I am the same age as Pete, and grew up in Newcastle with Venom and Tygers of Pang Tang. This Motley Crue album was an absolute revelation in the UK with rock fans. It is a type of music that we'd never seen/ heard before. A brilliant album from start to finish. It was the excitement and exoticness of the USA. America was not somewhere you could just go to whenever you wanted. It was remote and cool. It is easy to mock in late middle age, but this was a visionary album at the time that we all bought into. The fact that it is so basic was great for us legions of would be musicians who wanted to play at The Mayfair and The City Hall. Mick Mars' guitar playing was so basic that you had a decent chance of being able to play along with it. The thin production and the sound has a real punk sensibility that had overtaken UK rock at the time. Why on earth would you mock the idea of doing a Motley Crue ranking when you did a Venom ranking? Shout at the Devil is in the top 10 metal/ rock albums of the 80s.

Absolute perfect 10/10 Traditional Heavy Metal album! Love every song. Although I could do without In the Beginning. They should have added "Black Widow", "Sinners & Saints" and "I Will Survive" to the album as they are all amazing songs that were recorded during these sessions. Early Crüe is the best Crüe!

I can't believe that you put Helter Skelter last. The pre chorus was Heavy ASF. 11. Knock Em Dead Kid 10. Looks That Kill 9. Too Young To Fall in Love 8. God Bless the Children of the Beast 7. Bastard 6. In the Beginning 5. Red Hot 4. Shout At the Devil 3. Helter Skelter 2. Ten Seconds to Love 1. DANGER ( THERE ARE NO SONGS EVEN REMOTELY LIKE IT IN THE MOTLEY CRUE CATALOGUE OF SONGS, It's similar to Quiet Riot - LOVE'S A BITCH, WASP - Sleeping in the Fire , and RUSH - No One's At the Bridge, a dark ballad with screaming Vocals)

@@godetonter4764 I couldn’t believe they all thought Danger was a crap song. It’s excellent. Great creative drumming, killer solo and Vince actually sounds emotive. It’s in my top 3 songs on this album easy.

@@SteveHughesOfficial what was really bizarre was the fact that they claimed it sounded typical of what Motley Crue would sound like on later albums. There's absolutely nothing Motley Crue did prior or in the future that sounded anything like Danger. It made me wonder if those guys were just basing their opinion on memory , and just didn't care to listen to the entire album for the song ranking. Through the years I have played Danger for friends who own Shout At the Devil and they would always ask me what I was listening to. People have told me that they basically only listen to Looks That Kill and Too Young To Fall in Love from the album

@@Starman2112ofKings Not especially no, but that's one of the huge differences between the US and the UK. Metal and hard rock got basically no mainstream coverage here whatsoever. We didn't/don't have an equivalent of the FM radio station you guys had that played rock and metal. We had one two hour weekly show on Radio 1 when I was growing up - Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show from 10pm until midnight, and that was it. The only bands that seemed to make that breakthrough in the 80s were Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Bon Jovi, with a little bit of Iron Maiden and AC/DC. Beyond that you'd maybe hear a song from a band like the Crue once, or maybe twice and then never again. If anything, it's even worse than that here now, other than niche stations like Planet Rock.

I lean closest to Pete regarding MC, except there’s no hate whatsoever - I’ve just never cared a fig about them. With that said, I still had so much fun watching this show (as I always do.) The dialogue during the segment for Steven’s beverage of choice was absolutely hilarious. Also noteworthy was Pete’s considerable restraint; the customary Vince Neil roasts were conspicuously absent, though his expressions were quite telling when Steven proceeded to wax lyrical about Neil (and the band, in general) at various points from the 53rd minute on, lol. “They are some quite nice looking girls, Steven. What were you doing?” 😂😂😂 Simon with the quick response, as usual. Thank goodness I had finished my cup of coffee before that part! Great show, guys.

Another gem from the UK Connection. It has been over 10 years since I've listened to this. I found that alot of the songs were too long even the short ones as the song structure seems to be verse - chorus - verse - chorus - guitar solo - chorus until they decide to fade. My ranking is :- In the beginning, 10 seconds to love, Helter-skelter, Danger, Red Hot (although I prefer the original by Motorhead, "Overkill"),God Bless etc, Knock 'em Dead Kid, Bastard, Looks that Kill, Shout at the Devil, Too Young to Fall in Love . A friend of mine who has never really heard the crue, after I played him a few tracks of this album, said he would rather listen to Bon Jovi. I played Shout, Too Young, some of Helter-skelter and Red Hot which he didn't mind.

