Leigh Fuge of MusicTeacher.com walks us through the ultimate finger dexterity exercise to get your fingers mobile, moving independently and playing guitar lightning fast!
As a guitar player, finger dexterity is such an important skill to have. This is the art of being able to
use each finger on your fretting hand freely and independently without any stress or strain. At first,
it can be a tricky skill to develop. When you start playing guitar, or you’re still in the early stages of
playing guitar, it can feel like all your fingers want to move at the same time.
This exercise is a great dexterity builder that allows you to focus on every finger pairing in one
exercise. It also works for your strength building, legato skills, alternate picking skills and
coordination, but primarily its goal is to make your fingers feel more dextrous!

Great exercise! I have been playing for 20 years, and this is a great way to approach dexterity exercises. I have done many similar exercises over the years, so it didn’t take but a few seconds to catch up to these with the video. I do plan on working on this with a metronome to not only build speed, but to first build consistent timing. Please keep content like this coming. It isn’t just good for beginners, but something for those of us that have played for a couple of decades as well!

That's awesome to hear, thanks for checking the video out and I'm glad to hear you got some benefit from the exercise. I always think that dexterity being taught in the usual 1 2 3 4 method is fine, but we often neglect the relationships between other fingers which can also be very important. I've got a bunch more exercise videos for this channel in the works to stay tuned because there is plenty more like this on the way. If there are any techniques or specific things focused on with exercises let me know!

Excellent, great progress from the traditional spider exercises.

Thanks Jason, glad you enjoyed it. I love the regular Spider exercises to get started, but I think it's important for us to focus on other finger pairings too. The spider makes us use each finger in order, but doesn't focus on pairings of different fingers. Every exercise like this has a benefit, glad you liked this one!

Very similar to MAB‘s warm-ups. I’ve been doing those for about a year now. Feels so good on my aging 80s heavy metal fingers, ha ha. Another technique that could be thrown in is working on sweep picking. So, with the opening lick, instead of ‘picking’ each downstroke, one could smoothly glide through each string in a sweeping motion. Meaning, not visibly picking each string, but sweeping smoothly through. For example, after sweeping through the low E, rest the pick right up against the A string and sweep that As soon as your ring finger is about to fret the seven fret. And so on. So it’s not a jerky motion, but a very fluid movement. You can find a lot of great videos on this technique online. I wish I would’ve known that early on while working on sweeps. Watch MAB. He will keep your fingers healthy, and faster than you could ever imagine. 🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸 Of course if you’re working on your pick attack, which I do all the time also, then you would want to pick every note. I love using alternate picking for this opening exercise he shows here. I change it up. But for me, doing heavy (and light) picking, with palm and string muting, just feels so good. Great for working on your dynamics also. I think a tricky pattern is trying to pick one string hard, and the next one light, and so on. Or, pick the low strings heavy, and the high strings with a very light touch as quietly as you can. And vice versa. … or with a lot of upstrokes, which he probably covers here too. Anyway, sorry to jump in here, just thought I might be able to help someone. Now I’ll go back and finish watching this great video. These guys and gals are great here at PMT!!! 🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸

@@LeighFugeGuitar yep I practice everyday.....obviously the pinky finger feels a bit odd but watching many videos it seems I'm not the only one 🤣🤣 Was just interesting you say to start on the 5th fret which as a beginner is awesome advice which I have passed on too 👍👍 Thanks for your reply 👍

AND do not get in the habit of letting the first finger point out, and the pinky flailing while using other fingers… or flexing/curling up any finger not in use. That is a bad habit to start, and hard to change later. Plus, you gotta look cool, not awkward. So keep any finger not in use, closer to the fretboard, to develop that great efficient muscle memory. I think that is something most people do not think about. But again, I see it in this control in the greats, and explicitly learned it from MAB a year ago. Luckily I wasn’t flailing too badly at all, so it just took a little re-training. This is called, neuromuscular reprogramming. Just like athletes have to do when they’re reinforced a bad habit for too long. 🎸🤘🏻🇺🇸

… and be aware of when you are doing straight alternate picking, or mixing in some ‘economy’ picking as he is doing here. Economy picking is great, and another thing I don’t think a lot of players, for sure younger players, learn. Economy picking here would be where he is descending back to the low E string, and down picking a note on the E, and going directly to down picking the A string. Almost like a mini sweep. Down picking-and up picking-two successive strings. This is great for three note per string runs, scales, and modes. That is one of Yngwie’s ‘secrets.’ He glides right through the strings like butter… and so quickly and effortlessly!!!
