I decided to add to the title and the description Dell XPS 9510 which is the latest 2021 model. Both Dell XPS 15 9500 and 9510 are absolutely identical externally and internally, the only difference is that they have different CPU and GPU chips. Also Dell 9510 uses second M.2 slot instead of the first one. So if you want to install the second drive then you need to buy a heat sink for the first M.2 solt. The links for the heat sinks in the description to the video.
@WrongNumbr
@WrongNumbr 2 жыл бұрын
You mention the fact that the 9510 comes with the M.2 in the other slot from your video, is there a specific reason and/or does it matter which one the boot drive is in? Does one slot run at gen 4 speeds in the 9510 and the other in Gen 3? Are they both Gen 3? Are they both Gen 4 (questions Specific to the 9510). I bought both slots heat sinks prior to my machines arrival so I am prepared for either, I just have to decide on the M.2 I'm buying for the second slot. Too bad Samsung has no 980 Pro in 4TB variety.
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 2 жыл бұрын
@@WrongNumbr Both M.2 slots on XPS 9510 run at Gen4 (PCIe 4.0) speeds. There's no difference at all which one you will use. You can install two 980PRO 2TB SSDs if you need 4TB storage. Also if you want to buy Samsung's SSD (which I highly recommend) then watch this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f56KY5yfupuZZIU.html

Amazing video! So well shot and edited. To-the-point and quick! I had one question though, is it necessary to use a heatsink for the SSD or can I just apply the thermal pad and call it a day (as TheEverydayDad did in his video of the Dell XPS 15 9500 upgrade)? Thanks!
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 7 ай бұрын
Yes, it's absolutely necessary to use a heatsink because that's what dissipates the heat. The thermal pad only transfers the heat from the uneven surface of the drive to the heatsink, and the thermal pad should be firmly pressed between two surfaces for maximum performance. The thermal pad itself won't cool down your drive; it will fall off once you flip your laptop.

Samsung 980PRO with heat sink is made for desktops or for some consoles like PS5. There's no way you can fit it in that Dell laptop. Just buy a regular SSD. And I'd suggest watching a video on how to properly apply thermal pads on a new SSD. I have a video on that too.

Very good video. Thanks! Question: Can the XPS 9510 100% use two different M.2 2280 drives? A Dell rep just told me it can only use one 2280 and one 2230. Seems like utter nonsense to me! From my understanding the slots are interchangeable for use of either 2230 (256GB max) or 2280 drives (4TB max). Please can you help confirm? Dell proved very unhelpful and didn't want to know about a spare 2nd slot heatsink (left side when upside down, opposite end to battery connection). Just kept telling me I needed a 2230 heatsink. Hope you can help answer the ssd question. Thank you
@chemicallymark
@chemicallymark 2 жыл бұрын
OK so its official. Dell are full of idiots! I tried a 2nd 2280 SSD in the second slot and it was no issue at all. You can install 2x 2280 M.2 drives if each is less than 4TB. What I don't have is a 2nd slot heatsink. Now I need to complain to Dell that they're wrong and I need a bracket. I can't find one in Europe and US and CN sources suggest they will point fit the xps 9500. Hope this helps someone else out.

You can use two 2280 without any problems. If your laptop came with 2230 SSD (it comes with an adapter that allows you to install 2230 into 2280 slot) then you can also use one 2230 SSD if you want. The links for the heat sinks in the description below the video.

Great video(s)! Thank you for taking the time. I am about to buy an XPS 15 9510. I am going to get it with 500GB drive intending to upgrade to 2 TB using the 980 Pro you recommend. I plan to load Windows 11 onto the 2TB drive (downloading the windows 11 media creation tool from the MS website). My question... The drive from Dell will come preinstalled with Windows 11, but also all the "bundled" software they add - most of which I don't think I need. They provide a 12-month license to McAfee, but I will figure that out. If I just load Windows 11, I assume none of that other "junk" (bloatware?) will be loaded. Is there any of it that I need, or should keep? Second Question: The computer comes with 16GB of RAM. Upgrading to 64GB is expensive. I plan to use 16GB for a while and see how it does, but interested in your opinion on how much RAM to get and performance implications (photo editing applications). Thanks!

Dell XPS 9500 is a pretty good laptop and I don't see any serious or minor issues in schematics and overall design of that model. They use pretty good components and repairability compared to Apple laptops is like day and night difference. That laptop is definitely not for gaming, even though it's powerful enough to ply almost any games. The cooling system simply is not capable of dissipating so much heat from the CPU and GPU chips. Other than that it's a perfect tool for any work like design, photo/video editing, coding/ virtualization etc.

