Bit sarcastic and bitter there Eamon. There's never been any trouble at Rossnowlagh. It exists because there's a strong orange tradition in the border counties of Tyrone, Monaghan and Cavan. There's actually been very few parading incidents anywhere over the past few years which is what everyone wants.

The decisive Battle of Aughrim was fought on 12th July 1690 (Julian calendar) and was originally celebrated on the 12th and the Battle of the Boyle was fought on 1st July (Julian calendar) and celebrated on the 1st. The two events were combined at the end of the 1700s after the British switched to the Gregorian calendar and they have been celebrated since on the Twelfth. The first marches took place on 12th in 1796 and have done ever since.

We switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1752. The difference is now 13 days. The day they called 1st July is now 14th.
