Yakuza 6: The Song of Life and Yakuza: Like a Dragon may seem like they're in a good place at the current point of time, but around each of their launches, there were a myriad of issues surrounding them that either generated uncertainty or controversy. This video aims to explore that side of the games particularly, from the perspective of the fanbase, with my own thoughts slipped in from time to time.

I don’t think the coin locker baby twist is THAT ridiculous, it’s just cultural differences that people don’t understand. Back in 80s and 90s Japan, it was unfortunately very common for babies to be abandoned in lockers so they could be found by other people, but this did lead to a lot of infant deaths. So Sawashiro and Akane putting their babies in lockers at the same time isn’t too ridiculous to me, if anything it’s an interesting coincidence to think about given the time period.

The double locker baby wasn't the part I thought was hokey. It was the "Oh your mentor really was your bio dad the whole time!" schtick. I love the game and story but that is a low part for me. At one point I specifically thought it was cool that they weren't going to do that trope and was disappointed when it turns out that they did. Masato being Sawashiro's kid was a good twist (imo of course) and was enough.

out of all the questionable plot points in LaD/7, I think the coin locker baby plot is the least bad one since it's in reference to the very real problem Japan had with that in the 70s & 80s. I honestly find it interesting since when you look at it, the only reason Arakawa found Masato was because he was crying, and poorly swaddled. Ichiban by comparison was completely quiet because he was actually cared for and wrapped.

Yakuza seperates into duo's pretty readily I've found: the PS2 games, 3 and 6, Judgement and Lost Judgement, 4 and 5, Kurohyo 1 and 2, and Ishin and Kenzan. The only ones that don't are 7, which will likely duo with 8 when that releases, and 0, which is itself a duo of Kiryu and Majima. This doesn't really mean anything, of course, but it's neat to me.

Fun trivia: While Haruka never was the most popular character in the series(in polls),to the point that her main character upgrade in 5 came as a surprise to many, her reputation seemed to completely tank after 6. By the time they had a poll for 3(I think?)possible cameo appearances in Yakuza Online she even ranked behind a gag character.

@@antiproductive4131 I really, really wanted her to actually call him "dad". Just once. To tell him that she will always consider him as his true father. That would mean the world for Kiryu. I can't help but to recall Kazama's final moments dying in peace when Kiryu forgives him and calls him dad. And Nakahara's reaction from Saki calling him dad, too. Of course, the "Uncle Kaz" isn't going anywhere. But in a game that focused about parenthood, it was such the perfect moment for her to say it... For fucks sake, Daigo can do it, but not Haruka?! Closest we got to that was in 5, and yet still was "the man who raised me". Which is also emotional, but, c'mon... Haruka, please... for the hell of it.

@@sausage141 Honestly its just what the team seems to have been doing for a while now. My biggest gripes with 6 was it only being a concluding chapter for kiryu (lol) while leaving other protagonists in the dust, not even mentioning the florist because his presence would break the story in half, and having kiryu basically outright repeat the bonding with a small time family storyline from 3 without so much as even mentioning the ryudo family. I'll definitely cut Haruka some slack here, since there's a very big cultural clash regarding the social media situation. The kind of abuse that tends to be thrown around on it nowadays over in Japan is brutal and has lead to multiple deaths in the past few years. For a very big example of this, look into Hana Kimura's passing in 2020.

I REALLY liked Yakuza Like a Dragon, it was FIRST game of the series I've completed, ironically, it was fun game from start to finish. What I mostly liked about it, what comes to game wise, it's that usually in Jprg's you play as teenager that go on a journey to defeat evil forces, in Yakuza Like a Dragon, you play as an adult man, who's acompanied by other adults people, and NO ONE is annoying teen with edgy attitude that tries to look cool. I've always wanted a jrpg with adult cast of characters in main party, and this game was something I needed so badly.

1:45:28 this is a reference to Dragon quest. In every mainline DQ game you lost 50% of all money you are carrying. In DQ games you have a bank that you can deposit money into so you won’t lose it when dying, the same can be done in Yakuza 7 at ATM’s. For example in DQ if you have 40k gold In the bank and carrying around only 1000 you will only lose 500 when dying instead of 20k Yakuza 7 is the same (though I don’t think it’s 50%).

