro ed sullivan were just the house band coming in at the end but with fantastic Turtles performance , it seems they sang a extra backing track at the end which would be easy for Flo and Eddy to do since they were great singers.

No, they are probably singing with Ed Sullivan’s orchestra that played live, as was the rule once upon a time.

@@ivangranger8494 Yes it could be true. If you listen to it , all that is added is their extra vocals and a crash symbol and drum and possibly bass. In most cases you can tell its the orchestra but this one is a little tricky when you listen to it.

How did they get away with singing "Gettin' so high" when the doors were banned indefinitely for singing "couldn't get much higher" that same year? In any event, LOVE these guys. Can't explain why I love this song so much-maybe because I came to it late in life (heard it for the first time about 5 years ago) and it hasn't worn out its welcome? Maybe because it's so quirky, switching back and forth between major and minor keys, and 4|4 and 3|4 time? Whatever it is, I could listen to this on a loop for hours. WHEN will they be inducted?

The Stones were told not to sing, Let's spend the NIGHT together." And they didn't. The Doors were told not to sing, "Girl we couldn't get much HIGHER." but they did and were banned from ever being on Ed Sullivan again. But by the time the Turtles, (Who had been on Ed many times before) sang this....well, he sang, "Gettin' so High." 3 times. Groovy.

I've said that many times. You can get away with more if it's wrapped in an innocuous package. Lots of late 60's bubblegum songs are FILLED with filty double entendre, but because the sound of the song and performance arne't threatening or sleazy, then it goes over without people being offended. Morrison's performances are sullen and agggressive, and many times, downright angry. that's why he couldn't get away with stuff.

I personally don't believe that it's lips-synced, both the fact that the vocals are different from the released version and that when Howard moves the mic away from him (especially present at the end) the vocals get fainter. That would be a lot of unnecessary work instead of just doing it live, which is my conviction. Also, I care.

@@LeanderRauff Perhaps his vocal was live and superimposed on pre-recorded backup vocals and instruments. The fact that wasn't the released version doesn't mean it wasn't pre-recorded, though.
