These speakers were essentially designed to deal with problems starting to crop up in the 70s and 80s: more gain was demanded and more was produced by diode clipping amps, amps, pedals, rack units, ceramic pickups, which meant some ugly harshness was coming through. The 65s have the wonderful trick of flattening out the harsh peaks and make cream, the 75s are great "live" speakers which saturate very well at high volumes, not so strong in the studio though with somewhat of a hole in the mids. Still, this was the era where live rock was at its' peak and have these workhorses to thank for keeping it palatable and musical

As always, Johan creates a very informative comparison video. Owned many pieces of late 1980s gear with the G12T-75s on board. This video made me re-evaluate their relevance (without the spandex and hair spray). That said, after being schooled by your numerous speaker demos, I recently scored a pair of 1969 Pulsonic G12Ms of my own. They are simply amazing... and without your videos, I would never have known what I was missing. Your loyal fans appreciate you, sir!!!

Thanks for the comparison Johan. I picked up a JCM900 cab last year with G12-75's in it. Great for 80's hard rock tones and reminds me of 80's AC/DC (in a good way), no matter which head I play through it.

Hello, Johan! Hoping all is well! Love the channel! I have a Master Model 50w Mk 2 Lead Red with white piping. I bought it new in 78. Used it alot in club gigs in the 70s, --2000s. I have had some problems over the years but all have been addressed. I have other great sounding amps, but I think it will always be my favorite. Keep up the great and interesting work!

I love them both, and have played both. The G12T-75 gets extra credit for being so underrated and having that unique twang on the low strings, especially in a 4x12.

When talking Celestions it's funny how many people dismiss the gt12-75 outright yet in shootouts it pretty much always wins. If Marshall used a "cool" sticker or painted magnet like a greenback it would have become the holy grail "must have" speaker of the era.

Both are good but I like the extra bite of the 75. Had one for years inside a valvstate and tried it with an Origin 20. In both cases I found the 75 more defined and the same now in your video with the Plexi. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent video. They both sound good. Have used the 75s for many years. Great for pedals as they have such a wide range. They sound slightly brighter, but easily EQed I guess. Never understood why people always want to change them for Greenbacks.

Thank you Johan I couldn't stop looking at the gear around you, I hope the young guys and girls really understsand the why and where these cab's and speakers meant so little back then but today we call it chasing the tone. I had a full stack loaded with G12t's but in 2021 just rying to re-capture those tones takes alot of effort. I'll take a loaded cab with G12-65 for live gigs Please. If I'm jaming at home happy with G12T-65 seems to sound ok at lower studio volume.

Urban legend has it that the vented back G12T-75s were just the last iteration of the G12-65. During mid to late '83 when Marshall transitioned from the G12-65 to the G12M-70, the reaction was so overwhelmingly negative that by '85, Marshall decided to go back to the last last known good speaker, the G12-65. Problem is that openly admitting that the G12M-70 was a stinker would be damaging to Celestion so the decision was made to upgrade the 65's voice coil former from fibreglass to Kapton, effectively raising the power handling to 75 watts and substantiating the new G12T-75 designation, thereby appeasing Marshall and their buyers and protecting the integrity of Celestion's reputation.

I've owned a Mark IV Boogie for a long time, and couldn't really get along with it for the longest time. Turns out it sounds a million times more like what I wanted it to sound like with this old beat up JCM 800 cab I now have with the same model of T75 that's in this video. I think the more scooped nature of the T75 works brilliantly with the insane mid focus of the Mark Series. Classic rock tones, Thrash tones, and almost everything in between.

Nice comparison Johan. I've a stock JCM800 1936 2x12 cab built in 1983 that I've had from new. It has a mixed speaker pairing of a G12T - 75 and the less favoured G12M - 70 but this pair work well together. So I guess blending speakers can lift the overall sound production.

The sweeter mid range of the 65 was really super evident when you played the lead notes on the SG.

I use these blended in a 2x12. 80s T-75 and one of the reissue 65s. They compliment each other well recorded, 65 for high end crunch and definition without getting icepicky and the T-75 for that deep atmospheric midrange. Some say it sounds scooped, but it really isn't. It just has less of the "boxy" mid-mids. The T-75 is louder in the room but it still blends nicely.

I have a JCM800 B can that I bought new in 1983. I hated it until I started down-tuning my guitar. It’s not a Mesa Oversized Rectifier sounding cab but I like using the JCM800 with the Mesa. Yes, my JCM800 cab has the G12-65 speakers

With T75s the T number and the year often is quite crucial as these vary quite a lot. I believe there to be about 4 different versions, where the first ones were essentially G12-65s with a more capable VC former and thus sounds very much like those, yet with a more rounded, less mechanical sound to them - that's before the T received the K damper

The G12-65 sounds small in comparison. The T75 really opens the sound up. Great demo.