Haruka leaving in Y6 is her following Kiryu's thematic footsteps, Kiryu constantly leaving behind those he cares about for "what's right" or because he wants his life to be somewhere else. He leaves behind Nishiki and Yumi to take hold of Nishiki's charges in an attempt to "save" him from his own actions. Later he leaves behind Daigo, Majima and the whole Tojo for his children and Haruka. Later he stays in prison to try and keep himself, and them, out of Yakuza based trouble. By the end of the game he outright leaves them behind so they can have peace finally with his "death". She is continuing the loop of Kiryu: running away in an attempt to save those you love. Haruka isn't simply "doing it because social media is mean", she does it as to not ruin their futures by association which is a MUCH bigger deal in Japan than the Western World. The Social Implications of the Orphanage Kids being around her are far more weighted in a Japanese Society than they would be in the West, which they already would be here. That is a crucial peice of context people seem to lose when looking from a western perspective, that things which could be shrugged off or worked through HERE, aren't so simple in a collectivist and extremely socially pressured society like Japan.

The problem is she leaves right after making a whole speech about following your dreams and accepting the family your given. @@domp2729 Thank you, that's something that's always annoyed me about Yakuza 6, even though I love the game. It completely rips apart the ending of Yakuza 5. Haruka could've easily retired from being an idol, and gone back to her family, without announcing that Kiryu is a Yakuza, if she truly was concerned about the public knowing. Just feels like Haruka in Yakuza 6 isn't the same person that we've grown to see for the past 5 games.
@roxas-qc7ud
@roxas-qc7ud Жыл бұрын
@Dom P Think about it like this. in 5 kiryu leaves out of the blue because haruka can follow her dreams. He was gone for a bit of time, and it weighted in him because of it. Then, because Haruka wanted kiryu by his side but didn't realize that he literally thought his way through countless yakuza, that were also got killed and that he almost died because of it. She admits everything in front of everyone and then finds kiryu dying. She was the reason why when kiryu got up, he went to jail, so that's on her conscious. Then she later finds articles, news, and pictures of her and her family that are fully disrespectful and don't give her privacy at all, possibly destroying herself and everyone's future in the process. Now that Haruka feels guilty for making kiryu go to jail and ruining her future and the other kids' future, she does what kiryu does, she sees the best option to run away and hide so everyone around her can be happy. Yes, I get it can be stupid and feel rushed, but the context is there, and it doesn't help they'll basically do this for like the first 2 hours of the game but the context is there even down to haruka walking in kiryu shoes & Haruka giving everyone the best possible outcome. B.T.W I can't stand 6 in almost every way possible, but at the same time, it's the mgs 4 of the series, and I do think some fans will love and some fans can't stand it

@@hunbi1875 You don't get it, because you're arguing a point that I never made. I never said that Yakuza 6 'started the bad decisions' all I said was that Yakuza 6 completely reversed the ending of Yakuza 5, which it did. Of course the ending of Yakuza 5 started the bad decisions at the beginning of Yakuza 6, but I never made that point.

Y6 is my favorite game in the franchise, spin-offs included. Sure, story may get a little bit ridiculous. And sure, the final boss might be underwhelming. But Kiryu is at his best in this game. Most of the characters are amazing (Kiryu's relationship with Hirose's boys is the best). Someya is AMAZING, from his boss battles to his OST (Bloodstained Philosophy is incredible, Destiny is simply the best). Despite being fewer substories, most of them are really good. Minigames are cool. Combat is janky but extremely fun. Onomichi is among my favourite Yakuza locations.

Made me think of Sonic Frontiers after seeing this comment. To me, both of their final bosses were underwhelming, janky controls (Y6 w/ combat and SF w/ Cyberspace) but banging OST, neat choice of characters, and (Spoilers) Fishing was the best thing to have in Frontiers. RCS-Sonic is also at his best w/ Frontiers to the point that this is Sonic Team’s Yakuza 6. Both were sending off something, with RGG sending off Kiryu’s saga while Sonic Team w/ the Meta era to head to the right path. After all it’s their one way dream.

I wasn't aware Tehsnakerer had a second channel. But on a serious note, Y6 is a weird testament that even with things going poorly for the team RGG can still put out a decent product, and Y7 or YLAD became my second favorite in the series by Chapter 2. This video is so good too, I sat through it all straight, plus the editing helps lol.

