I'm one of the biggest Poatan fans out there and even I would tell ya Jones would more than likely win. Alex has improved a bit in grappling, and has always be great in the clinch and has shown that he certainly has improved in the grappling department since his first few mma fights - so there is that. He firstly demonstrated in both the Jan and Jiri fights that while on the ground he no longer panics the way he did vs Izzy, did a great job defending against subs and ground and pound, and thirdly in both of those fights he did eventually work his way to the feet eventually, however all that being said - that's still not good enough to take on Jones. And the point you made about Gane is spot on. What happened immediately after that loss, everybody almost uniformly began saying Gane was fraud-checked and never that good to begin with. So I def don't wanna see that sort of Monday morning quarterbacking, (an American term referring to making assertions/criticisms of an event or of someone's actions that either weren't being made before it, or criticisms that one simply couldn't have foreseen prior to the event/actions having occured. The reason alot of people were giving Gane real chance was the fact that, while being an elite striker first and foremost, he had also a number of descent sub wins as well and had demonstrated decent td-defense. IMO the conclusion people shoulda taken from the fight wasn't necessarily that Gane was/is a fraud, but that Jones' grappling is simply on a whole other level entirely. Gane, for the reasons i just said, has demonstrated to be a much more competent and effective grappler than what we've seen from Poatan thus far, while also being even bigger and stronger than Alex to boot - and yet Jones made it look easy. Personally I do believe Jones made it look so easy was partly due to Gane letting the moment get to him and panicked, (similar to Alex did when Izzy had him on the ground), but regardless either way Jones managed to do that against a bigger, stronger, more skilled, and above all - more experienced grappler. Which is why I just don't see Alex having much success against Jones. I also agree that think Tom would be a much more favorable match-up for Alex stylistically, however - still not all that much of one. With Jones I'm like 80-85% sure Alex would lose, while against Tom I'm still at least 65-70% sure he'd lose. Alex should stay at LHW, and if he does wanna get his feet wet at HW eventually - he should try his luck against Gane first. Similar to how when Anderson Silva wanted to try his hand at LHW he faced the decent striker James Irvin, (who de demolished btw), and didn't immediately go after Quinton Jackson, (who if i remember correctly was the LHW champ at the time - if it wasn't him it was either Griffon, Machida, or Rashad). Now that would imo be not only a much more favorable fight stylistically for Poartan, it also would simply be an effin awesome fight to see - period. Anyways - I've ranted enough, lol - great vid
