This is the start of a decent kit, but it needs a way to carry it like a fanny pack or a pouch. Would also benefit from a fixed blade, folding saw, and/or a hatchet.

I spend way too much time on KZfaq watching videos like this one. Most are just copies of other videos and their included ideas. Gotta look a lot to find somethin' new. I found it here, I'm happy to say! This is a pretty damn good kit you've put together and you showed the contents without a whole lot of extraneous comments and other assorted crap. Saw several things that I haven't seen on other videos and that's getting harder to do, the more of these that I watch. Good job and a definite thumbs up from me!

Overall, a great kit. You've got the basics covered. There's a lot I like, but here are some thoughts I had while watching... That's a big box, too big for the average cargo pocket. In my opinion, the idea of a "survival kit" is to always have it on your person, so if you're separated from your main kit, you have the basics at least. I would figure out a way to either get it comfortably in a pocket, or hang it on your belt. You've got a lot of room in that box...you should have a solid fixed blade knife in there. And choose either the Skeletool or the SAK; carrying both seems redundant to me. I carry a 6" CKRT minimalist fixed blade and a Victorinox Farmer-X (awl, saw, scissors). Your med kit needs a few more basic meds, like pain relief - ibuprofen or acetaminophen - and an anti-diarrheal like loperamide. If your doctor will cooperate, he/she can prescribe a good antibiotic to carry when you embark on a trip. It can be a life saver. Naturally, training in backcountry first aid is imperative. I carry my lighters in a hard case (Exotac) to prevent fuel loss. They currently only make a case for the full size Bics, though. I'd like to point out that the lock pick set does NOT contain a "saw"...that is a style of lock pick called a "rake". Watch some KZfaq videos, and get some random lock cylinders and get some practice. Then try not to get arrested or shot for opening shit you shouldn't be opening. And that handcuff key will do you zero good if it's in your kit. Duct tape it to the inside of your belt, or sew it into your clothing. F-r-e-s-n-e-l is pronounced "fray-NEL". It's French. Augustin-Jean Fresnel was a French physicist that invented the lens type in the early 19th century, for use in lighthouses. I have one made of acrylic that is my #1 go-to for fire starting, in adequate sunlight. While the Potable Aqua tabs are a decent purification option, remember that they take 4 hours to work. Also, I would be very leery of hanging any plastic bag over embers, regardless of what the manufacturer says. I use WhirlPak bags for storage, and a combination of Aquamira tablets (30 mins, kills bacteria and viruses) and a Frontier filter straw (eliminates cysts) for purification. I carry a beefy 6" X 3/8" ferro rod. Why fuck around? If I can't get a flame with the Fresnel, I get one 99% of the time with the ferro. The lighter, matches and man-made tinder I carry are for when natural tinder is scarce or too wet. The Coghlan mirror would not be my choice. The item you displayed is a camp mirror, not a signal mirror. Could it be used? Sure, but there are better choices. I keep a StarFlash mini in all my kits. The aiming hole is crucial for hitting your target accurately. So there you have it...just some random ideas. If even one thing I say makes any sense to you or anyone else, I'm glad. Good luck to you, Sir! Keep on the sunny side of the street, and keep on keepin' on...

@G. Victor Paulson I agree with everything you said, even said similar about the handcuff key, but I will defend the inclusion of a lockpick just for things like breaking into a uninhabited cabin, shed, or utility building to get out of the cold without compromising a door frame or window. I'd also like to add to your points that all the signaling and navigation devices, including rhe trail marking tape should be kept up top and at the ready. Better to be able to quickly and efficiently access those items and signal for rescue or navigate and self rescue than rely on the items of this kit to survive. Search and rescue efforts are most extensive during the 72 hours after a missing report is first filed. At the size of this kit I also don't see any reason not to use a full sized Bic lighter either. I'll also say that given the size of this kit, it would be better as a vehicle's survival kit, because of its bulk it wouldn't be very comfortable wearing on a belt for even a day hike. Redunancy is actually a decent thing as the old motto is something like "one is none and two is one". Great point about the aquatabs and length of time it takes to pyrify water. This mess tin is large enough to fit a small lifestraw. Given the choice of items in this kit, it seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis and tries to be a wilderness survival kit as well as an escape and evasion kit. There seems to be little to nothing in the way of food procurement, which isn't too bad, but things like snare wire, a bow string, or even surgical tubing to make a sling shot aren't too bulky, and will give an edge as well as add to cordage in a pinch. Fishing line too. Even fishing hooks can be repurposed for diffent uses. Seen someone straigten one out to use as a sewing needle on an episode of Alone, and I've actually used them as makeshift safety pins. Although the human body can withstand weeks without food, even a few days of hunger can cloud judgement. There's also not a very good saw. Even those silly wire saws can be made more effective by making them into a bow saw, and even a real bow saw blade can be bent to fit into this tin and flattened straight again. Saw one person actually include a 24" bow saw blade in an Altoids tin!. Speaking of Altoids tins, one of the tins could have been fit into this kit to both organize all the fire starting material, keep the bic lighter from being depressed and losing fuel, and aid in processing char cloth. I think one thing that most people overlook is not just what's in a kit, but how it's organized. Signalling/navigation and first aid should be the most readily accessible, followed by water and shelter items, then fire and food items. With a little overlap here and there. On a personal note, and bear with me, I'm going to gripe about the whole *gimmick* of Escape & Evasion kits since more times than not, the vast majority of people will never be placed into a scenario where they need to escape a d/or evade Really the only ones who need to worry about this are military, mercenaries, and people in shady business. Even the chances of being cuffed by someone other than law enforcement are pretty slim outside of these professions.