RIght around the 1 hour mark: Yuta going without Kiryu actually makes perfect sense to me. This is exactly what Kiryu would have done in his younger days had the roles been reversed. Yuta's girlfriend, whom he loved, had a father figure whom his girlfriend honestly could not live without. To a young man with no real life experience, its easier to think that she would get over him (Yuta) faster than she would the death of her father figure (Kiryu). Also, said father figure would be much better (this would be internal thinking here) at helping raise the baby because he both raised Haruka and already runs an orphanage (and thus raised many children), so from what he can see, the father figure would be much better at helping Haruka at raising the child. Yes, from an emotionally rational point of view, Yuta's actions only make sense from a writer's standpoint and seem weak at moving the story forward, however, 1. Remembering even just Yakuza 1-3 and how Kiryu acted (thus would have acted in this same situation) and 2. Once we know the entire story of Yakuza 6 (what Kiryu did at the end here, so kind of proving my point that Yuta and Kiryu would take the same action here) and finally, 3. If we then also forget everything we know about Kiryu and look through Yuta's eyes, this is best and most IRATIONAL (seemingly rational to Yuta) way to do things. Edit: After finishing up the first section and listening to the intermission, you've got a new subscriber with me. Your intermission seems genuine when asking how your audience felt and as I was literally saying out loud to myself "Ok, here comes the 'Better Help' segway" it didn't happen and I must say that is fantastically refreshing to see/hear!

Yakuza 6 is still my favourite story in all the Yakuza games. The themes of fathers and sons and the difficult relationships in the game struck a nerve with me and resonated really well, mostly due to my own relation to my father. As a super fan of Yakuza 5 (my favorite), I also understand how some Yakuza episodes aren't that liked. The Yakuza series are created as episodes that depends on RGG studio's current inspiration. It's not like the MCU where everything is designed from the start. Here, the games are results of brainstorming and direct ideas. Which is something good for me, because that way, they manage to make each episodes passionately and distinct from each other. Even when the plot seems to be all over the place sometimes, you can still feel the passion. And you can also try to understand through real life events, how a Yakuza game that launched "that year", decided to have a given life theme as the essence of the scenario. Here are the exemples according to me : Melancholy (Y0), Fate (Y1/Kiwami), Pride (Y2/Kiwami 2), Family (Y3), Justice (Y4), Aspirations and dreams (Y5), Family again (though I'd argue "Kiryu" is more fitted) (Y6). Yakuza 7/LAD, doesn't shy about the way it was created gameplay-wise. They saw how the public felt about a turn-base joke, and thought how good it actually was. It was in a time where they already had 12 Yakuza games in their pocket. So, a little fresh air was probably needed. And they even managed to justify this in game, with Ichiban's passion for JRPGs. The shape has changed, but it's still a Yakuza game. They just had a spark of inspiration, and decided after some decision-making time to implement it. This is what I love about RGG. They aren't afraid of trying new stuff. Even the Karaoke minigame was a bet. And they took it despite the genre being not at all inclined to it. And I'm pretty sure that, when they will feel that turn-based gameplay is getting old, they will try another playstyle just for the sake of it. That's how this studio is.

GODDAMN DUDE 4 HOURS?! I can't even begin to think about how long this video must have taken to make. Great job man! Though I will say I dont really agree with the complaints about 6's story to be honest, it was great in my eyes, the best right after 0. You can't expect most people, and especially people who are practically still children to act reasonably and in clear judgment 100% of the time. Like sure Yuta and Haruka made dumb decisions but they are still in their early 20s, basically teens, it is just common human error. It especially stands out when nobody complains about this sort of stuff with other characters in the previous games. Like how Majima at age 24 decided to go on a suicide mission to assassinate Dojima simply because that is what Makoto wanted, he stood to gain nothing from it, he was just willing to die cause he loved someone and wanted to protect them. I just find it kind of weird for people to complain about Yuta when stuff like that and Kiryu literally being known for being way too impulsive for his own good gets a pass most of the time cause he is a badass and Yuta isn't by comparison.

Plot point about Haruka and Yuta being dumb: They both were teens(?) when they did it, or at least Haruka was just 19. Young people tend to do stupid things and then justify it with stupid reasons because copium. That's quite realistic, same with Yuta not saying anything because of fear.

A lot of people can stand here and say "well I would've" but when placed in the situation they don't do what they boasted about. I dont think its weird for Yuta to be silent because he feared the worst rather I think its understandable rather than justifiable because of that whole goose chase. Realism is a very broad word to use but works fine in this context. However thats just my take on it.

From what I gathered of the fan discurs at release(both on the western and the japanese side)thats the big probem for many though: Haruka wasnt supposed to be just a dumb teen(as pointed out in the video). She always behaved mature and intelligent way beyond her age(as well as having a unique background that molded her character on certain topics like the value of family). Only Starting with 5 the Yakuza team very much tried to shove her into a "normal teenager" mentality which because of the huge gap in behaviour betrayed expectations. Combined with some other factors, like Haruka representing a daughter-character for many fans, this lead to them feeling she behaved completely out of character and seemed to mentally regress to the point it started to be character assassination. Thats really simplyfing it but that appeared to be the consensus among dissatisfied fans(though, you obviously also had some...eccentrics...crying about purity and such, heh silly japanese).

