Another interesting video, thank you. I actually never appreciated that Marylebone wasn’t a Network Rail station. As to the hybrid train. It’s an interesting development and would in my view be worthwhile to continue . Clearly electrification is the best way but hybrid would be an excellent alternative on lines such as Chiltern and on rural lines around the country where electrification wouldn’t be immediately viable.

personally battery trains are good but I think they should also invest in electrification of the Chiltern mainline mainly because its the last route into London without electrification also most of Chiltern's trains have electric variants. but this is a step in the right direction so good on them

I think you will find that the Class 68/mark 3/DVT sets are only used on the Marylebone to Birmingham route and not to Oxford. They are very luxurious especially in standard class and worth a review.

They are used on the Oxford Route, but only on the 1818 in the evening

My experience with the doors connecting the cars, is that no force is required to open it, as there’s a pressure button in the floor in the slightly slopping area of the floor which takes a second to operate.

it's weird because most 170s (and being a 168/3, this *was* a 170) have a sensor in the second door that I find you have to wave at for it to work (and it's really not obvious if you don't know) but nonetheless they do.

Yep! Not sure if the 777s have them, especially seeing the outer bogies are supposed to be inside framed, just like the 717s (which also have tripcocks, until the Northern City goes ETCS) and 710s (which actually don't have them, despite the caption! they have an exception in the Sectional Appendix and TPWS was fitted on the shared sections where it wasn't there before. 378s might not keep theirs too, for that reason.) Notable mention for the 313s, which used to have them - maybe the Network Rail ETCS unit still does? Another "interesting" point is that the later converted 168s must have been fitted with a runback prevention system - from what I've read, LU requires it after one runaway happened, and while the other 165s and 168s had that taken care of by ATP, these units don't have ATP fitted (and soon it'll be removed from the others due to obsolescence).

3:13 that photo is of former 170303 which became 168323, whereas this unit being 168329 is former 170309.

It would be nice if Chiltern upgraded their whole fleet to diesel/ electric hybrid (rather than just one train). What are the timescales of this transition…?

Does anyone know if the 168s are gonna stay in the Chiltern fleet for years to come or do they have a replacement lined up?

No replacement considered at present

The only replacement will be if the recent tender for Battery units comes to fruition. The loco hauled sets will be short lived though.

think i'm right in saying that the tables are the same as the ones being introduced on the new avanti pendolino's. btw are you thinking of doing a review of the new pendolino's?

Anyone know if this is *parallel* hybrid or *series* hybrid? The DMU's traction is transmitted via automatic (or automated) gearbox. So I'm guessing parallel hybrid, like a Prius. Or am I barking up the wrong tree? It says Rolls Royce on the side, so I am also thinking, gas turbine generator and series hybrid.

@@RWL2012 That in itself is confusing as there's a German Rolls Royce (MTU powertrains?) and a British one (Gas turbines and jet engines) and then there's the car company, owned by BMW lol.

Erm im not quite sure about the change of ownership ofnthe franchise but i can say many of the branchlines exluding aylesbury were part of a different franchise i do belive

This is the same franchise - Chiltern was originally owned by M40 Trains, which retained the original 1996 franchise in the early 2000s for 20 years. It was then sold to John Laing, then to Henderson Equity Partners. Following this, DB Regio purchased Laing Rail which subsequently became part of Arriva in 2011 after it was purchased by DB, with Chiltern winning a direct award to keep the same franchise going for another 6 years beyond 2021. However, the franchise is still the same as it was under M40 Trains.

@@OMtheRails oh yh forgot abt that 🤦🏾‍♂️ Tho since arriva according to them its uks first major rail upgrade not funded by the state.... Chiltern Railway is probably the best commuter rail service in the UK

@@Transport-Coolfunr Actually Chiltern is a model of how the privatised rail network should be run. The way they have invested in improving services and putting money into line upgrades is wonderful.
