Thanks Jack. I came across Cyclowax recently, and I'm very interested. I too, didn't want the hassle of storing the chemicals etc. This is a very simple, straightforward method for waxing a chain. Good job Cyclowax, and great video Jack.

great tutorial, love the looks of a clean chain, and the idea of reduced environmental impact. I think as cyclists, we have a much more connected understanding of nature and the importance of preservation of natural beauty, to a greater extent than those who only really see it through a car, bus, train window

Been thinking about moving to wax and you've pretty much convinced me. Went to go purchase the Cyclowax starter kit and the postage to Australia is uber expensive. Will need to explore other avenues I think.

Great to see this in use Jack. I'm believer in waxing my chain and the benefits can really be felt. I use Silca Super Secret after stripping new chains down with mineral spirits, which does a great job but dripping the wax on like a regular lube never instills in me the confidence that I imagine submerging and bathing the entire chain would. This seems like such a neat little gadget and would love to win the giveaway. All followed and subscribed! 🤞

Started waxing recently and can’t believe what a game changer it is. From an environmental point it is a huge benefit. Always it requires less maintenance and is super quiet. Not one reason to use lube ever again. A great product

I just want to save the world by reducing waste :) No, honestly I want to keep my bike clean and long lasting without spending a lot of money on replacements etc. Waxing a chain looks like the perfect solution to that and riding about 350km each week I go through a lot of chain-destruction and re-lubing. Love to see that you stand behind the products you use and help us all to improve on the equipment we use

I m waxing my chain for more than a year now and yes it is a gamechanger and worth it. I only wax my chain in a bath when I put on a new chain. Afterwards I use drip on wax from Ceramicspeed Ufo drip. Works perfectly 👌

I've been looking to get my grimy, lube-stained hands on a kit ever since you posted about it last December. Their website mentioned that a tablet lasts for around 8 wax treatments, but you mentioned that you've been using the same tablet for 5-6 months' worth of weekly treatments, so I guess that's fine if it's coming from you. Super convinced about the short- and long-term cost-effectivity and convenience of this system 👌

Also, would it make sense to wipe off any off-road dust that's stuck on the chain prior to re-waxing? Although I'm not sure if that's possible with a waxed chain to begin with

My one tablet has lasted me all this time which is pretty crazy. Sure I’m running granny gears which means I’m on a smaller chain, but still, 8 months is 8 months right?! You’ll love this setup mate 👊🏽👊🏽

Presumably if you've had a really messy ride, with all sorts of road mess covering the bike, you need to give the chain a good wash down before re-waxing as you'd only contaminate the wax in the pot if not. Is that right? What do you do? And if you wash the chain with water, do you need to do anything ahead of rewaxing?

Just today I cleaned my sons bike, the one from my wife and one of mine. I really hate all the grease and oily stuff in my drivetrain - waxing sounds like much better way and I would love to try it :)

100% agree after a wet ride to rewax the chain been using paraffin wax from candles during winter in the UK to try it out works great just bought some ptfe powder to add to the mix much better than wet lube / oil

That’s convinced me!! All the fiddling with degreasers etc is such a pain and I‘ve been considering wax for some time now. Do you run multiple chains in parallel to let the wax dry properly? Some people suggest this. Cheers and keep up the inspiring work!

You do need to replace them more often, but I don’t replace them every time. Every few for sure, better to be safe!

I’d love to experiment with waxed chains. The upfront time/cost is a little daunting, especially the pre-waxed route. I’m tired of my chain looking black from all of the road debris from this harsh NE winter🥶

Great video! However, I’m not waxing my chain for two reasons: 1. Noise, okay it’s silent for the first 1-2h, then i got a lot of noise (in comparison with oil Silca like lube) 2. Remove chain from the bike, ideally you need to install brand new quick link every single time (I believe sram recommends to use quick link only once, for flat top chains), so basically they are not reusable, which is annoying and additional expense.

Would you recommend for ultra endurance events or bikepacking trips where you are out away from home for multiple days and or the event lasts 1000km +?

Sure would! Just take a drip wax with you and apply it after each ride (after you’ve done the initial 500km.) make sure it’s wax though and not a normal lube!

Hi, looking at the service manual for shimano quick links. They recommend you not to reuse them once they have been opened. How often do you change them?

Approximately every 5 waxes mate. In my opinion, ‘one use’ is overkill 👌🏽

You don't move the chain in the wax bath. How and why should the wax go into the rolls? And then hang the chain directly from the hot wax (95 degrees). The wax will run out against you. I let the wax cool down to ~55 degrees and then take the chain out...

also, if you don't want to have to rewax every week, you can cycle through 2 chains at a time and wax them together, that way you won't have to do it as frequently

Very important to clean chain rings and cassette from dirt and lube residue otherwise the waxed chain will get contaminated and wax won't be as effective/clean

You are not showing the chain cleaning process. I assume that would need to occur prior to using it if you are not using a new chain?

There isn’t one mate, to use a wax system properly (I should have clarified this in the video) you need to start with a pre-waxed chain from the professionals - in this case Cyclowax. Using an old chain, you risk having too much residual grease and the wax will not bond properly. Good pick up!

The Cyclowax chains are from sram, Shimano and a few other manufacturers but they’ve had the PROPER degrease. I would highly recommend buying their pre-waxed chain and not trying to clean your own chain at home

If you start with a pre waxed chain, you don’t need to wash the chain ever again! Just re-wax it and you’re good to go again 👊🏽👊🏽

How do you wax the chain when you don't have this machine around? e.g. if you go on a multi-day bikepacking tour with more than 500 km.

You can use a drip wax for a bikepacking circumstance like the one you mentioned. Make sure it’s only wax though, no more lube🙅🏻‍♂️

Did you try to use UFO drip or Silca super secret occasionally and see how that behaves once it’s thrown into the „real“ wax?

I’ve tried using squirt in between waxes where I don’t have access to the Cyclowax kit and there appears to be no problem, provided you use a wax based drip lube. Awesome to know for travel and circumstances where it’s not possible to take the kit, or a spare chain 👌🏽👌🏽

Good question mate, I’d say 500km/week on avg the last 6 months so 10-12k km. Each wax last me about 7 days 🔥🔥

I'm tyred of cleaning my drivetrain every 3/4 rides. My fancy pants lube doesn't last the claimed km, and the chain will start screaming at me if I don't re-apply! Not even speaking on the latex gloves, as it's another expense if I want to keep my hands clean...