@@strugglesnuggledslime7040 that is a good point. Haruka was mature for her age, yes but that doesn't protect her from making mistakes, especially if we are talking about a teenager and her first love, so I would say it isn't detrimental to her character but adds another layer. Also lol, purity.

I think they could have easily just had Yuta respond to the question of "why didn't ya wrap ya willy?" With "I did. It broke, apparently". Removes the stupid reason for why he didn't think it was his, and gives him a Legitimate defense for it(He had no idea that it had broken, and thus did not know he had a kid). Also Ichi is amazing. Simultaneously innocent and involved in a criminal Underworld, who managed to not become jaded after [late game spoilers for 7] and legitimately has trust in the people around him to pull him back from the brink, just as he did for some of them.

A damn behemoth of a video, love it. Yakuza 6 was more of a bump in the story tbh. There were good boss fights and story beats, but the core combat was more frustrating than fun. And LaD was a damn good game. Before Lost Judgement I didn't find DE games combat fun, so changing it to turn-based was really nice. And the change to more interpersonal story about the party members fits really nicely and fresh for the series. Since I've played all the mainline games the past 2 years, I might as well just share my take here. No one asked but oh well. Y0: definitely the best entry point. The combat has a lot of variety and easy to pick up. The story is one of the best. K1: since it's based on the 1st game I can't really say bad things about the story, I just think it's a goofy compared to 0. And the combat was an upgrade, like how Doom Eternal's combat was an upgrade to 2016 in terms of depth, difficulty, and speed. K2: my first DE game, so naturally I didn't like the combat. But there were so many side content it was jam-packed. The main story was cool, but still a little goofy too. Y3: I appreciated the orphanage story but the combat was a bit of a struggle. Y4: I really like the more arcade feel to the combat and the freedom in the skill trees. Also it introduces Akiyama, my favorite protagonist from the series, so I hold 4 in high regard. The rubber bullet plot was for sure goofy, but I still think it's less goofy than 5. Y5: One of the best combat imo. The amount of enemies the game made you fight really flaunts how fun the combat in a Yakuza game can be. The plot about dreams is goofy when men in their 40's bring it up all the time, but still has the bad-assery from beginning to end. Y6: Didn't like the combat and the side-content. I think it was a big misoppotunity from RGG. It was still a good game, just not as good as other RGG games. LaD: I was pleasantly surprised how they managed to establish Ichi's story and character within 1 game. The JRPG approach contributes to good progression system and freshness for the series. Judgment: On par with Y4. The story was stretched and dragged on for a bit too long. But the good ol' RGG combat was back. Lost Judgement: now, this is one the best RGG games imo. The combat is crazy flashy, satisfying and has a lot of depth. The story, even longer than J1, was kept coherent throughout and doesn't sway too far from the main case. This series made me fall in love with videogames again after slogging in other AAA games for so long. Every game has something good and something bad to offer, and every one of them has so much story to tell about humans and life, and that makes me appreciate them more.

this may sound weird but yakuza 6 is actually my favorite yakuza game. I played it a PS4 pro so I didn't have much slowdown issues and such. I just love the main cast of 6 as well; the whole hirose family, which wasnt that big, but also onomichi itself which, while also not big, just had that rural feel to it and I just loved it! For me LaD is controversial in a way that... Ichiban has never really learnt how to fight and the fact that he managed to beast Sawashiro IN THE BEGINNING of the game is just ridiculous. And it all continues until the end: he manages to beat Sawashiro again at his full power (he is a freaking master assassin) and Tendo who is a former boxing champion. And then Aoki acts so high and mighty thinking he stands the chance against this beast? No way! Like the combat system itself makes the games narrative a bit... strange? Stretched out? None of his squadmates except maybe Joon-gi Han is a professional fighter. P.S. Kiryu in Y0 is presumed to be a beast and not some nerd playing Dragon Quest series for the majority of his life.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Though I feel like it's very similar to how Kiryu in 0 starts out as complete beast and wipes the floor with Kuze every time he fights him. One of my gripes with 0 is that I would've wished we see more development on the strength aspect for both Kiryu and Majima, but no, they're both gods from the get-go. Another example similar to this is Aizawa in 5. Kiryu and Saejima beat him with ease at first, and then apparently, some time between the beginning and the finale, he trained enough to have like 8 health bars. It's just one of those things IMO.

I think these two games are probably among the best in the series to be honest. I understand people having on Y6 fighting system as it was sorta unpolished/unfinished with the jump to the new engine, but the story, the ending and the overall atmosphere were totally nailed. The game has some of the best pieces of story telling in the series like Kiryu's letter to Daigo. Yakuza 7 shattered my expectations by long miles. It's very fun to play and has got some great characters and pieces as well. I think anybody who hasn't given Y7 a chance because of gameplay style change should as I think they are missing on such a fine game.

