A few days ago my university had a meeting with my local Ubisoft studio for a gamedev class. The Ubiisoft producers, while telling the story of some of their creations literally said - and I'm quoting: "It's fine to create content for your audience to move the player, but you have to think first and foremost of how much you spend, and you are greedy, so you have already thought of it while in pre-production. You have thought about how to keep taking money from their pocket, how to keep their attention alive so that they will buy your next expansion." This shit is really ruining the industry. I hope this video will be heard by many and inspire the masses to reject this situation.

If you're an AC fan and want another reason to dislike Ubisoft, please read this: During the development of AC Brotherhood, Ubisoft approached Patrice Desilets (the maker of AC and a worker at UBI since PoP 1) to demand yearly releases for AC since it was selling very well (10m copies AC1 - PoP 3m) Patrice, working in Gaming out of passion and not greed, refused. The result was that they fired him after 20 years of work.Every other AC that came after AC Brotherhood felt "different" or "lacking" something and that's SOUL, that's what it's lacking. Patrice went on to his own studio, working on a spiritual successor to AC called 1666: Amsterdam (there is a YT trailer) but guess what happened, UBI bought his studio and acquired the IP then fired Desilets. It was a threat to AC since it was made by the man who brought their cash cow to life. It took years of legal battle to get the assets back but now they are outdated and UBI has sunk its teeth too deep in AC's neck to change anything about it. AC 3, AC 4, ROGUE, UNITY etc, they're NOT CANON. They're either spin offs or shadows of the true AC. Before you say that it's just an opinion, the ORIGINAL author was fired. Imagine Game Of Thrones without George RR Martin. How would that be? Oh wait no need to imagine, just go watch the show post George's direction. It's being called bad fanfiction, that's what AC post Ezio is, FANFICTION. The original author was ousted, with him went Jasper Kyd, Jade Raymond and so on. Every other AC that came after Rev was an amateur chef trying to replicate the recipe as right possible. Yet they all miss the point, it's not about the profit or the rentability it's about the process, the passion, and that is gone with Desilets. PS: His studio was part of THQ and when they went bankrupt, UBI swept in to get his IP. PPS: OP, if you read this, please make a video about it.

Valhalla broke me even more than oddyssey. Because we thought odyssey was just a misstep but it wasnt it was a shift. Valhalla looks like a free to play mmo (sometimes even worse)

You should really reach out to Jim Sterling to discuss this. They've been talking about this for months, and have refused to let the topic die. In fact addressing it directly on their channel led to many of their videos being removed from recommendations because of the KZfaq algorithm deciding that reporting on sexual assault is not worth promoting.

I just stopped playing Valhalla after I got to England. This is coming from someone who has platinumed every single AC game. Maybe one day they’ll clean up their act in game development as well as their entire company structure.

I have never tought about it like this before, but in a way the entire main story, concept and conflict of Assassin's Creed, reflects the current situation concerning Ubisoft. I first noticed this when replaying AC II and while going through the Auditore crypt in Monteriggioni. One of the qoutes from Dominico, reflecting on the teachings of Dante, goes like this "He taught me that society was set up in such a way as to control it's members, to stop us from thinking, from seeing. Soon, i could look past all the laws and illusions. I understood that mankind was being used by it's rulers, that we, the people, deserve freedom." That literally reads as a satirical critique of Ubisoft's philosophy and actions, written in in such a way as to sound like an old timey text. Im straight up convinced that whoever wrote that whether it was Corey May or some one else, travelled in a freaking time machine to the futere went back and implemented that into the game, just to slam on Ubisoft for what it had become.

I can't believe this, once again you opened my eyes. I already thought that Valhalla was going to be my last AC but this solidifies it. My love for this franchise will always continue but it's time to say farewell. Thank you Lazerzz

I’ve been subscribed for YEARS (it was way back when I still liked ac xD) and still watch just because he is the only one that I can hear this stuff from. It’s so crazy that this crap doesn’t get any attention

I, like you describe it in the video, have also developed a tight relationship with Ubisoft's content. I found AC when in my early years of high school and the whole concept of those first two games got engraved on my impressionable teenage mind, to the point where for my whole teenage years it became my personality. And that's why it truly breaks my heart to see behind the curtain. Because people say "Ubisoft has fallen", but that's not true, it was always rotten, they just manage to keep it under the rug for a long time, but ultimately they tried to grab more than they could carry and ended up making the mess is now. And that's why I totally understand why people don't want to look at that mess. Ubisoft is the industry's golden child, it made all those game in the 2000s that marked the youth of so many, from Rayman to Splinter Cell. Honestly the future seems nebulous to me. Obviously I can't stop playing their games, like I said, some of them not only mean a lot to me (and have *become* a part of me) but to the industry as a whole, so of course I am going to keep playing the games I have, but I will do my best to stop buying their new games anymore. I want to assume that compromise.

Thank goodness someone else addressed this. I think there's another factor to explain why so few were talking about this when the allegations initially came out, they were also buried effectively by a huge amount of high profile game previews, trailers and the like, aided by a large part by much of the mainstream game press.

Dude Ubisoft as a whole is a problem

I now understand why we won't see AC1 remake anytime soon... it just won't sell AC Valhalla level of numbers because AC1 is a core game, something ubisoft won't touch again. Shame...