Johan, thank you for putting together this comparison--really helpful. Which cabinet models were you using in this video? The 65 sounded woodier and warmer, but you made the 75s sound the best I have ever heard those. Both models were optimized for the higher gain sound of the master volume plexis, which did not sound great through Greenbacks. But your choice of the non-master volume plexi for this demo really let both models shine in a less common context. Personally, I find the 65s (and the similar WGS ET65s) work great with almost any amp (especially Deluxe Reverbs and Dumble style amps), and I love the 65's tonal flexibility with my NMV Bass-spec head. They let the Bass style plexi amps cover more musical styles--even country, and I think they sound much better for clean tones than Greenbacks.

Well, I preferred the 65 as they seem a little sweeter to me. But the 75 was really good as well, especially for the more aggressive playing. It would be interesting to compare with the G12-80. Thanks for a cool comparison!

Most of my Marshals have the 75's great comparison vid..as usual JS. I have master lead combos 50 watts..among others... the sidewinder in the Marshall 75 reverb is heavy..weight wise...2 of those as well...love the era...love my back :)

Johan, I have a speaker combo video suggestion: If you have an original G12T-75 (white label, vented magnet), it sounds absolutely amazing paired with a G12-65 in a 2x12 cab. The first generation G12T-75 adds just enough presence and bass to the cab, and paired with the stronger mids from G12-65 you get the best features of each speaker without them stepping on each other. (I also tried this with a later 90s G12T-75 and they didn't play nice at all- completely different sounding speaker!)

Awesome comparison! I think I prefer the G12T-75, although the 65s also have something to them. Maybe one day I could supply you with one of my modded Marshalls, I think you'd enjoy a Jose Mod :D

They both sound fantastic, I'd just end up getting both!

These two sound remarkably close-I'm listening on good speakers. The 65s have a SLIGHT more present midrange, but it's negligible. I prefer modern T75s to be honest, because they really do well with modern amps that have a lot of low-mids..it helps clean them up and sharpen the focus. That quick transient while still having a healthy amount of deep low-end is also a huge plus

One thing I appreciate about a marshall 4x12 with a full set of 75s is that it's a very predictable setup. I can plug into mine or yours or guitar centers or a crappy backline company, and know that my head is what needs the dialing in. When I need to buy an amp I'll meet someone at a GC and use a set of their 75s, and then when I get back home I know exactly what I'm getting. May not work for everyone but it's worked perfect for me.

The 75 had a more saturated "Slash" feel. The 65 sounded more like a JMP. I think I like them equally as much, great stuff!

With the 75s, I hear the extended lows and more even ctheompression on punchy playing, and the resonant notes in the rung out chords in the end tell story. The 65, is very nice, less bottom, more punch, chimey highs sparkle. The 65 sounds like early ACDC whereas G12T75 is moody, late 70s to mid 80s hardrock /metal

I must say Johan that the 75 had a just gorgeous singing quality in your opening riffs, which I think the 65 was lacking compared...

I own a 65 from 81 but I must admit that I prefer the 75 here... Sounds a little bit more tight and crunchy yet darker.

In my own experience to compare a JCM800 cabinet to a 900 cabinet, my favorite head (model 2061) likes the 900 can with 75’s better but everything else I have likes the 800 cabinet with 65’s better. Interestingly the 900 cab seems to suck the brashness of the 2061 out and it becomes quite balanced

Clearly the 65 pushes the midrange in a very nice way, while the 75 has a scooped EQ. They're both very nice in their own way.

If I hadn't heard both of them in person I would think that they are somewhat close, based on this video. But from my experience, the 65s are creamy (treble roll off) and somewhat nasally in the mids while the 75s are super scooped and bright.

I just got a good deal on a 1960a cab from 1990 with these black with white stripe T75 speakers. I was only 20 year old when this cab was produced. I did not know about this version of T75, let alone if they differ in sound from others. I presume they are UK made? I just got my nephew to play his nu-metal riffs on the Marshall 2525H amp I gave him into the 4x12, while I messed with settings. We were able to get a very good chug tone by boosting with a Tubescreamer. What I was not able to get was a nice lead tone for the Gary Moore or Slash licks he likes to play. There was a nasty frequency leaking through. I had better luck with that amp and higher gain lead tones by using a Laney LT212 with anniversary H30s in it. Usually when he plays for five minutes it turns into an hour if he likes the tone. This time was even longer, so the T75s must have sounded pretty good -- for the Tool, AIC and LOG riffing he was doing at least.