I talked to Dell support for a while. They told me that DDR4, 3200MHz, unbuffered, non-ECC, 1.2V memory should work. I've tried two different sets of SODIMM modules and both fail with the 2/5 POST code. The only memory that works is the memory that the Dell came with. The Dell CSR told me "if you're under warranty then the system will know and will enforce that you only use genuine DELL parts but if you're not under warranty it should work". That can't possibly be true as there is no way that a hardware POST will know my warranty status. He also couldn't sell me a memory upgrade (no stock). So I can't upgrade my RAM either through Dell or through 3rd party parts. This is very frustrating.

Thanks for recording such a detailed tutorial on upgrading the RAM and SSD for Dell XPS 9500. I run into one problem, could anyone from the channel, or someone who watches the video help me? Yesterday, before I started upgrading the RAM and SSD, I read on numerous websites that it would be recommended to disconnect the battery cable before replacing the RAM and SSD. I also asked ChatGPT and Google Gemini and they both confirmed that it would be recommended to unplug the battery cable to avoid accidental damage to the RAM or SSD, so I decided to unplug the battery cable before upgrading the RAM and SSD. When I tried to disconnect the cable, it seemed a little bit stuck. Then I used this technique to remove the battery cable - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e52hrdpyq8fGg2Q.htmlsi=OB2mPJwvw2g9Px2F&t=466 - where you disconnect the speakers and lift the battery a little bit, that gives one enough room to disconnect the battery cable more easily, and this technique allowed me to disconnect the battery cable. After replacing the RAM and SSD, I was not able to connect the battery cable to the socket. After it goes halfway through it, it seems to get stuck and no longer moves, no matter how much force I apply. Unfortunately, I have watched dozens of videos on YouTue and other Dell XPS laptops do not seem to have this problem. For them the battery cable can easily be disconnected and connected again to the socket. I tried to connect the cable to the socket while applying the same force on the left and right side and try to connect it in a straight direction, but it just gets stuck halfway through and forcing it to move does not seem to help. I also tried to apply a lot of force, but it just does not move. I used the laptop for work, and I did not expect this to happen. It's extremely important for me to find a solution to this problem soon. Can someone help me? I want to thank everyone in advance who takes time to read my comment and replies. Your help means the world to me ❤

You'll never damage replacing a RAM module or an SSD just because the battery is still plugged in. It's a good practice to disconnect it only just in case you do something wrong. Like I mentioned in the video, if you're unsure of your skills or don't know what you're doing, then disconnect the battery. This is crucial because if you drop a screw on the board or if your screwdriver slips, you can easily short circuit something. I work with this type of stuff daily, so for such upgrades, I usually never disconnect the battery. Another reason I avoid disconnecting it is because it will reset the BIOS to default settings, and I don't know what custom settings the customers may have applied. In your case, it appears some pins were bent in the connector, which is why you can't fully insert it. What you need to do now is fully remove the motherboard so you can see the inside of the connector, and then use very thin tweezers or something similar to carefully straighten the pins. However, under no circumstances should you use the connector while it's partially inserted. A huge current flows through those pins during charging, which can easily melt the faulty connector and damage the motherboard. If you need more help, I will be happy to assist you.

@@ElectronicsComputers I am extremely grateful for taking your time to write such a detailed response ❤ I can’t describe in words how much time you may have saved me and how helpful your reply to me is. I am glad to hear that RAM or SSD won’t get damaged during the upgrade if I don’t disconnect the battery cable. I have upgraded RAMs and SSDs in my old laptops without disconnecting the battery, but I was doing it for the first time for my Dell XPS. Since the Dell has a warning on the battery that says “Disconnect the battery before accessing any parts or devices”, I was worried about it. I also read two posts from other users that they have upgraded the SSDs and the laptop no longer was booting up and someone mentioned in the comments, that they may have accidentally short circuited the laptop. Because of this, I decided to disconnect the battery cable just to be on the safe side. I am confirming that I am confident in my skills and there’s minimal chance that I will accidentally slip the screwdriver or I may accidentally drop the screw on the motherboard. Luckily, I have a laptop screwdriver set. The screwdriver has a magnetic finish and the screw attaches to it once you remove them, so the chances of falling it off accidentally is almost minimal. I’ve never accidentally dropped the screw on the motherboard, or touched the screwdrivers on other parts of the laptop, so based your response, in the future, if I want to upgrade the RAM and SSD on my Dell XPS, I have to keep the cable connected and upgrade the RAM and SSD without worrying about damaging the laptop. Thanks for letting me know that the pins may got bent and that’s why the cable no longer connects to the socket. From what I saw from the naked eye, the pins seemed to be aligned correctly. I will disassemble the laptop in a few hours again and will take a closer look at the pins with a magnifying glass. I am happy to say that I have a small tweezer for the laptop, so hopefully, I will be able to correct the pins and connect the cable myself. Thank you so much for letting me know that I should never partially insert the cable to the socket and it needs to be fully connected, otherwise, it may melt when charging the battery. I want to thank you again for the detailed response. You absolutely made my day ❤

@@bekamarsagishvili7957 I'm happy to help, as always! If the pins are perfectly straight, then maybe something got inside the connector.
