The Two Munsters 1964

In 1964 TV prime time was very different than today. The Munsters provided a tongue in cheek entertainment even the adults sat back and laughed. Even though it was a big hit there was a mid season replacement of the actress that portrayed Marilyn Munster. Beverly Owen who started portraying Marilyn left the show early to get married. The mid season replacement Pat Priest would step right in and most viewers never caught the change.
The creators of the TV series kept the same theme song and just altered the introduction sequence.

I always preferred Herman coming out last instead of first to greet Lily. There's something about him coming out first that kinda offsets the flow of the credits. Tail ending it with Eddie doesn't give it the same oomph.

Also to be fair, Herman coming from the basement kinda makes sense since he's the "frankensteins monster" character and would be sleeping in the basement and would come out last as he's the "man of the house" type.

@@GenGamesUniverse It also made for a better punchline to have enormous Herman come lurching out of the secret passageway than to have him appear first.

the show was so fun and still is,.....I like the black and white over color any day,.....it sets the mood. ..every actor was so perfect for their role......timeless classic.

Makes sense that Yvonne originally got top billing (Fred and Al were TV stars, but she was a movie star) but that it transitioned to Fred as the series went on.

Technically Fred still had top billing given that it still says Starring Fred Gwynne as Herman in the original intro.

I love both openings. Loved watching the reruns along with the Addams Family.

Loved Pat Priest. I used to watch this as reruns when I was a kid mid 70's My mom had gotten a few things when the show came out and passed on to me. I still have them.

Two classic bits: Herman's dopey grin after kissing Lilly and Eddies response to having his cheeks tweaked. The daggers in his eyes! I am so glad for the changes they made after the pilot. In the pilot, Herman is your every-man. In the series and especially in contrast to Yvonne's Lily, Herman is a bit of a giant dopey kid who almost treats Lily as his mother. It created a different dynamic that set the show off as completely different from The Addams Family. Not to mention the wealth of the Addams family with a live-in butler.

I just love this theme credit but I also love the later the faster version they were both very cute for Halloween it's a perfect cult classic to play for the Halloween season

For some reason I found the 2nd season faster music to be kinda scary for some reason when I was little.

I 100% agree. Especially the season 1 closing credits, which adds some amazing flourishes to the main theme. The season 2 theme is fine, but it's just not as creepy. Still, the theme song remains one of television's best.

@@rcjward you mean with the way Herman virtually explodes through the door as he comes bursting through it? The first time I saw that, I thought it was pretty intimidating until a second or two later when he looks around in that goofy, bashful manner, then shrugs and laughs.

@@danieljackson1272 I was referring more to the deep horns that open the theme (sounds like a baritone horn or tuba) and the rushing wind shaking the trees and the lightning.

I thought this was always so cute lot of fun music and a tube of plan so perfect for Herman it's a classic you never get tired I watch this over and over there's just something about the Munsters they're a lot more better than at The Adams Family has more charm and very classy feeling

@@KCOliver1960 I've never seen Donna Reed but there is no doubt they were parodying that entire genre of shows. They have said as much. The basic set up of Mom at the base of the stairs handing out kisses and lunches is the essence of the Leave it to Beaver intro. Then add Little Eddie / Beav and that move with the baseball bat. Its clear they were spoofing the genre. And let's not forget Eddie's "Gee Pop..." which is straight out of Leave it to Beaver. Again, I'm not saying its not similar to Donna Reed too; I have not seen that. I'm just saying it not JUST THAT.

Season one opening was much better. They also put the title of the episode after it. Season two wasn’t the same, but the shows were better.

After the first pilot was filmed in color with Phoebe (Joan Marshall), it was decided that portrayal was too close to Carolyn Jones as Morticia in the also forthcoming "Addams Family." In came Yvonne De Carlo as Lily. And "Happy" Derman's portrayal of Eddie was too harsh, so they decided on Butch Patrick, who seemed to act more like a regular kid though he was a werewolf.