What I do is use heavy duty tin foil pressed inside the tin to form a ‘second skin’ so when you need to use the mess tin the contents can be lifted out whole and undisturbed and safe from loss,then simply placed back in afterwards.Secondary use - with care it’s possible to form the shape so it holds water as a sort of ‘cup’.

I suggest a length of plastic tube to act as a straw. Moving and pouring boiled and cooled water may disturb any sediment that collects. Use a straw to drink straight from the metal container without disturbing the crud in the bottom of the tin. If it’s a 7 day kit you need at least 20 water purifying tabs. A length of strong brass wire is good for binding/lashings and repairing boots, straps, etc. Not sure about a leather man and a folding knife. Birthday candles are compact, light and burn for about 10-15 mins each. Maybe ditch one Mylar blanket for one of those disposable rain ponchos. Keeping dry is a top priority. You can die from exposure in a few hours

Awesome kit! Well done! You provided some really good ideas for my survival kits. I do like the container…very nice! Appears the latches provide a tight water resistant seal. Personally, I would make few changes to the kit, but one thing I would remove is the lock pick kit…not much room for that out in the boonies, right! In an urban Setting, yes, but out in the woods, don’t think so. Also, i would switch out those Mylar blankets for SOL Heatsheets. Much more durable and quiet too. Your FAK is good…maybe add some alcohol and providing-iodine prep pads and some more pain allergy and diarrhea meds. Love Wazoo and Survival Resources for survival gear. Just a few things off the top of my head to think about. No criticism meant about your choices Bro. Good all around kit! Looking forward to future vids! I did sub too! Thanks!

Hello young man, please do not take this as a slam against your video. I say the same thing to every emergency video I watch, and there are a buttload of them. You say the kit is a seven day kit. How do you determine that? Select a safe place of your choosing, away from any and all humane contact and have a friend drop you off with that kit for seven days. When you get back, make another video with that same kit and give a report on how well it worked out for you. I spent 34 years in the Marine Corps. I know a little about survival. I am not saying the kit is a FUBAR. I am not saying you are not capable of surviving in a survival situation. What I am saying is that you could be one of the first youtubers to prove what you are proposing. If not for any reason except to yourself. If you did that you would be one of the most rare videos on youtube, and I would think you would have one of the best watched videos on youtube if your tagline was "I actually used my emergency kit for seven days and lived to talk about it" My second thought is if that is a lunchbox, would be a pissed off puppy if that was all I would be able to use for my lunch, lol. Take care and I wish you well.
@Eidolon1andOnly
@Eidolon1andOnly 2 жыл бұрын
That is one thing I have always disliked about so called wilderness survival kits videos which give a time frame. To this young man's credit I will say I believe that since the inventory of the kit included enough water purification tabs, caffeine pills, and salt sticks to last 7 days, was the reason behind calling it a 7 day kit. To me a wilderness survival kit shouldn't have an "expiration date" but allow you to be able to survive long term if beed be, and if not give you all the tools you need, at least give you enough to make or procure the things you need for long term survival if necessary. I get the reasoning behind calling it a "7 day survival kit" but I disagree with it. As someone who has lived and tough wilderness survival, trained by veterans such as yourself, I fully understand and get where you're coming from. I'd also like to thank you for your service and wish you and yours the best.

Great, but have you tried to open some of those tiny press closure bags with frozen and wet fingers? Impossible. Ditch some of the bags and save a bit of space. Maybe add a couple of boiled sugar sweets to make an emergency fruit energy drink, or a couple of sachets of powdered rehydration salts drinks? Some excellent bits in the kit though.

This does not contain all 10 C's. You're missing a Cover element and a Canvas sail needle. I'd take out some of that stuff and throw in a space blanket and disposable rain poncho. Combine those two things with some leaves, grass, or other bough material to lay on and you have a complete shelter. Shelter, water, fire are more important than anything else.

Wonderful kit. I would just carry the charger cord in your pocket, you don't want to have to go through survival gear every time you need a charge, and if you find an outlet to charge then you are likely not in a situation that needs the other gear to survive. The escape gear likewise is a feel good option but useless inside the kit. Escape gear needs to already be hidden on you, you will have no time to dig though the kit if set upon by kidnappers. Don't store escape gear in a phone case or wallet as both will be taken from the start.

Handcuff key is pointless. If soneone is able to get you in cuffs, they took away this kit. If for some reason they didn't take away your kit, you're not going to find that key with your hands cuffed behind your back. It's a well put together kit though. I would put all the signalling devices such as the whistle, trail marking tape, and mirror at the top. Best to have those easily accessible since the first 36-72 hours is when the most extensive search and rescue efforts will be taking place.

This is just something I put together with the gear I already had. I pinned the inventory list, and I'll be creating some Amazon public wish lists with for each kit soon.

Yes. Given the probability of decreased calorie consumption, you'd be surprised how this is completely adequate.

Do you by any chance have a link list?
@DontForgetYourLunch35
@DontForgetYourLunch35 2 жыл бұрын
Working on that today. KZfaq only allows a finite list of links in the description so I’ll probably leave out the smaller everyday items like bandages, hair bands, etc.

@@DontForgetYourLunch35 Awesome! I'll keep an eye out for it. I already have a decent selection of bandages and such. Your video is very insightful and I definitely appreciate the quality!!

Ok was only able to squeeze in the first 20 or so items under the description. Working on creating a DFUL amazon account where I can then create public wish lists and share the links in the future.