Motley Crüe was my gateway into the world of hard rock and heavy metal, and Shout at the Devil was my first introduction to the band. With their big hair, heavy riffs, and bad-boy party lifestyle, they definitely made an impression on me. And although I will admit that they are not the most talented group of musicians, they haven’t always put out consistently good music, and they have relied a little too heavily on their image at times (a bit like the KISS perhaps), they have still managed to sell millions of albums, write some pretty memorable hit songs, and sell out concert venues all over the world. The name “Motley Crüe” is practically synonymous with the term “hair metal”so I definitely think they deserve to be part of the conversation. Good on you, mates!

I outgrew Motley Crue a little bit, but this album still holds up. I overplayed it a lot when I didn't know as much 80's hard rock. I grew up in a time that liked to pretend that glam never happened, and funny story about that- I remember it was around the time of their reunion in the early 2000's that Motley Crue was getting some radio play from a local station in Florida. Now, this radio station was playing stuff like Korn or Linkin Park. Young kids started calling the station and Motley Crue went on to become one of the most requested bands. It just goes to show that grunge didn't kill shit, 80's music was just swept off the radar for a good 12-15 years before the boom of social media and youtube (both of which made sharing music easier). This is important because it shows that the decision to make these bands "uncool" could have been more of a corporate effort than an actual cultural shift. Kids don't hate on music they haven't got a chance to hear, they're just drawn to music they're exposed to. Given the right support from the media, 80's music could have existed parallel to the 90's. Technology allowed the 80's to make a solid comeback...

I have to say something about this show. There seems to be a lot of critiquing the professionalism of this album. Which from someone who like Pete stopped listening to the Crüe after SATD and had been into them since TFFLove. Which is a glorified demo released as an album. Self financed and originally released on Leather records. Their own label. But it got them a deal. The Crüe were a proper underground band. Which is what also makes SATD cool as fuck as it sold 4 million copies and it’s an underground album in its sense of professionalism. There is a punk/ sleaze realness to the Crüe. They come from the hair metal scene, but their more punk and they looked a thousand times better than their glam counterparts. I think the satanic imagery here is also just a carry over from TFFL. The Live wire clip has Nikki wearing inverted crosses and spitting blood. The inner sleeve had them in front of pentagrams. The shift from this image to the TOPain image was the real change and sent me packing. Also being 16 when this came out. It was out of this world and you cannot tell me that gatefold photo didn’t inspire the black metal look. I know it did. I was there. I loved the intro to the album. God bless the children of the beast I never saw as silly and still don’t. I think it was like a short prayer that i related to entirely as a teenager in the 80s. We were the children of the nuclear age. The 70s were dead. It’s true the guitar sound sucks all MC besides Dr Feelgood has shit guitar sounds IMO. And I’m sorry for the rant. But their seems to be an embarrassment among the panel about liking this album which I don’t think is warranted. After all it’s a classic album released at the perfect time. No it’s not a perfect record. but it’s made by a bunch of dysfunctional punk/ rock n roll 20 year old maniacs. Which is exactly what I was. And as much as the Crüe can be ridiculous these days they have outlasted all their contemporaries. Also Danger is an amazing song and in my top three along with To young to fall in love and Knock em dead kid…..Cheers gentlemen and God bless the children of the beast. 🤟😎

Great post Steve! Interesting stuff. The only part I'd disagree with is that there was embarrassment from us about liking the album. I'm not embarrassed to say what I like and what I don't. I don't expect every or anyone to agree but I'm firm in my own thoughts of what I think is 'good' and prepared to be criticised for it LOL. I hadn't listened to Shout, or the Crue in years but still own everything up to the self titled album and used to have the two after that as well. I was genuinely surprised by how unimpressed I was going back to it today. The show wasn't meant to upset Crue fans (it has for one or two) but we all only said what we think - and it's worth mentioning that until we press record we make a point of NOT comparing notes, so, while we knew Peter wasn't going to love the album, Simon didn't know my thoughts and vice versa. There was no agenda, or indeed embarrassment, beyond that. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers!