1. The microtransactions are not predatory as the content is not mandatory to enjoy the game. Nor is it required to complete the game. 2. They aren't going to miss your $60 per game for the sake of critique and not enjoyment. Nor are they going to cry about the people who are threatening to "not stream any Ubisoft games until changes are made." 3. There have been numerous changes, but the main change that needs to take place is the employees need to actually use the resources available, and I mean ALL resources. This includes getting the police involved if need be. 4. Pink News put out a report in which Ubisoft had told them: "In a statement to PinkNews, Ubisoft said: “Over a period of several months, Ubisoft has implemented major changes across its organisation, internal processes and procedures in order to guarantee a safe, inclusive and respectful working environment for all team members.” Those changes include anonymous reporting tools for misconduct, all allegations thoroughly investigated by external experts, global training on appropriate workplace conduct, and a revamp of the code of conduct. New appointments include: Lidwine Sauer as Head of Workplace Culture, Anika Grant as a new Chief People Officer, and Raashi Sikka as a new VP of Global Diversity and Inclusion. Ubisoft added: “These concrete actions demonstrate the profound changes that have taken place at every level of the company. Additional initiatives are underway and are being rolled out over the coming months. We are committed to strengthening our culture and values in the long term, to help ensure every team member at Ubisoft is heard, respected and valued in the workplace.”

Its the circle of gaming companies. A relatively normal size company makes an excellent videogame that creates its own fanbase and elevates the company. The company with now excess money invests in its own business, making more videogames in the process. The now large videogame company has become so corporate that changes the focus from "making money by creating good videogames" into "creating videogames to make vast sums of money". Corporate company hires more and more people and pumps up videogames extremely fast to make more money, while at the same time creating more and more features to, you guessed it, make more money, and making the game appeal to as many people as possible, downgrading the product itself drastically but keeping the decorative exterior (graphics and cosmetics) in the front line. Devs that work in this company begin to hate the companies practices and fuck off to create their own company to make videogames how they want them again. A relatively normal size company makes an excellent videogame that creates its own fanbase and elevates the company...

I 100% agree with you. I was one of the biggest AC fans… But Ubisoft got so greedy. Were it up to me to alter politics, I’d enact legislation to ban many of their practices with massive penalties in the tens of millions. It’s straight up anti-consumer behavior. Artistically speaking… well… It’s like what a fellow assassin once told Ezio, “They sold dignity for coin. Their life will not be mourned.”

It's really sad how low Ubisoft has fallen and how much AC devolved. I used to be so hyped whenever new AC was announced. Now I don't even care anymore. I tried Odyssey and I could take only 20 hours. After that I shut if off and never came back to it. I didn't even bother to buy Valhalla. Ubisoft made a massive mistake with AC. Their greed will be their ultimate downfall. They could have started a brand new IP that focuses on historical open-world games and keep AC what it's supposed to be at the same time. But they decided to ruin it completely. They decided to spit on the most loyal fans who loved the original vision and cared about the work of passionate creators. The same thing with other brands. Prince of Persia is being completely neglected. We haven't seen a new Splinter Cell since 2013. The Division has been a complete letdown. Watch Dogs became just another generic open-world with terrible driving and boring missions. All Ubisoft games start to look alike. They all become mediocre open worlds with generic activities, bad plot, pointless RPG systems that harm gameplay instead of improving it and shit ton of shameless microtransactions. It's really sad to see how the industry is changing for the worse. Rockstar Games also keeps fucking up with how terribly they handle Red Dead Online and how they're milking GTA V instead of making something new. It's an end of an era. I only hope we'll get more great games from other publishers. We can always count on Sony and their blockbusters like God of War, Uncharted, The Last Of Us, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima etc. Btw Ghost of Tsushima is a way better Assassin's Creed game than recent Assassin's Creed games. It's so much fun. Can't wait to see what Sucker Punch can make next with all the money they earned.

I understand your point about the sexual misconduct and I agree except for one thing I think not supporting a game just because of sexual misconduct diminishes the devs and people who are victims that actually put there heart and soul in the game and in the end what will that do? I don’t hate the new games I beat each one and enjoyed them all. However I can’t ignore what you’re saying, the meaning of an assassin creed game is dying. It hurts for me because I fell in love with the games just when they switched it to the RPG format.

Thank you for this video. I used to work at Ubisoft until recently and I confirm they claim they want to change but still cover up management misconduct. I have known victims who reported misconducts and never heard of actions taken after investigations. I left after almost having a burnout due to workload and misconduct.

Really good video. Hope this gains the traction it deserves. One point that isn't often mentioned in these videos is that watering down your game to appeal to mass markets works in the short term but will cost the company in the long run as its core fan base turn against them. If you don't have people to cheer on your product and it becomes known for mediocrity then you won't have a marketable product. It's short term gain for long term pain and it comes from trying to please shareholders. EDIT: This is obviously a totally separate issue on sexual harassment, something that continues to not be taken seriously enough within the industry and community.

Interesting stuff, but it feels kinda weird to go from universally valid critiques about Ubisoft's corrupt management to a more iffy rant about mainstream appeal and... the identity of games like Assassin's Creed? Enabling a hostile and predatory work environment that causes real, serious harm to people under them and... having Assassin's Creed not be assassin-y enough are two vaaastly differing levels of wrong-ness to critique, and the latter feels weirdly out-of-place getting so much focus and attention in a video with such serious subject matter.