Owning both a (white) jcm800 1960b with 65's and a JCM900 1960b with 75's... I think the success of the 75's is due to how cool it sounds in a room. That said it's a nightmare to record properly in a studio setup imo (especially with high gain tones). You surely did a good job at recording it! The 65 is nice, I like it, it easier to record. Not the best Celestion speaker ever but it has a nice character.

I can't myself. I like the 75s. My first and only 4x12 had them, and I got the cab with the intention of replacing them, but I liked them, so I kept them. By the time I bought the 75s, I'd been told a million times that they sounded bad, but I ended up strongly disagreeing. I like the distinctive 80s twang on the low notes with the 75s. They sounded especially good with my baritone. I have a 65 in a Laney AOR Pro Tube 30 combo, which has a tiny closed-back speaker compartment. I like it OK, but the cabinet doesn't show it at it's best.

I'm hearing more mids (more high-mids as well) in the 65, whilst the 75 is more neutral in that area and has more top end sparkle!

i scored a set of g12t's from the late 80's and they are awesome.. nothing like the ones made these days i guess maybe because it's been broken in for the last 30 + years

What is a modern(in production speaker) replacement for the g12t 75?

I have a pair of the first gen g12T-75s with the vents, how do you think they mix with a Creamback m-65 in a 2X12 cab?

Always hard to tell, even industry standard JCM 900 4x12" with G12T-75 cabs can sound completely different. In fact: Even the four speakers in one cab sound different. Just for myself, the G12-65 are perfect in my Marshall 4140, with my JMP 2204 the 75ers seem to work better.

I've used both and like both. But I prefer the 75. They have a little bit of twang that sounds cool in a hard rock mix. That said, I had 75s in a 4x12 and a 65 in a combo, so it was an unfair comparison. But I can hear the same thing here.

Wow very similar (at least on macbook) Good old stock 75's eh...I always knew they were good :) I have both, currently running the 65's in my 4x12. My tracks, Diggity, Kashmir etc were all done with 75's. The D244T of speakers? lol

This iteration of the 75s is very scooped to my ears, i have these and an earlier iteration as well and the earlier sounds alot more vintage so a comparison between that and a 65 would be cool.

65 is such a good speaker, but nothing beats my 70' pulsonic greenbacks

75's sound better to me than the 65 here but this is one guitar playing. Which one cuts through the mix better? Would like to hear them compared in a "full" band setting.

I have a theory that the G12T-75 sounds better as a 16 Ohm speaker than an 8 Ohm. I play 2 of those in parallel with my Silver Jubilee (8 Ohms), but on one occassion I plugged the amp into the 1x12 open combo of a JCM 800 (16Ohms). The 2 in parallel are not bad, but I felt that with the 16 Ohm open back, this was the way the amp is supposed to sound.

what about the g12 80 marshall cab? i thought that was an 80s cab? and the silver jubilee cab with vintage 30s? i know they're a dime a dozen.. Great vid as always though M8! ; )

The 75 need a LOT of volume to actually sound good. On volume-levels required by most places you play in these days, its impossible to turn up the amp so loud, that they actually sound nice and somewhat balanced, especially in a 4x12. On lower volumes they just sound harsh and very scooped with an unpleasent rumble in the lower range. The 65 do that job a lot better, they sound very good at low volumes. But: I did a test on friday. G12H30-55Hz blackbacks vs G12-65 - the blackbacks just slaughtered the 65 in every possible way

Hi Johan. Some of the early 80's 800 cabs(like mine) have stock Rola g12-80's. But I bet you already knew that didn't you?

I've seen many 800 cabs with G12-80s or G12-100s. Is it correct to assume they have the same H magnet?

As I said last time Johan. The 75 and particularly the 65 are the secret hidden speaker of the gods. Epic all round perfection. Keep your Green backs cream backs and all the other usual suspects these are monsters in any rig. They can handle anything and nail it. Glorious!

Is there any difference between the black label and the white label 75's from the UK???

Fun fact: the G12T-75's actually came out in 85 as a white label. Then to the black and white label you see in this video starting in 1990. The "scooped" sound that everyone associates with the 75's didn't actually happen until early 2000's. The 75's is a rare speaker that has actually changed in the way it sounded 3 times. JCM 800 cabs have had white label and black and white label 75's as well as 65's. The white label and 65s are the best sounding amd most sought after. The black and white ones in this video are still good but they started to change slightly.