I like your statement a lot. Many people were put off by the turn-based combat and wanted the old brawler one back. RGG Studio did a great job with LAD as their first turn-based game.

Ichiban really made me love him over the course of the game. RGG had a lot of balls to switch from action to turn-based and I'm glad it worked out well. If you did the business minigame, the end of the game is canonically "a local business conglomerate CEO having a heated argument with the future president of Japan after beating the shit out of a former boxer."

7 is still grest imo, especially since I'm a jrpg guy, and 6 gave us bloodstained philosophy and destiny, so I think it's good in my book as well, lol

I didn’t like Yakuza 6 because it had the most bare bones version of the dragon engine, the new minigames were interesting but I didn’t like how barren the game felt. The game’s combat felt very unrefined, the drop kick was really strong 😂 and I really didn’t like the story. The game was an important step forward towards refining the Dragon Engine and I loved Kiwami 2 and Judgment and any every other game after this one that used the dragon engine. The combat in those games were so much better and got improved immensely compared to 6.

I admire RGG massive balls for changing the genre but part of me wishes LAD was a beat up with some of the JRPGS mechanics. Let's just say the gameplay is normal beat up but those essence of things are the heat actions. Or just made two playstyles. Beat em up and Turn and based. You choose between those two when you start the game. Anyway aside from that. I genuinely think LAD have one of the best story. The writing, the emotions. Goofy on the outside, drama that is actually interesting on the inside.

I think it’s completely unjustified for not finding your content sooner. The way you present the games is absolutely perfect, because it all easily digestible for new people (who probably dont care for spoilers) and seasoned players who probably missed key points. There’s a certain charm in your video that i have trouble putting into words. The long runtime is an example of how dedicated you are, instead of other simply having summaries or glimpses. Here’s hoping for your bright future.

Yakuza 6 is truly one of the more special titles. It’s one of my favorites in the whole series. Yes, it’s flawed in a few areas. Though I think many fans are so quick to dismiss it due to it’s controversial ending. To me, I found it to be the more logical choice for Kiryu to keep his family protected. It was a sacrifice he was more than willing to make and it should be commended. That’s the kind of character he is. Further on that note, having Kiryu survive AND making the decision to leave is so much more heartbreaking than having him die after the final fight.

Yakuza 6 is the last time I've ever felt "ye, you couldn't make this game on the last gen hardware" and nearly 7 years later, with it's weighty, physics based combat, seemless, detailed interiors and nearly photo-realistic visuals, it's still impressive

For me yakuza 6 and 7 are amongst my favourite, I would actually argue the inverse, the plots to me felt more cohesive than any barring 0. I thought the characters were nuanced and some of the best within the series. There were stakes, in a way that wasn’t necessarily present in the rest of the series. The villains weren’t talked round in the contrived manner we’ve seen in earlier entries. Well Masato was, but with him we got to witness his arc alive in real time, and not through a shoe horned exposition drop. I don’t get the iwami hate. It’s like people don’t want a villain they want an antagonist who could theoretically become Kiryu’s drinking buddy in a very shounen manner if they survived the game’s finale. Iwami was the inverse of kiryu ideologically, he was a man trying to be a monster, while kiryu was a monster trying to be a man. Kiryu valued others above all else, iwami viewed them as disposable. For me iwami and Masato were amongst the top villains in the series. I felt the new environments were distinct and had real personality to them that served to inform the choices of the characters. Fish out of water, in a small town in onomichi, low level yakuza in a town ruled by 3 differing mobs. Gameplay i personally enjoy RPGs so 7 was a refreshing take that they managed to reconcile with Ichiban’s personality in an endearing way. And I found the combat in 6 better than any other barring 0, kiwami and kiwami 2. 3-5 for me had differing degrees of antiquated game play. 3 being borderline unplayable at times. I loathed playing as Saejima, he was so ponderous I found myself just using the charge attack ad nauseam. Now I played 6 on the PC so I never experienced any bugs. Similarly I’ve run cyberpunk on that system and never had a single bug, which I know to be an anomaly, so perhaps I’m having a skewed perception having experienced no performance issues.

The one thing I really don’t like about 6 is the fact that it’s ending is ruined by later games. Kiryu doesn’t definitely leave the Yakuza series as we will be seeing in later games.

I say this, RGG studios really have writing balls to present a daughter figure the players raised since a little child as a literal idol in one game just to show her as a young mother who had sex one time in the sequel. I just imagine how mad some hardcore Haruka fans became after this.