@@TranquilityFireReid no worries Mr Reid. I always watch the UK connection. One of my favourites from the SOT panels. I love watching Mr Pardo crack up laughing at Simons smarmy northern wit. I now had Kill em all and Show no mercy that is where my real allegiances to metal went…thrash, death, black so like Pete I just saw the TOP album cover and didn’t even have a listen. But the beginning of the 80s being in a small town 100 miles outside Sydney. Everything was underground and out of this world for us. It was a great time for metal before all the money and stuff turned up…. I’m actually in Scotland as we speak. In Aberdeen doing a 5 day underground comedy tour. Away from the communist woke brigade. Great video gents! Gets a like for the 3,2,1 reference, I love the fact Simon and Steven couldn't give two fucks if people around the world get their niche UK references! Tom Werman has a really cool set of albums produced, just to put that out there. Listening to this again makes me realize it has the same sort of riffy, addictive mix. I had just recently revisited Twisted Sister and Cheap Trick. Best Poison album also has a similar feel.

Qudos to Mr Bray for fulfilling the commitment to UK beer nostalgia, not to mention UK gameshows (what Pete makes of all this I can only imagine). This was an interesting show for me in as much as it reflects on a time when, as a young gullible metal/rock fan, the media machine was able to accelerate careers way above the actual talent of the band. Style was so much more important than material. With the sad thing being that many more talented bands/artists went left largely ignored. Or to put more succinctly..... Motley Crue were a bit rubbish really, but they should care what I think while they rake in the cash right now.

This would have been a fantastic 12" ep with my top 4 tracks only - 1. Bastard - because technically I am one and it rocks hard 2. Too young to fall in love - This and the next are great heavy pop rock 3. Looks that Kill - see above , great choruses . 4. Shout at the Devil - Should have been heavier on record but was a fist in the air crowdfavourite 5. Red Hot - almost as rocking as Bastard, and great live but starting the reduce the quality 6. Knock em dead, kid - ho hum 7. God bless the children of the beast - someone's been listening to Schenker, totally out of place 8. Ten seconds to love - my band used to play this, nuff said, simple dumb basic glob 9. Danger - ho hum hum ho - out of place on this 10. Helter Skelter - aaaagh no, just no 11. In the Beginning - why? My version had a free 12 inch picture disc with it that had Looks that Kill/Helter Skelter/Piece of your action and Live Wire - so 3 out of 4 wasnt too bad. I caught them live at the Dominion Thetare, London with Cheap Trick as Support in November 1984 and they were a great live act. However Theater of Pain was a total let down and Girls Girls Girls was ok, but that was it for me.

Never heard the album, enjoyed the show, don't think I'll investigate it tho. Didn't listen live as the excellentTaylor Hawkins tribute show was on. The only MC album I have is Dr Feelgood which I enjoyed when it came out, don't think I've listened to it in 30 years. Didn't know a comp "Music to Crash Cars By" that is truly sick. A friend of mine grew up with Nick Dingley (Razzle) on the Isle of Wight. He's told many tales but one that comes to mind is that their school got a day off and bussed in to go litter picking after one of the IoW festivals.

On the topic of the production and Mars’ tone and sound, I’d be very curious as to what the guys would think of their last album, Saints of Los Angeles. New Tattoo is the one you couldn’t remember with the dragon on it. SOLA came out in the mid-2000s. I’ve considered it for awhile to actually be a far heavier album than anything else. Obviously Vince’s vocals aren’t great, but the instrumentation sounds great and heavy

I heard it when it came out Alexander. I can't say it grabbed me but yes, in terms of sound it was certainly up there with the best sounding things they did. As I said in the show, if everything sounded like Primal Scream I'd love this band.

@@TranquilityFireReid thanks for the reply! I definitely agree with you on Primal Scream. I think musically, it’s far and away the best Mick, Tommy, Vince, and Nikki ever did together. Tommy’s drumming is great (I’d say this is probably his LOUDEST sound too. They sound more powerful here than on any song he’s ever done, in my opinion), the main chorus riff is far and away the heaviest riff Mars has ever done with Vince and it’s fantastic at that, Vince actually sounds quite good and badass, and Nikki Sixx actually has an audible bassline (while it is simple, in most songs you don’t really even hear him at all) and I think it really drives the intro. Definitely the best musicianship/songwriting the four ever did

I really enjoy the first album for its rawness. The following 3 albums have few tracks that I really like, the rest is filler, plus as Steven said Werman's production didn't help much on those. Now here comes Bob Rock and boy do things really improve. Dr Feelgood has my favorite MC tracks and the ST kicks ass from start to finish with the heaviest production to date for them. Steven mentioned that how some of Neil's vox could have ended up on the record, well, autotune didn't exist back then *cough* Ozzy *cough*.
